  1. Hart can hit. Was a very good hitter at Maryland.
  2. He'd have to throw harder. He was hitting 97 against Cincinnati last week. At least that is what the Reds guys were saying. Who knows.
  3. I think the Reds will eventually trade Alonso, but it shouldn't be for Rolen. Votto has 1B locked up for a while.
  4. Its not really an "I told you so." I was just never gaga for Hill and have explained why. If has issues have been due to injury that is very unfortunate. It isn't anything personal against the guy, I wish him well. I will now retreat to my dark cave and take some more stabs.
  5. Jeremy Hermida is on his way to approaching Adam Dunn-like popularity on this board.
  6. Lou mentioned in the postgame press conference that Ramirez will get the day off.
  7. None of them. But it's a bit of a circlejerk to insist that stats are the only possible projection tool, and that anytime the stats are wrong it must be a fluke and there was no way anybody could have predicted it, and that anybody who did predict it wasn't really right. i don't think that's a circle jerk at all (whatever that means). just because people were right about him collapsing doesn't mean they were right for the correct reasons. he was a well above average pitcher for two seasons and nearly 50 starts, heading into his age 28 season. people who predicted his failure were taking stabs in the dark and got lucky. I don't know if my reasons were right or not, I don't really care either way. But it is easy for you to just claim my thoughts were dumb luck and that none of this should have ever happened.
  8. You don't get credit for an I told you so, as there was nothing to say this was coming. That's kind of a silly attitude, imo. Obviously he thought there was something. was it his 1.19 whip in '07? his nearly k per inning throughout 06-07? him being in the top 10 in the NL in h/9, k/9, k's, whip, etc in 2007? which of those are indicators of a future collapse? This is just my opinion, but for me it was really a lack of a 2nd quality pitch (no one pitch rich jokes please). He had an average fastball combined with a very good curveball. On days he didn't have his curveball there was not another pitch he could go to. He couldn't challenge hitters with his fastball and that led to a lot of nibbling and control problems because he couldn't get hitters out with it on a consistent basis. I think things might have been different for him had he had some kind of a cuttter, changeup, etc. Also, I think once he went around the league more than once it was easier for others teams to approach him. They were able to wait him out and get him into counts where he had to come with a fastball. At that point they either hit him really hard or walked. I know you'll probably disagree because of your stance on Hill, but those were my concerns about him then, and now.
  9. You don't get credit for an I told you so, as there was nothing to say this was coming. Actually I never was much of a fan of his. I took some heat for that on here for that stance (I think Raisin dubbed a Hill hater, heh). He needed something other than a FB and Curve. Especially when he had trouble controlling each of those pitches.
  10. I kept hoping he would be traded after the 2007 season, oh well.
  11. Billingsley is a stud. If I'm the Indians I would be all for this.
  12. Did you get the impression that they were severely overmatched in the Philly series with two blowout wins in either direction and an extra innings loss? I don't get the idea that they can't reasonably compete with better teams. What does that even mean? Your simplifying my point a bit. Until recently, the Cubs have been basically a .500 team, give or take a few games. They have looked decent at times, and then very bad at others. They need to build on this streak and get healthy. I've seen more bad than good so far to this point to get my hopes up too high.
  13. They're competing them with them by doing the same thing those teams are doing: winning series and beating up on the bad teams. No team plays mostly good teams in a season, and bad teams don't consistently beat up on other bad teams: then they wouldn't be bad teams. Im with 100%. It is just my personal opinion that the Cubs still have a ways to go, get Llly/Dempster back and healthy, Soto, etc. before I can be convinced that this team has a good chance of winning something. I'm encouraged by the play as of late, I hope it continues. This team has the pieces, maybe they are starting to fall into place.
  14. yeah but those are by far the two best teams in the NL. that might make you feel better about their chances in the playoffs, but you don't need to beat the phillies and LA to win the division. Hopefully they do and can advance beyond where they have been the last two years.
  15. Little early for that, since it would only be .5/gm up if it works out. I still can't get too excited about the standing yet. Long way to go, lots of injuries need to heal, and the Cubs need to put together an extended streak of good baseball to have any hopes of accomplishing anything. We are starting to do that. Nice play. I guess I need to see it against someone other than Washington and the Reds before I get too riled up. The Cubs play more average, mediocre and bad teams than good ones. Sure, you play the schedule that your given. I guess big picture I just need to see them get healthy and get to a point where they can reasonably compete with the likes of Philly and LA.

  18. Owings is either sick or injured according to Reds broadcast.
  19. Ryan couldn't be working with anyone better. If Rothschild ever leaves I would love for Riggs to take his place.
  20. He should, was a better hitter than pitcher in college.
  21. I mean, I guess I could have understood it had there been a runner on first and Lou wanted to stay out of the double play. But Johnson's already on second so Theriot's not going to ground into a DP. It is all about getting Johnson to third with Lee up and one out where basically any kind of contact ties up the game. Which is, in essence, playing for one run in the first inning with the top of the order up. Yep. Theriot has done this before though, I don't think its out of the question to assume he does this on his own at times.
