  1. 100%, because LSU is still the better team despite the outcome. Polls are not (and should not) be about who beats who week to week, but about who is the better team. Does anyone think Stanford is better than USC? Once, yes, but 98 times out of 100, USC wins.
  2. Pam > Angela > Jan > Karen >>>>>>>>>>>>> Kelly
  3. too bad neither will go undefeated
  4. that's hard to do because it's Devlin, i'm convinced. they put a lot of eye black on him and a false nose
  5. they must have inserted Pat Devlin but had him wear Morelli's jersey
  6. yeah, that one loss....
  7. I really hope that two of the names on the list are Cal Ripken, Jr. and Tony Gwynn. Not that I dislike those guys, but if those two were on the juice, then yeah, pretty much everyone was
  8. Pretty much. I'll wait and see who's on that list when it comes out but most of the players are one's we'd expect. and what's the point of naming names? i'm willing to bet that many of the names are guys who aren't even playing anymore, so why publicly nail them to a cross for past indiscretions? if anything, the Mitchell Commission should be investigating why Selig and Fehr so willingly turned a blind eye to what was obviously a rampant problem through the 90's. naming names pretty much removes culpability from those who had the power to fix the problem while putting too much blame on the players who, while doing something I disagree with, were basically taking advantage of the situation that was presented to them. i'd really hate to get into situation where we're erasing records and taking back championships and all that BS due to this. Clean up the future, don't dwell on the past
  9. i think this is dumb. baseball isn't going to clean up baseball by informing us of who cheated in the past. they need to install testing programs to catch cheaters in the present and future. MITCHELL: Hey, guess who was on roids? US: Who? MITCHELL: Bret Boone and Luis Gonzalez back in 2001! US: No *** Sherlock
  10. first off, Dusty is going to the Reds (i know it was a joke, but still...) secondly, a talking head on ESPN Radio thought the best fit for the Yankees would be..........Bob Brenely. Discuss
  11. the 4 day ASBreak sucks. Every team should play on: Opening Day Fourth of July Thursday after All Star Game Labor Day
  12. ha ha ha. everyone on this board would do this if that happened: http://www.gifflix.com/data/thumbnails/22/exploding-head.gif
  13. wow, i went from winning the non-premium last year to complete crap this year. oops
  14. the "white" part is simply because most people assume that black and hispanic players are going to be more athletic. call it latent racism (though extremely benign) but the "undersized white guy who manages a few hits through sheer effort of will and grit" is the effing American Dream (cue soundtrack from "Rudy")
  15. http://msnbcmedia1.msn.com/j/msnbc/Components/Photos/060902/060902_penn_hmed_5p.hmedium.jpg the other players just have to make more plays in the clutch
  16. FWIW (since i'm the one who started the topic) i signed up for Premium solely to help Tim out. i didn't really care about bells or whistles either. the intention of the thread was not "i'm not getting enough for premium" but rather "what can we add to entice more people to join." sorry if that was unclear
  17. I don't understand how that game would be perceived to not be a winnable game for the Nit Lions? because Penn State sucks?
  18. i applied for the Reggie Sanders position
  19. seems strange to say that the Cubs give him a better chance to win than the Yankees, but that Yankee club just looks like a sinking ship. they played out of their minds this year, but that offense is really old and there is no guarantee that the young pitching will hold up
  20. That's because those 50 points are always better, regardless of what the other teammates did. in a vacuum they are. but the goal of baseball is to score runs, not have the highest OPS And you score more runs by having guys with higher OPS. roughly speaking, yes. there are plenty of exceptions No, not really. sure there are. Tampa Bay out-slugged an out-OPS'd Anaheim this year but scored 40 fewer runs. I found that in about 10 seconds. I'm sure I could go on and on. as I said, those are the exceptions, but it's not a straight OPS=runs relationship I think you are missing the forest through the trees. No statistic will capture all that is important, but some statistics will capture most of what's important. The point being, that decision making is best done based on objective measures. which brings us to the part of sabermetrics I like, which is in scouting and objective predictions of future performance. i think they are designed to do this much better than tell the entire story of past performance
  21. isn't it a given that just about anyone would be an upgrade over Theriot?
  22. FWIW, I'm not an opponent of sabermetrics at all. my only beef is the complete individualizatoin of the stats. just wanted to get that out there before i was painted as a pro-grit and hustle idiot

  25. But the fact that runs have been scored would to a large extent have to do with the players that are around you in the order. If a player gets a 1 out double with no one on and is stranded, that is not his fault that no runs are scored. The best chance to score runs is to increase the amount of chances to score runs. So in the case that a players OPS is 50 points higher, he is giving his team more chances to score. i agree. but the fact of the matter is it's a team game, and you'll always have teammates and the performance of those teammates is always going to have an affect on your stats (even the non-counting stats), so, at times, it's worth not looking at statistics on a purely individual level
