  1. http://www.statcorner.com/CatcherReport.php yeah if you buy all that, sure. or if you just buy that montero is really, really good at it and castillo is really, really bad you can believe those two things and still not think its worth __ runs/wins/$.
  2. http://www.statcorner.com/CatcherReport.php yeah if you buy all that, sure.
  3. that's crazy money for martin, but they better just push all that $ into the pile they have waiting for lester.
  4. he and niang are going to allow each other to score 40 points.
  5. to actually say this, you have to be: a) a complete skeptic of the effect pitch framing can have b) totally unaware at the discrepancy which exists between the two players statcorner: 2014 2013 2012 total Martin +11 +17 +24 52 Castillo -24 -17 -5 -46 Baseball Prospectus: 2014 2013 2012 total Martin +19 +15 +23 57 Castillo -10 -16 -3 -29source: http://www.statcorner.com/CatcherReport.php http://www.baseballprospectus.com/sortable/index.php?cid=1667331 so, i'm really curious to hear which it is...because it's not unfathomable (to me) to believe that an event on which they have influence about 7,000-10,000 times could really add up to a significant effect, especially when scouting sources universally agree they're at opposite ends of the spectrum in terms of ability it's simply impossible for me to hand-wave a factor that could alone likely amount to a 2-3 win difference and it's impossible for me to just accept that pitch framing alone amounts to a 2-3 win difference.
  6. yes, that's obviously my concern. he was pretty blah from ages 26-29, and the concern is he'll be even blah-er from ages 32-36. which isn't some crazy leap to make.
  7. who cares. that doesn't mean you have to give russell martin $75 mil.
  8. Your definition of kinda sucks, kinda sucks. Over half the MLB kinda sucks if you put Martin in that group. but half of mlb doesn't make $15 mil/yr. fine. but I'm not sure that's worth $75 mil.
  9. man, I am usually all about signing ALL the free agents, but I can't believe you guys want to give $75 mil to a 32 year old catcher that has kinda sucked 5 of the last 6 seasons because he's good at catching the ball. craziness.
  10. Catchers have worse aging curves than any other player. I hope the Cubs stay far, far away. Pay a coach $100,000/year to teach Wellington to frame, if it's that important. http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/catcher-aging-is-a-curve-not-a-cliff/ And I understand your inclination to write off pitch framing as nebulous sorcery. I really do. But when you consistently grade out as really terrible by everyone who evaluates such things, something is probably pretty wrong unless you think there's some sort of Welington Castillo conspiracy among these guys. I don't doubt that he's terrible at it, I just doubt it's worth 25 runs a year or whatever.
  11. well if questioning that the difference between montero and castillo's ability to catch a ball is 50 runs per season counts as skepticism, I guess i'm skeptical.
  12. so pitch framing is going to be the thing smart people swear is undervalued this offseason, huh? that's kinda boring.
  13. I wish there was a way I could properly express how little I care about the football game between these teams in comparison to the basketball game between these two teams. I would gladly accept a 49-0 loss this weekend if it somehow gave iowa st 1 additional point in the basketball game.
  14. A&M is certainly a dumpster fire right now, but Tennessee is definitely a team on the rise. Regardless of whether they are that good or not, you are still having to play against and get pushed around by very high caliber athletes for 5 straight weeks. Replace Tenn and aTm with Big 10 teams like Illinois and Minnesota and it's not the same. Illinois and Minnesota, between them, have 2 four-star players they've recruited in the past 3 years and 0 five-stars. On the contrary, Tennessee and aTM, in the same three year span, have 63 four-star players and 6 five-stars. This isn't an SEC rah-rah post, it's just the truth when you objectively look at the numbers. You aren't playing the same type of athletes when you play a Minnesota as you are when you are playing a Tennessee. well at least now i don't feel bad for ole miss after last night anymore
  15. well that's [expletive] bonkers. no way he gets McCann money.
  16. ole miss does not excel in end of game scenarios. yikes.
  17. I heard that comment too and was about to steer my car into a light post if not for the fresh pizza sitting on my passenger seat. If you want to say they are 2-3 years from reaching the peak of their collective performance, I suppose that argument could be made, but 3 years away from even being a playoff competitor is ridiculous. the royals nearly won the World Series with james shields, three good relievers and a bunch of turds for crying out loud.
  18. oklahoma's no joke either. can't believe iowa st bball is to the point where they lose TWO first team all conference players and i still think they are better this year. also can't believe that they had TWO first team all conference players...
  19. maybe if your joke was funnier people wouldn't be so annoyed.
  20. I mean wow matheny. wow.
  21. Oklahoma St. is not good. They struggled against a bad Texas Tech team, struggled against a worse ISU, and barely beat an even worse KU team. I know they played FSU close in the first game of the season, but their backup QB is now the full time QB, and they're about to start playing real teams now. I wouldn't be surprised if they closed the season 1-5, with their only win coming at home vs WVU. yeah, you can put okie st there for now if you want I guess, but there's no way they're anywhere close to that by the end of the season. wasn't impressed by them at all.
  22. Arkansas' qb is just horrendously awful. is he like a 3rd string freshman or something?
  23. previous "record" was $10k for mike leach in 2007. yeah, i'd say alleging the conference is scheming to specifically screw your team over is probably gonna get you the biggest fine in the history of the conference....
  24. lol, iowa st AD fined a whopping $25k (big 12 record) for postgame presser where he indicated his frustration with iowa st consistently getting screwed.
  25. it's weird to think that people thought paying soriano crippled the team or whatever.
