    they also list jennings for willy taveras as a possibility. there's no way taveras has the same value as those two cub pitchers. taveras is terrible, and i would never, ever, ever trade gooz and gallagher for him, let alone one of them.

    No thanks -- I'd rather have both Gooz an Gallagher or at least use them to get a more impactful addition to the roster than Jennings. yeah, it's not that i love either of those guys that much, but i'd rather use them to get something better than a 1 year rental.

    one problem is that players do not always produce at their split levels when platooned. That's true, but I think that there's enough guys who have been in mostly platoon situations(e.g. getting Dellucci and Craig Wilson for a RF tandem) so that problem can be minimized. Dellucci and Wilson for a platoon has the be the worst idea I have heard in a long time. at least you've provided a lot of support for your position.

    i agree...let's only sign nice guys who are good in the clubhouse. that's what the cubs have done over the past couple seasons, and it's worked out great.

    and which pitcher would you like to spend it on? a half season of barry bonds is worth much, much more than 30 gil meche starts, that's for sure.

    If a team has two guys for one postion it is ineficient based on a 25 man roster. I suppose, if the guy on the short end could play other positons that would be ok. However, he is still only valuable N -2/3 of the time becuase of his poor splits. If the palyer is inexpensive the differnce is less. Last year Nixon made $7.5 JJ makes $6 million Last year Craig Wilson made $3.3 million you're making it sound like the guy not starting that day doesn't get to dress for the game. He might as well not dress if he isn't valuable. There are many games when I wish Neifi didn't dress. Suppose you have the guy on the bench who cannot hit righties. The other team puts in a lefty pitcher. The guy gets up and they take out the lefty. yeah, that happens all the time regardless of who the bench player is. i don't get your point.

    More livable, but then you have to get rid of Izturis somehow. i really don't think that would be that hard. you may have to pay some of his $, but someone would take him. heck, he can be the cubs' backup ss if he wants. he'll probably be hurt half the season anyway.

    Mark Prior doesn't do the towel drill because he got hurt, he's done it since at least USC, if not longer, to keep his arm loose and to keep his form, if I'm not mistaken.. But funny, original joke anyways. The towel drill is just a checkpoint to make sure everything is correct to be able to smack the glove from max stride plus 5 feet. It does nothing as far as improving mechanics or endurance, it just tells you that if you're not hitting the glove, something is wrong. If you miss to the left or right it is a balance issue and if you're short, you're rotating too soon. Of course, you're always better off having someone there who knows what they're doing and can breakdown your delivery at each important stage. I've never understood this odd fascination with the towel drill. Someone needs to get over excited about pitchers doing long toss, at least that improves arm strength. thanks for taking the fun out of that hillllllllllllarious joke.

    you're right. the 'good' stats have all been in the paper. that stats you listed, however, don't qualify as 'good' stats. my goodness.

    It's Bruce Miles, and all the other sites got their information from the San Fransisco Chronicle. They probably got their info from Schmidt's agent, which Bruce said was probably a false rumor that the agent thought up. I doubt that SI.com and ESPN would have it as such big news if there was only a blurb about it in the San Francisco Chronicle.     But why is he in the big leagues still? The reason is because he plays great defense, calls a game pretty well, handles a pitching staff well, great tutor to the young players, and he throws out base runners better than most catchers in the league. His defense is why he is still in the big leagues. he drives in runs with his shinguards.

    Oh yeah, give me 1 example of a team that didn't work for. No statistics, please. Last years Cubs. Spending a bunch of money on relievers is stupid if you completely neglect the starting rotation and offense, as the Cubs did last year. If you address all three areas, then sure, go get yourself some reliable relief help. that's the problem. relievers fluctuate so much year in and year out, that it's foolish to throw 3-4 year deals at them. i can't think of any big contract middle relievers that have lived up to their contract.

    After the All-Star break, Hill was 6th in the NL in ERA, 7th in K/9, 10th in K/BB, 4th in WHIP, and 4th in OPS against. It was more than just a few good starts, Hill was a genuine ace in the second half. In the second half, a couple of months. I like him, a lot. I just don't want to rely on him to be your #2 starter after one half season of good starts. who would you like to count on as the #2 starter? prior? i'd be all for schmidt, but it doesn't look like the cubs are interested. hill's second half is likely better than anything gil meche, adam eaton or jason marquis have done in their careers, and you don't have to pay 20-40 million bucks for rich hill.

    Word. who says they don't enjoy/focus on the game? just b/c some enjoy the game as a lyrical ode to america filled with hustle, grit, heart, chemistry and intangibles doesn't mean that some can't enjoy it for other reasons.

    I really don't get ideas of starting Lugo or Soriano in CF. They have COMBINED to play....wait for it....ONE game in CF in their careers. I know, let's sign JD Drew to play catcher! Maybe Vicente Padilla can spell Izturis at SS! you're right. moving padilla to ss is just like moving soriano one spot over in the OF to CF.
