  1. It might have had something to do with him possibly going into the NFL draft, so the Cubs sweetend the deal? Here's an article about his signing, although it's kind of vague about the reason he was given a no trade clause. http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=2736354 Yup. he was drafted in the 5th round I believe, and he was considering passing and entering the NFL draft, but the Cubs didnt want to let him walked, so they gave him a ridiculous deal for a 5th rounder with an NTC.
  2. Why not? I'd give up Jeff Samardzija for Jake Peavy in a heartbeat. Even if Samardzija reached his ceiling, which is pretty unlikely, he'll never be as good at pitching as Jake Peavy. While Shark did look pretty awesome in his first few relief appearences, he has only had marginal success in both AA and AAA, and ts still unknown if he'll be able to make it as a starter, especially snce his off speed stuff isnt there. Its not like Peavys a rent-a-player, hes signed through 2012 with an option for 2013.
  3. The Dodgers would never trade Kershaw for Peavy and certainly not Kershaw + Eithier or kemp. If Khalil Greene enters the mix they could. If they dont end up over paying for Furcal, the Dodgers dont have a definite choice for short stop, and that way, they could use that money toward over paying for Manny instead.
  4. I know that the Pads would prefer not sending Peavy to a divsion rival, but if the Dodgers were to offer Kershaw+ Ethier or Kemp, would the Cubs or Braves be able tobeat that?
  5. I would be happy with a Marshall for Peavy trade. I don't understand why they would want Harden, or why Hendry would trade him right now. Because rebuilding teams always go for players with only 1 more year under team control who may or may not start 20 games all season. duh.
  6. I have a feeling that the Cubs and Braves will keep switching back and forth a the frontrunners until the dal get done.
  7. Padres don't get enough, and the Marlins want Maybin to be their CF. If Pie is moved anywhere else besides CF, his value goes down a crapload. I coulkd see it: Cubs get: Peavy, Hermida Padres get: Marshall, Olson, Pie, Cedeno, Ceda Marlins get:Castillo, Atkins/Veal, a few of the afore mentioned Cubs low level prospects. Marlins get the shortend here by a good chunk, imo. Thats how they operate. They unload players before they're due a pay day for prospect packages. They're only giving up 2 players, questionable ones at that in this scenerio.

  9. Exactly what does getting Peavy accomplish for them? They lose a guy in Escobar who has potential to be a all-star SS for the next decade, and any prospects that they give up they lose out on developing them to be part of a competing team 3-4 years down the road. There is no way they contend this year and it's unlikely they contend they next 2 seasons. They'll end up giving up a lot, plus the pads will likely expect whoever gets him to pick up at least part of the contract, and thats not something that rebuiling teams should be doing.
  10. At what point do the Braves tell themselves that they are building for a few years down the road, and not 2009? How much of the future does a team want to give up, when it is highly doubtful that they will be ready to compete with the Mets and Phillies, and maybe even the Marlins the next few years?
  11. Josh Vitters, Drew Rundle. Tony Thomas, Brandon Guyer, Jovan Rosa, Starlin Castro, Junior Lake, Dae-Eun Rhee, James Russell? I was thinking more Hernandez and Suarez. Forgot Suarez and was going to go in and edit him in, not sure how valuable Robert Hernandez is. Welington Castillo? Marquez Smith? Ryan Flaherty? Castillo's good. Smith is mediocre at best. Flaherty can't be traded until the summer. Cant they make him a PTBNL?

  13. What does that even mean? It means we've given them a proposal, but are interested in hearing any changes or counterproposals they may have. In other words, we don't want them to make a deal with Atlanta or anyone else without giving us a chance to beat it. So basically, the Pads are going to try to force the Braves to put Hanson or Jurgens in there. And they should. I really dont see the Braves as being ready to compete with the Mets or Phils in the next few years anyway.
  14. Mark Pawelek and Ryan Harvey Didn't we cut Pawalek? I thought he was gone. They sent him home at the end of the season because of something having to do with his passport. There was specualtion that is was the end for him in the organization, but it hasnt happened. yet.
  15. you could have done that a half hour ago What am I missing here?
  16. Seriously Hendry, go in for the kill. By the time I get home from work, I want to be reading about a done deal.
  17. I wouldnt mind Lowe, but I think its a pretty safe bet that as far as pitchers go, is will be Peavy or Dempster, and then move on to other things.
  18. Im curious abou the Cubs young pitching. Mashall? Ceda? Atkins? Papelbon? Would it cause a massive NSBB uproar if Jay Jackson was involved?
  19. Those are untouchable stats if ever I saw them.
  20. So? I'd take Derosa in RF (Fukudome/Johnson CF platoon) and Fontenot at 2B everyday if it meant Peavy in the rotation. Still even if you give up Pie, Ceda, Marshall, and Cedeno for Peavy, you still have Castillo, Hill, and others (including recent draft picks who can be PTBNL til June) that could be of interest to the Marlins. Plus, we may not even have to end up giving up all those guys. As I recall, we planned on giving up that type of package for Harden, and ended up giving up half of what I though we would. Chances are, there could be a Josh Donaldson in the package who hasnt even shown up our radar as a trade assset. What I like about our chances, as I have said before is while we dont have that 1 super star prospect, which most teams often wouldnt want to move anyway, we have enough expendable, major league ready players that a team like the Padres could use as building blocks. Pie, Marshall, Ceda, and Theriot/Fontenot/Cedeno should be very enticing to them. Im skeptical that theyd want Ronny however. He hasnt had much success hitting at Wrigley, and PetCo is a hell of a lot harder to hit in.
  21. Oh god...is this actually possible? I'm finally starting to believe that there is actually a realistic chance of this happening. I don't like how they (according to Rosenthal, anyways) would rather keep Dempster and Let Wood walk. If we got Peavy I'd say Wood would be 43324x more necessary than Dempster. I'm worried about the bullpen as it is. IF the Cubs get Peavy, I want no part of resigning Dempster. Let him walk, take the picks, and bring back Woody. Agreed. While Peavy, Z, harden, Dempster, Lilly would be a legendary rotation, the pen would be shaky at best, and Id rather bring back Wood to solidify it, plus maybe grab a lefty bat. With Peavy, Z, Harden, Lilly as 1-4, Marquis would be a sufficient #5, or who knows, maybe Rich Hill can pull himself up.
  22. Zambrano Peavy Harden Dempster Lilly Is this even fair? I guess when choosing betwen Demp and Wood, it comes down to would we rather have a legendary rotation and a shakey bullpen or an awesome rotation and a solid bullpen.
