  1. Blind squirrel, meet nut. missing my point. I'm hardly a Neifi fan. He shouldn't be a full time starter. But, he isn't going to kill you either. It is comical to see people react around here when he is in the lineup.
  2. Yes he is. A good game does not erase a terrible career. My point is is that is getting a little ridiculous to see everybody freak out if he is in the starting lineup. He shouldn't be a starter, but obviously he will start some games this year. Can we stop the NSBB PMS whenever he is starting?
  3. Neifi w/ 3 hits. I thought the Cubs were supposed to lose if he played. At least thatis what you would have thought reading some posts on here. Neifi is not THAT bad people...
  4. Prime example of why I would take Murton every day of the week and twice on Sunday instead of Dunn. Dunn playing LF in Wrigley would be a disaster.
  5. Let the Choi and Epstein lovefest commence  Seriously, I hope the guy can figure it out and have a productive career. I liked him, but he has some big holes.
  6. Take the Cub glasses off for a bit here. I think the likelihood that Sammy used roids is very high. I don't have proof so I'm not going to say that he did. Sosa just completely balooned up starting around 97-98. True, he could put on some of that weight naturally, but how do you explain his head expanding so much. I use to think the head size theory was a joke, but just compare some photos, it is easy to see. Having said all that, Sammy was a great player. Just looking at things objectively though, I think its more likely than not that he was on something.
  7. Andy Katz reporting that Alford will interview at Missouri this week. Indiana has informed Alford that he is NOT going to be considered for the IU job. Apparently they have 2 other people in mind. Very interesting...
  8. Thanks Bruce. Not the first time posters have ignored the whole story, and only focused on the part that fits their agenda.
  9. XM is great, no contracts. Can pay by the month or purchase up to 5 years at once. If you decide to cancel, they will credit you the difference. Every baseball game you want...
  10. Philly Inquirer also says this: "The Phillies have talked with free-agent catcher Mike Piazza about a possible contract, a baseball source said, but it seems Piazza might have better options with the San Diego Padres or Chicago Cubs." huh?
  11. Good signing, but I'm not going to get too excited until he proves that he's healthy. I wouldn't expect him to be as good as he was in Houston. Last year you could tell he just wasn't there yet. Hopefully he can recover enough to be effective.
  12. and don't forget that Iowa nearly lost to Penn St. on Saturday. I am real confused on most of these teams in the Big 10. One game, some teams look like the class of the conference, the next they look like they could be in the cellar. The conference is pretty even this year and the winner of the Big 10 (probably Wisconsin) is going to have to be the best at protecting their home court. Penn State beat Purdont by 20 tonight, WTF?!?!? Penn State shouldn't beat anyone by 20, except perhaps a local girls' elementary school for the blind. ...giving them a 2-2 record in the Big Ten, tied with the mighty Illini Yeah they have played the same level of teams. Overall, no, they clearly haven't. But I would say that overall PSU has played a lot of mediocre to good teams while the Illini have played either very good teams or complete jokes. PSU is 10-5, with wins over Cornell, Nicholls St., LIU Brooklyn, UMKC, St. Francis, IPFW, New Hampshire, Mt.St. Mary's, Northwestern and Purdue, and losses to Texas A&M, Clemson, Pitt, Ohio St. and Iowa (by 4 points). Overall, better than you would expect, with the losses to teams you'd expect and wins over who you might guess (with NU being an upset probably). Illini is 16-2, with wins over So. Dakota St., Texas Pan-Am, Texas Southern, Wichita St., Rutgers, N. Carolina, Xavier, Arkansas LR, Georgetown, Oregon, Coppin St., Missouri, SE Missouri St., Tenn. Martin, Michigan St. and Michigan, and losses to Iowa and Indiana. They have beat some big conference teams for sure, but some of those other teams are truly pitiful. In no way am I implying that Penn St. is even close to being on par with Illini talent-wise, and I fully expect Illionois to spank the Nittany Lions when they go head to head. But I just wouldn't gloat over some of those wins (especially when you only beat Wichita St. by 1 point. If I thought it was worth arguing, I would figure out the opponents' records overall, but as I said, it's not an argument I can make Be careful Derwood. Don't forget the 11th Commandment. "Thou Shalt Not Disrespect the Illini"
  13. I have a book, put out by the Louisville Redbirds in 1982, commemorating the year the drew 1 million fans. They held a huge banquest and invited several Hall of Famers in for the event. My grandfather had access since he was the team photographer. I was 1 year old at the time so all credit goes to him for picking one of these up. The cover pages is signed by: Ernie Banks Joe Dimaggio Mickey Mantle Pee Wee Reese Harmon Killebrew Vida Blue Henry Aaron Carl Hubbell Brooks Robinson Al Kaline There are others, those are just the ones of the top off my head. I'd love to know what its worth, juST out of curiosity. I don't think I will ever get rid of it.
  14. If the Iowa fans didn't storm the court, they'd be disrespecting the Illini program. ;) Right, you know Illinois has lost like 1 home game the last decade, yet we weren't even mentioned the entire day when they talked about hardest places to play at. But, that's ok just keep acting like our program doesn;t exist and get all fired up when we lose espn. plus doug "credit card" gottlieb tried to compare ther 4 guard system at villanove to our 4 guard system. saying theres were better. First off we only had 3 guards last year, secondly name me one of there guys who will be the third pick in the draft. Do you sit around with a notebook so you can count the number of time Illinois is disrespected? Who's acting like they don't exist? They are a fine team. I don't think they will win the Big 10 though. There I go again, disrespecting. The IU/OSU game was a hell of a game. Both of those teams have a better scoring balance than Illinois. Illinois defense is very good, but IU and OSU's aren't exactly bad.
