  1. I don't fear the Mets, and Cespedes doesn't change that by much. And The Giants didn't do much more than we did. So there's that.
  2. At least we know who we'll be obsessing over next winter.

  4. tisk tisk derwood is going to hate seeing this D'Oh, I am so sorry! What can I do to get back on the good graces of Derwood? Discover a long lost Malkmus side project?
  5. What pretty much everyone here needs is to go into a deep sleep for about an hour.
  6. If Ross is a still a Padre in about an hour, will he be next Winter's Jake Peavy?
  7. But he makes up for his lack of talent with clubhouse something something.
  8. We've approached the trade deadline in a mostly rational and practical manner for the past 3 years. Time to do something erratic.
  9. Call me crazy, but this could hypothetically be a precursor to using Hendricks as part of the mythical 3 team mega-deal.
  10. I have no problem with this if it is not our only move.
  11. Christ, 5/35MM and the ink's barely dry for a guy who could be playing in Japan in two years. With this in mind, Castro and Edwards for Ross, Kimbrel, Gyorko and his awful contract. Who says no?
  12. Padres have more pieces and more suitors. They have contenders and non-contenders alike knocking on the door. Can't blame them for taking it too the wire. If the Twins and Cubs don't do anything I'll be shocked. The White Sox are the team that should stand pat. Too close to sell, too far to buy.
  13. Tons of teams have kicked the Cubs' ass repeatedly for a long time because we root for a team that has been garbage for most of our lifetimes and beyond. It's haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaack. but when you can't deny that it's different when your chief rival has been one of the most successful teams in baseball for the past 10 years, it's kind of taxing. Truthfully, I'd rather listen to Cardinals fans, who actually have something to hang their hat on, run their mouth than Brewers fans act as though we share some imaginary , storied rivalry.
  14. The thing that would annoy me is standing pat and Theo going on the radio and preaching patience and how he doesn't want to mortgage the long term prospects and how there has to be a balance between short term and long term etc. for the millionth time Someone should throw a pie in his face if he says that. Hopefully he'll get a deal done. If he doesn't I will wonder if money played a huge role in their decision. PTR will be PTR until he's not. And it made sense when we were laying the ground. But now that we have our cornerstones and much of the foundation, it's time to add to it. And I don't know if we'll be able to hang with the Dodgers, Yanks, Red Sox, etc. in the bidding for the big time free agents. This is exactly when we should be striking. And Ross or Carrasco would be exactly what we need; not meccessarily an ace, but a great #2/awesome #3.
  15. Let me go on record as saying that if we miss out on Carrasco and/or Ross to someone who offers the equivalent of McKinney, Contreras, and Stinnett, I will lose my ever loving mind and do the forehead injection thing. And I still don't get that reference. And if I claim consolation in the fact that we didn't "overpay," it will be a big, fat lie.
  16. [expletive] off Red Sox. Can you for once act like you're not in contention?
  17. Anyone else remember the days when if you wanted to track the deadline deals, you had to carefully read the reports scrolling at the bottom of the screen on ESPN?
  18. If we're picking up $1.5MM, I can't imagine the minor leaguer being anything more than a Rule 5 bait or AAA spare part.
  19. Wouldn't bead if he cost us Javy? I wouldn't be mad if Andrew Cashner cost us Javy. I'd jump up and down like a 12 year old girl who just scored Justin Bieber tickets if Carrasco cost us Javy.
  20. Kimbrel would have been nice. But as long as it doesn't necessarily mean that we're out on Ross too, I'm ok with it. But I'd happily take Carrasco instead. Hunter would be a nice addition to the bullpen. And perhaps if he we're a Cub, I'd finally stop confusing him with Tommy Hanson.
  21. I was under the impression that the Padres were desperately trying to dump salary after last winters uncharacteristic splurge.
  22. Wasn't this basically the same exact thing said about the Cubs and Padres as well? Yes. And with the clock ticking down, I have to wonder if this is last minute smokescreen to get us to offer up Baez, who they seem to really want. The wanting a CF thing stands out as strange. They're not going anywhere this year, and for now, they have Veneble and Bad Upton until Myers is back. Doesn't make sense for them to give up major trade chips for one.
  23. I mean, it's a semantical nitpick, but Ross and Upton are a pair of 3+ win players, and Ross is controlled for several years. It'd take a decent size quality and quantity from the Cubs to get them. That seems pretty 'big' to me. That said, I'd prefer Ross/Kimbrel to Ross/Upton, myself. Holy crap, that guy thinks Ross and Upton wouldn't be big? It would be substantial, sure. But in the context of some kind of brewing blockbuster no, I don't think it's close. Even if you don't believe Ross' elbow is a grenade with the pin pulled, he's a mid-rotation starter, not a #1 or even a #2. And Upton, while he's not as bad as he has been the last two months (which is almost Castro bad) he's not an elite bat. He's also a rental - exactly the sort of player Theo said he wasn't going to pay big for. This isn't the sort of big deal you'd even consider including Baez in. You're probably thinking of Ross Ohlendorf and Melvin Upton. No, I don't think I'd give up Javy for those two guys. But Tyson Ross and Justin Upton are good. And I'd drive Javy and 3 of his closest friends to the airport myself if we could get them.
