    one might argue that without Sabathia, the Brewers would be 3rd place (or worse) right now. What pitcher did they have who was going to go 8-0 (while pretty consistently keep opposing teams from getting to whack around that bullpen) over this span? what if the replacement pitcher went 4-2 and the bullpen won the other two... they wouldn't be that much worse off... anyway, i'm just saying that it's not like he's worth 8 wins because he's 8-0 (not saying you're saying that, but the way you presented the point is sort of misleading).... no, i'm not saying he's worth 8 wins, I'm just (poorly) trying refute the notion that the Brewers aren't any better with him than they were without him. I think that's clearly nonsense

    That and Giambi put up a 1.137 OPS to Ichiro's .838. yeah, but what was the Yankee's record with him in the lineup? that's what really matters (so i've learned)

    It's a shame that Ichiro won the MVP in 2001 Olerud played 2 more games than him and Bret Boone one more. Clearly Ichiro should have come in 3rd in voting that year.

    kinda hard to say penn state "should have lost" when purdue needed 10 points in just over 2 minutes to even tie the game. would it have given purdue a better chance to send the game to overtime? yes, but even then purdue can still lose the game. so the blown call probably didn't affect the outcome of the game. not to mention that trying to get PSU fans to sympathize with blown ref calls is barking up the wrong tree

    Well, the fact that Wagner played so long ago and so little film footage of him exists, makes it a bit more understandable how a smart baseball fan might not know what team he was with. I know Babe Ruth played for the Astros and Ty Cobb was the #1 pick in the 1993 Expansion Draft, but beyond that....

    I'm also not much of a baseball historian, so I'll admit that I didn't even know that Honus Wagner was a Pirate. After the Clemente/Stargell era Pirates the next ones I think of are the Bonds/Van Slyke/Bonilla teams

    but it is how it works. I agree with you, but sadly, that's the state of Olympic competition these days.

    I know that I'm in the minority on all of this admiration about Dunn, but I would never call Dunn a "great hitter". A "great hitter" would be able to make contact with the ball more often than Dunn does. He has a .904 OPS and a .305 EQA. I would say that's a great hitter. I consider players like Bonds, Pujols, Manny Ramirez, ARod, Gwynn, etc. great hitters. Dunn is a great slugger, but not a great hitter in my book. As I stated earlier, the new emphasis on stats rewards sluggers and devalues non-sluggers. It is important to have some sluggers on a team, but it is great to have some players like Theriot, BRob, Ichiro, etc. on the team too. so you're saying that you'd rather have a team with a few theriots or ichiros on it rather than 8 Dunns? I bet I know which team would win

    So if it's the Cubs vs. the Angels in the World Series and K-Rod closes out Game 1 with an amped up times 10,000 version of his imbecilic act since it's the World Series, it won't bother you, all the hopping around and chest thumping and gesticulating? nope. Nor will it bother me when Soriano cranks a homerun, gazes at it, pulls out his blackberry to text his buddies about it, orders a deep dish pizza, then rides a unicycle around the bases while "Yakkity Sax" plays on the Wrigley organ.

    so what's the protocol? Umpires never think they're wrong, so I can't imagine them actively seeking out the help of instant replay if one of the managers doesn't push the issue

    maybe in 2012 they should have a worldwide fantasy draft to pick teams for all the sports.

    It was regional last year. If your provider only has one channel, then you'll only get the regional game. It doesn't apply to providers with alternate channels unless you don't have enough alternates to get all of the games. South Bend's Comcast has 2, plus an allegedly HD channel that doesn't appear to broadcast in HD. We'll see how that flies. being an HD channel doesn't mean everything on that channel is HD quality. The games will likely be HD but probably nothing but. BTN is pretty much all HD. I mean, if they are showing Purdue vs. Northwestern girl's softball in HD, why would they scrimp anywhere else

    The girl who won the floor exercise definitely deserved it. She was pretty flawless. I'll miss Bela when the games are over. He's TV gold. Oh, and Alicia Sacramone makes my pants tight
