  1. Some GM will probably give Eckstein the 4/36 that he wants, so it won't be on top for long.
  2. $10 million? HAHAHA Their payroll was around $70 million last year. I know it's going up this year, but that's still a huge payout for a reliever who's been injured for the better part of 3 years and looked terrible with Boston.
  3. Iowa State beat Iowa 56-47 to snap a 5 game losing streak to in-state opponents. They still can't hit a shot from the floor, but Iowa couldn't create enough open shots to do anything on offense. Hopefully a week off and a couple games against low-majors will get the offense going, but it needs to improve a lot if they want to finish .500 on the season.
  4. Looks like it right now. Pomeroy has them 9th in the country after last night (UNI-116, ISU-172, Iowa-185). There's nowhere near enough games played to make those ratings accurate yet, but the rest of the state is pretty much terrible so it's not too hard to be #1. If they can shoot 11-21 from 3 like they did last night (NBA-range 3's a lot of the time) they can beat a lot of teams.
  5. Iowa State just lost 79-44 to Drake. I'm gonna stop there because I don't think I can add anything more without the use of profanity.
  6. At times like this, I'm really happy the Cubs play in the NL Central.
  7. http://wintermeetings.mlblogs.com/nashvilleconfidential/2007/12/waiting_for_the.html Well, he is a left-handed outfielder with speed, should've been a no brainer for Jim.
  8. Surprisingly, this isn't exactly true, at least not to the extent I though it was. The Cubs hit LHP at .263/.325/.431 vs. .274/.335/.419 against RHP in 2007. Of course, being roughly equal at hitting both types of pitching doesn't justify going all out for a lefty just because there are too many right handed players in the lineup. Their biggest offensive weakness, as is always true with Hendry's teams, is that the .333 OBP they put up in 2007, 2 points higher than 2007 Juan Pierre. Getting rid of Murton's .352 OBP for a lefty (selected by Hendry) probably isn't going to help in that department (unless he signs Fukudome).
  9. I'd go with Wayne, Johnson, Maroney. Wayne is obvious, and Johnson is probable but should play and be the #1 option in that offense. Maroney's a safer option than the others, I think, considering that Walker is questionable, Curtis has a tough match up, and White plays for the Falcons. Bowe is the next option, imo, which means he'll have a huge day.
  10. Along with the fact that the O's would have to be insane to take Rolen when they're trying to rebuild, why would St. Louis pay Izturis $2.85M to sit on the bench? They have minor leaguers that can do that for a lot less.
  11. I fully expected this, but knowing who runs the Cubs it's still nice to have conformation they won't be signing an experienced veteran to take playing time away from their prospects like they usually do.
  12. No offense, but beating Oregon State isn't a good road win unless you're a high school basketball team. Lol, I didn't mean to imply Oregon State was any good, but when you're something like 15-51 in road games since 2002 like Iowa State, any road win is a good one.
  13. ISU gets a good road win @ Oregon State in OT, 71-64. Craig Brackins had 23 points and 10 rebounds to make up for a bad night from Wesley Johnson, who still isn't 100% back from an ankle injury. The win also makes the "BigXII-Pac10 Hardwood Series" 3-2 in favor of the Pac10, with most of the games comming up this weekend (just do better than the B10 did and I'll be happy).
  14. Yeah, they play the old Loyola-MD style of using a 7 second shot clock. Fun team to watch, gave Winthrop all they could handle in the Big South Championship Game last year too.
  15. Iowa State loses 65-56. Bradley did a great job keeping ISU from getting the ball inside, they could never overcome a 9-0 run to start the 2nd half. Clark was able to shut down Crouch, but they didn't have an answer for Ruffin. The offense really needs Wesley in there, because it looks terrible right now.
  16. Iowa State has their first real test tonight @ Bradley. They looked sloppy on offense this weekend against Winston Salem State and Centenary at home, partly because their most efficient scorer from last year, Wesley Johnson, was out with a sprained ankle. He was noticeably limping walking to the bench and probably won't play tonight. Either way the strategy should be to pound the ball inside where ISU has an advantage. Hoping for the upset (Bradley is favored by 10) but I don't like their chances w/o Johnson. I'm also going to be keeping an eye on UNC-Davidson, which could have upset potential since Davidson returns everyone from a 29-5 team that gave Maryland trouble in the tournament last year.
  17. Wow, surprised that the writers didn't fall into the 20 wins trap with Beckett. Not that Beckett would be a terrible choice, but CC had similar numbers and 40 more IP. You could make a case for Fausto or Lackey too I guess.
  18. I guess the ASun is having a good year. First Gardner-Webb over UK, now Mercer just beat USC 96-81.
  19. No need to guess with Jose Guillen, he's 1 of those 11. Would Neifi also be one of the 11 or is he already considered busted?
  20. What's the point of telling agents there are exactly 11 FA's in the report, but not naming names? If you're going to come out with them do it so GM's and agents know what there dealing with. The last thing we need is more speculation.
  21. I'd be intrested to see how this would work out, but wouldn't it be easier for Boston to trade one of their starters off and improve somewhere else like SS?
  22. Wow, wish I had ESPNU to see that one. GW was 9-21 in the mighty Atlantic Sun last year too. I don't remember a ranked team getting blown out at home vs a team like that.
  23. If Yahoo is right AP just broke the single game record for rushing yards in a game with 296, sick.
  24. This Adrian Peterson guy is pretty good.
  25. 109 yard FG miss return for San Deigo. Don't think that will ever be topped.
