  1. I truly hope that Hendry is not counting on any of the above named pitchers to start the season in the rotation. Last year they all proved that they weren't ready quite yet. next year isn't last year.
  2. man, if league average starting pitching costs you 9-10 mil a year, just pay marshall and mateo $300k each to provide somewhat below average starting pitching. take the $20 mil you were going to spend on lilly and meche and spend it on some offense. i'd rather pay roughly $26 mil/year on soriano, drew, mateo and marshall than on $26 mil/year gmj, durham, meche and lilly.
  3. the cubs better not end up having to panic and give GMJ a six year deal because they focused all their energy on soriano, only to have him sign w/ the angels. learn from the furcal adventure, please.
  4. sure, they were cheap and young, but their 1.41, 1.56 and 1.58 WHIPS last year weren't anything you'd actively try to acquire. In other words, having seen what they did last year, you wouldn't try trading for them, and they would all be behind Marmol/Marshall/Guzman/Hill/Ryu in the Cub pitching logma. i understand that. but seeing how expensive acquiring top notch starting pitching is through FA, i would rather take my chances on some young guys panning out than trading them all for some crappy LEGITIMATE lead off hitter. by the way, i've noticed that LEGITIMATE has been replaced by BONA FIDE by some writers this offseason. that will be an interesting development to track.
  5. if starting pitching really is this expensive/hard to get, i am doubly happy that hendry traded three starters for pierre.
  6. oh boy. :D thanks!
  7. Pierre played a ton of games this year. Didn't make him any more valuable than Drew. Heck, Drew in 72 games in 2005 was more valuable than Pierre in 162 that year. I'm not saying injuries aren't a concern at all. But one broken bone from a beanball the last three years has been Drew's only serious injury. So while it's not a great bet that he's going to play in excess of 150 games, I have a hard time betting against him to play in less than 120 either. But let's assume Drew plays in 120 games. Drew for 120 plus Pagan for 42 is a darn good bet to outproduce Soriano, especially when you consider Soriano's numbers are most likely going to start to collape back to his career norms. heck, pagan would probably steal 40 bases if he played all season (he'd get 40+ hits in 162 games, right?)...why not just give him cf? after all, we all remember how hendry's appetite for speed worked out last season.
  8. thanks. i've seen that blue one on ebay before, but i kinda wanted a white one with pinstripes. i may end up settling with the blue one, however. that expos one is pretty sweet, but if i'm getting a dawson sig on a jersey, i feel like it's gotta be a cubs jersey.
  9. Lets not get carried away. Murton may be a fine LF someday, but Lee's numbers dwarfed Murton's last year. Almost .895 OPS compared to .809, 37 HR's compared to 13 HR, 116 RBI's to 62 RBI. Murton is not in CLee's league yet. are those numbers $12 mil better than murton's?
  10. all right, jersey experts...i need an authentic andre dawson jersey. point me to the proper internet destination.
  11. i can't tell you how much more i want jd drew than any of those guys. it's not even close. i don't even know why carlos lee is in the conversation at this point. he would be a huge waste of money that would not fill any hole.
  12. i'd probably rather give drew a 3-4 year deal than soriano a 5-6 year deal, but i want one of those two guys. i could live with a 2b/cf combo of soriano/roberts or durham/drew.
  13. he's been on ESPN Deportes for a while and has also been a regular contributor on XM for at least the last 2 years...other than that i'm not sure of his background he's been regularly being terrible on xm for the last two years.
  14. Wow, that is absolutely ridiculous. I just cannot fathom paying that much for one unproven player in the MLB. they'll make it back and then some in t-shirt sales alone.
  15. i don't know...just seems like ramirez has been catching a lot of flak over the past few weeks. people should be commending him for sticking with the cubs for less $. those kind of comments seem to be bashing ramirez.
  16. rogers' article makes no sense. http://chicagosports.chicagotribune.com/sports/baseball/cubs/cs-061112rogers,1,7323026.column?coll=cs-cubs-headlines so...is he glad they re-signed him or what? and why is aramis suddenly the poster boy for the cubs' failures over the past three seasons? and why do people want to make him out to be a choker? does anyone remember the 2003 postseason?
  17. yeah, he built a 100 mil team that finished with 96 losses last year...i'd like to see somebody try to bash that! suckers!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  18. yeah, i'm very happy hendry was able to keep ramirez. but, as of right now, his only accomplishment is keeping together one of the worst teams in baseball...i'll save my praise for hendry once he improves the team.
  19. david eckstein winning the world series mvp was the worst thing that could ever happen to the cubs. "i've decided i like guys who hustle" -- jim hendry, 2007 cubs convention
  20. His performance as a GM indicates otherwise. What about his performance indicates that he is stupid? what about his performance indicates that he isn't? he took a payroll that's higher than almost every team in baseball and used it to build one of the worst teams in baseball. You are truly asking someone to explain why they think a human being capable of being a General Manager of a Major League Baseball team is not stupid? i haven't seen any evidence that hendry is capable of being a gm for a major league baseball team. i maybe would stop short of saying he's an idiot, but he's certainly been a gigantic, without-a-doubt failure as a gm. he's made a couple decent trades, but he also put together the most pathetic team in all of baseball last year. the cubs are a laughingstock, and he's in charge. he's been terrible. Thank you. I disagree with your opinion, but at least you are calling him a failure instead of an idiot or stupid. An argument can be created for him failing the Cubs, but it cannot be created for him being stupid or an idiot. well, i may say he's a stupid gm or an idiotic gm.

  23. humberto! cubs couldn't have competed with that.
