  1. kudos to you for somehow finding a way to bash patterson when discussing a game that he wasn't in the state for. i've been trying to think of a way to do that because i too blame him for last night's loss. the negative energy he left when he was sent down to AAA is still having an ill effect on the cubs. damn him! I'm not just ranting about last nights loss. I'm talking about an organizational philosophy. I only mention Corey as the poster boy of the fact that potential does not make someone a good baseball player and this team needs to focus on baseball players that know how to play the game. you have no idea about how well corey focuses on the game. he's never made a mental mistake comparable to barrett's late inning buffonery. or failing to cover first base after two other guys had failed to do it just a couple innings before. to say corey is the poster boy for lack of fundamentals when he didn't even participate in last night's fundamental disaster is just you taking every oppurtunity to bash someone who you obviously don't like. it would be like me bringing up neifi's sub-.300 obp while discussing last night's west tenn game.

  3. as i mentioned earlier, it's one of those things that dusty himself says so many times people start to believe it. like how larussa kept saying and saying and saying how great pujols is defensively. now every time you watch a cardinal game the announcers talk about how great he is at 1b. or how dusty talks about how he's not used to being home for the postseason, but in reality, he is.
  4. wow, was THAT a fundamental disaster. has a big league team ever played so poorly fundamentally over the course of one game? three times the pitcher failed to cover first, a botched defense of a sac bunt, and then the last play. i guess when dusty says he always has a strong fundamental team, it's just one of those things that people believe because he says it a lot. barrett seems to tense up quite a bit in situations like that. remember when he threw the ball away on that crazy play in cincy?
  5. K's are not the be-all-end-all. You can be effective getting grounders and pop-ups. i'm not going to get into the strikeout argument for the ten billionith time. more times than not, high k guys have more success than low k guys.
  6. franklin says he'll never take a vitamin again. no word on whether he'll take steroids again.
  7. good grief...borowski has given up a total of ZERO earned runs since being signed by tb. that covers ten appearances (counting tonight) and 9 2/3 ip. only three k's during that span, however.
  8. i usually wouldn't pull my closer, but it was looking more and more like dempster just couldn't throw a strike. i'd leave him out there if he was giving up hits, but when he's nowhere near the zone, that's another story. then i remembered what the cubs' other options were and silently withdrew my request for him to be taken out. :D
  9. good to see lawton up on the top step of the dugout pumping his fist on the bell k. one of these days dempster is gonna blow a really, really, really big game.
  10. i can hear dusty already... 'you guys complain when i leave zambrano in, you complain when i take him out.' of course there's a difference between leaving him in to struggle thru 138 pitches and taking him out at 103 when he's cruising. all right, dempster, you have four pitches to throw another strike.
  11. get him out. that was almost a granny.
  12. can't believe z is coming out. nice ab, hollandsworth. enjoy the bench for the next two months.
  13. two walks for corey...one intentional.
  14. Really? I'd trade any Cub if it made the team better. I'm sure KC could put together a nice package for Pie. THE only player on the Royals, or in their system I would even considered for Felix Pie is Zack Greinke. And even then, I still wouldn't do it. Pie is going to be a "special" player, and you don't trade special players. You know this how? Special like Patterson? Or Hill? Choi? Harris? Not doubting Pie has the skill set to do well, but I'm not buying any prospect as being "the next big thing" until they actually prove it. ok, so who on kc's roster do you want for pie since he'll just be another disappointment?
  15. thanks for taking our questions... you've always been a big on-base percentage guy. however, patience and taking walks are not very often associated with the cubs' organization. what has been the organization's attitude toward your approach at the plate? have they encouraged you to be more aggressive, or are they content with you being a guy who walks and uses your speed to turn walks into doubles? also, while in mesa this spring, my brother and i noticed that you were wearing some unusual looking pants while playing in a big league spring game...the part of the pants around the ankles didn't have the usual elastic, so the bottom of the pant leg was very loose. i thought that it was maybe because you got whatever pants were available at the big league park, but then i saw you wearing the same type of pants the next day at fitch. do you do that to your pants on purpose?
  16. Thanks for taking our questions... I enjoy the journal that you do for At the Yard. How did you get approached for a gig like that? Also, have you been able to maintain your five burrito/week average? And I go to Mesa every year for spring training. Being that you seem to be a burrito connoisseur, who would you say has the best burritos in the Phoenix/Mesa area? Thanks again, and best of luck the rest of the season.
  17. Uh....Dusty? What the #@$ else are you going to do with him? they're going to have a footrace tomorrow to determine who gets to bat leadoff. everyone knows the fastest guy on the team bats leadoff. also, if you're small it helps too.
  18. Hill also AVERAGED a little more then 6.1 IP in the minors. This is a not NEW thing. The Cubs need pitchers who can eat innings. And with today's OUTING by Maddux, the Cubs now have three starters who can barely go 5 innings. So, if you don't think the Cubs shouldn't be concern about Hill's (Maddux and Williams) inability to go deep into a game CONSISTANTLY, then you are overlooking a problem. I like Hill, but his stamina tells me, he is a middle reliever dressed up as a starter. You can't have three guys in the rotation, barely giving you 5 IPs per start, you taxed the bullpen TOO quick. And ignoring the problem won't go away. 6 1/3+ per outing isn't good? who do you want out there, bob feller? and hasn't williams gone 6+ in five of his six starts?
  19. Of freaking course it would be a 2:00 start. I have to play golf on Sunday after a couple of partners asked me to join them for a tee time at 1:00. Crap. You can't seriously be considering missing the game to play golf? You can't seriously be suggesting I blow off my bosses? to quote arrested development....there's gotta be a better way to say that. anyway, this is weak. haven't you been one of the people harrassing me for missing an i-cub game or two? No, but that is an oversight on my part. I will certainly make the necessary revisions to my schedule. anytime you get a chance to harrass me, you gotta take advantage of it. i just hope you're not playing backgammon with the rockefellers at the country club when the next group harrassment goes down.
  20. i don't even know if i'd want the chance to interview nomar knowing that i couldn't get his autograph...that would just burn at me. seriously though, great job!

  22. agreed. and don't knock the reds. obviously their six OFer, no pitching strategy has worked out great for them so far...why mess with it?
  23. it was really annoying watching BBTN and hearing reynolds and kruk make it sound like farnsworth sucks. they said he was always getting battered around in the NL, and that they're not sure it was a good idea moving him out of the AL, where he's had some success. and i believed em too, because i trust john kruk's evaluation of players better than schuerholz's.
  24. that really is pathetic. heck, there's usually 4x that many people in peoria just for any ol' weekend game. there was upwards of 9,000 in peoria to see nomar.
