Tonight, Mark DeRosa and Kerry Wood can help the Cobs climb to 2 games out of 1st place. Meanwhile Carl Pavanos coming off his best start since 2004 when he was still relevant.

The only players we could probably aquire at this point are guys who may or may not be upgrades over what we have. The Ronnie Belliards, Wilson Betemits, and Rich Aurilias of the world are all OPSing in like the .500s. Thats not to say that if we could get any of them for 1 of our late 20's AAAAers or or a PTBNL I wouldnt be interested in at least an experiment. Worst that could happen is they give us what Miles, Freel, and Blanco are giving us now and we give up a guy who we dont have any future plans for.

What happened to that scar tissue that supposedly broke away that made him all better? I'd like to see them DL him, but I'm not convinced it's health that is making him struggle. He's looked gimpy throughout his time on the Cubs. Even when he is rolling he appears one misstep away from snapping those skinny legs. Even if they dont DL him, he still could use a game off here and there. Yesterday would have been a good time with the off day today, and you know they wont sit him suring the Sox series.

Likewise. I did not anticipate that. I was thinking the same thing. Id heard the name many times before, but every time I thought of him, I always pictured Von Hayes in my head, more specfically a 1983(I think) Donruss Von Hayes card I used to have.

The other teams in the division aren't drastically underperforming, though. The Cubs are the most likely team to break out of the doldrums at any point, so the fact that the Cards and Brewers are allowing us to hang in when we've been so bad is only good news for us. They're not likely to be much better than they've been to this point, while the Cubs are likely to be much better. The longer we hang around in the division while playing poorly, the better our outlook for the stretch run gets. True, but The Brewers have been getting some bad hitting from pretty much everyone but Braun and Fielder lately, and you can argue that any one or more of Hart, Hardy, Cameron, and Hall are due to breakout and day now. Also, the Cards and Brewers both have the freedom to make a trade in a few weeks, which due to bad planning, we can not unless we want to settle on a slight upgrade.

The keys are Soriano and Bradley. If they can get their groove back things would be much better. Soto and Fukudome need to get more consistent. I'm not sure where you're going to get a bat to replace Miles. I suggested a while ago going after Freddy Sanchez or Jorge Cantu to fill in at 3B and then slide over to 2B when Ramirez returned, but many posters shot down the idea. We were saving our prospects to get Peavy, but now that he's injured we ought to use some of them for offense. The dumpster.

Everyone keeps talking about being only 2.5 games back. This isnt a reflection on the Cubs playing well, rather the poor play of the teams around us. We are capable of pulling it together and being in first as early as soon as the ASB if not sooner, but at the same time, if the Cubs keep playing as poorly as they are, The Brewers and/or Cards are 1 hot streak away sinking us to 10 back in that same time frame. The rest of the division has allowed the Cubs to keep their destiny in their own hands, and its up to them to make the most of it.

Soriano has been the same player his entire career. I don't see why you think pitchers all of the sudden figured him out in his 11th season. That was somewhat of a tongue in cheek comment. But seriosuly, this cold streak has been beyond brutal. That's because it is compounded with his injury. Which is why he shouldnt be playing in every single game. I know the offense is struggling as of now, but the guy needs a break here and there.

Soriano should not be hitting leadoff until he pulls it together. Weve all heard the story about Soriano and his hot and cold streaks and as Len says almost every time he strikes out on 3 bad pitches that when hes hot, he can carry the team on his back for weeks at a time. Well this is ridiculous. This cold streak has lasted for over a month now. Its not a case of a slump or a cold streak, its a case of pitchers figuring him out. Thats right, theyve figured out that if they throw him bad pitches he'll swing at them. We dont have that typical leadoff hitter, so Id plug Theriot in that spot for now. Maybe Kosuke can be moved to the 2 spot. Say what you will, but he really seems to be moving back toward his 2008 form. Lee, Bradley, Soto is the closest thing to a heart of a lineup that we have, so you may as well keep them there, and put Soriano at 6th with Fontenot at 7th. We really have nothing to work with for the 8 spot unless Hoffpauir or Reed miraculously learn to play 2nd or 3rd, so between Miles, Blanco, and Freel when he returns, sometimes you just have to pick your poison. Maybe even take the LaRussa rout and plug one of those gus in at 9 and bat the pitcher 8th.

...it's not Marmol. Marmol is still by far our most unhittable reliever on the team. Agreed. Its hard to hit a ball thats nowhere near the plate. Rich Hill, who at one point was projected to be our #2 or 3 starter for years to come was sent down for walking less guys than Carlos. Im not saying Carlos is bad. When he finds the plate, hes one of the most unhittable pitchers in the league. He just needs to find that K zone consistantly one way or another.

Knock it off ! C'mon Fred it would be for the betterment of the team. We will not be advocating death or injury on this board to any person. If people are going to break this rule, there will be suspensions handed out. What if it doesnt actually hit him, and it just comes close enough to scare him out of chicago?

Edit: I wish no harm on Aaron Miles, but it would make me very happy if he were to play for another baseball team.

I say make em anyway. Even if we put 10 on the board today, I refuse to believe that i will lead to any kind of consistancy. Any team can put a good game togethr here and there, even a winning streak, but it does not a contender make.