  15. So, Indiana's not a good team because they lost to ISU? Not gonna earn respect by putting down every other team in the country. There was really no reason to bring up IU. And if you think IU isn't that good, then what does that make Illinois, who was picked behind them, and not unreasonably so? BTW, Memphis is twice as good as any team Illinois has played all season. and this certainly is putting down Illinois in my opinion. and its fans and numerous people in this thread. no, you're crazy, just like i'm crazy and paranoid. my problem with being called a paranoid whiner is that maybe there's a reason to be a paranoid whiner. you can't consistently negate the returning runner-up in the NC game, two-time defending OUTRIGHT Big Ten Champ--which returned the B10 POY and their top big man, is adding their best athlete, and possibly the best shooter in the B10--without ruffling a few feathers of some illini fans. they're negated when people say the Illini should feel special to be picked third in the B10. newsflash: MSU has been picked to finish first in the conference each of the last two years--they haven't, what's so different about this year other than the hype surrounding their supposed star players? IU couldn't beat ISU (i think this is the point of bringing up the sycamores), what makes them think that the illini are going to roll over? is it the addition of killingsworth? he's a very good player and a dominant force down low, but the illini players have seen better. and then to hear some nimrod OSU-guy (mr. kellog) come out and say that the conference is actually up, despite putting 2 teams in the final four and 1 in the title game last season is absolute torture to fans who have been looking for their team to garner some NATIONAL accolades after going 37-2 last season. it looks like the illini are just going to have to take the rest of the B10 out back, tie them to a tree and bash them with a shovel like they did last year, to get any recognition. but why should they get it? they did it last year and nobody learned. Dude, they got loads of respect and recognition last year, what are you talking about? Yes, they bring back Brown and Augustine, but don't forget they also lost some key guys (Williams, Head, Powell). Again, why do you care so much what Clark Kellog's opinion is? He didn't bash Illinois. I think there are about 4 teams that could posibly win the Big10 this year. Just because someone doesn't pick Illinois doesn't automatically mean they are "disrespecting" them. Your team is good, accept it. You don't need NATIONAL accolades.
  16. This is not a knock against Burnitz, but how sad is it that he may be signing "the richest deal in free agent history"? Wow....
  17. translation: the big ten has sucked the last 2 years because illinois has won it. despite putting 2 teams in the final four, the big ten sucked because illinois won it. illinois could win 8 national titles in a row and each of those 8 years would be a "down year for college basketball". what a joke. people are so afraid to give illinois any credit for anything they do. Do any group of fans whine more about "no respect" than Illinois fans? Who cares what people say, prove them wrong on the court, like Illinois has done the past couple years. If your wining it shouldn't matter what others say. The inferiority complex is getting old. this is a message board, the place for whining. and what's getting old is the repeated lack of respect for the illini, who, as you've said, should have earned it with their performances over the last few years. i don't know if the illini just aren't exciting enough for some people, or maybe it's that they don't have the program pedigree of an MSU or IU, or even an OSU, or maybe they don't like players who get angry with their girlfriends when refuse to watch roots--i don't know--you tell me. why do you think the illini get disrespected every year? I don't think they get disrespected every year. Everybody heaped praise on Illinois last year, and deservedly so. I don't think its a slap in the face to not predict them #1 in the conference this year. There are some very good teams in the Big10 this year. Hell, finishing 2nd or 3rd this year could still equal a top 10 team. Illinois is undefeated, but besides a win against a young (up and down) UNC team, who have they beaten? Xavier is a decent squad, but not top 25 material. They are a good team, but I don't think they are top 5 in the country good. Michigan state has had its ups and downs as well, same can be said for IU. But again, It wouldn't surprise me to see any of those teams win the conference. Nobody is out to get Illinois, picking them third still means they are a damn good team.

  19. .267/.350/.382/.732 yeah, you're right, we can't use a utility man who knows how to get on base. a call to macias is in order, huh? All II'm saying is this guy has had issues everywhere he's played. By your rationale, every GM in baseball was stupid for not picking him up last summer when he went on waivers. Nobody wanted him. The Reds sent him to AA after he cleared. I don't want a player who quits on his team, which is exactly what Jimenez did to the Reds last year. And where did I say I wanted Macias? if he's willing to play, he's willing to play. and i think he's willing to play. Whatever you say. Do you have inside information? he signed a minor league deal, i don't have to have inside info. I know he signed a minor league deal, its his only option. Why would anyone offer him a major league deal? did the discussion shift all of a sudden? i thought we were talking about his willingness to play. I don't think it shifted, it has been a long day though. Jimenez is a quitter, he's done it before and he'll probably do it again. Signing a minor league deal doesn't show a great desire to play. It shows that he has no other offers and now he's desperate. He knows anybody could have picked him up on a waiver claim last year but they didn't. The Reds let him rot in AA because nobody else wanted him. He has some skills and some pretty good years in the past. I'm not doubting his ability. I'm doubting his committment and attitude, and I'm not the only one. So are 29 other GM's.

  22. signing giles would be admitting that there's something to the statistic of on-base percentage. hendry will never do that, he hates OBP, and will go out of his way to avoid players who have it. Who wouldn't want Giles? But I think its unfair to criticize Hendry for not signing Giles. Giles had no intentions of leaving the West Coast. He turned down bigger money elsewhere to stay in SD. according to who? Ummm..maybe Giles? Giles signed for 3/30 to stay in SD. Didn't Toronto offer him some big money? I know LA was in on him, but they are also a West Coast team. Giles has made no secret over the years as to his preference for playing on the West Coast. This isn't news.
