  1. I like how that article says JJ Hardy could be available in the right deal. Its like the Cubs saying Fontanot could be available if thats what it took to get Halladay. Jays want top prospects, not a guy wose going to be arb eligible next year. If the Brewers really want Halladay, they need to stop talking Gamel OR Escobar, its going to be an AND, plus Parra.
  2. Our pitching hasnt been a problem, its the offense. Yeah, they pounded the Nats for 26 runs in 4 games, but aside from Lannan, these are awful pitchers. We'll see what happens in Philly vs. decent, but not great starting pitchers. I think he was responding to the comment that the Nationals are just a AAA team. The pitching staff isn't good, but they have a very good offense. I know, and out starters have been holding offenses down all season, its our offense hitting thats been the main issue. The question is, did they get lucky vs. bad pitching, or are they starting to heat up? Either way, its good to build momentum going into a series vs. one of the better offenses in the league.
  3. Now that Fonts starting to hit, and we dont have enough of a sample to decide on Baker, I cant imagine the Cubs would have made any kind of play at Lopez at this time. However, if Font goes back to what hes done most of the season, Baker keeps doing what hes doing, and Aaron Miles continues to exist, there will be a lot of why the hell didnt we go after Lopez talk. Looking at that return for the D Backs, it couldnt have been too hard to match it.
  4. Those weren't offers, those were insults. Sanchez's $10 million for two years, when his certain to vest option for next year alone is $8 million. I'd like to hear how the convo with Sanhez and his agent went. "Guess what? The Pirates are offering you an extension" "An extension with the Pirates? Not interested" "But it's for TEN MILLION DOLLARS" Sanchez to agent: "So let me get this straight, not only am I asked to take a pay cut, but Id also spend 2 more years on the pirates? Where do I sign up? Just kidding, your fired."

  6. http://chicago.cubs.mlb.com/images/gameday/mugshots/mlb/150438.jpg Is it me, or does Lopez look like he came over for a hot date with a 8th grader, but wound up with Dateline NBCs Chris Hanson?
  7. I hear you, It is hard not to get excited about a 4 game road sweep even if it is against the worst team in the modern era of the game. Even if we take 1 of 3 from the Phillies, its still a 5-2 road trip.
  8. A few other transactions for the day: Twins sign Mark Gridzielanak to a minor league deal Orioles land Padres setup man Cla Meredith, who the Cubs at one point had their eye on for 31 year old journeyman-utilityman Oscar Salazar.
  9. Because hes on a bad, small market team. Look as Ray Halladay. Easilt one of the top 3 pitchers in the game, but the only reason he gets any fn fair is because of trade talks.
  10. Looks like we may have put the nail in Julian Tavarezes coffin.
  11. I wonder if this spells the end of Bill Hall. Someone has to go, and McGhee and Counsell have been great thi year.
  12. Maybe after half a season of suckage comes half a season of awesomeness Half a season plus a month. If Fontenot, Soriano, and Fukudome can do what they did this weekend against major league pitching, we could be on.
  13. it'd be really nice if joel pineiro remembers that he's joel pineiro. this would also be a nice time for ryan franklin to remember that he's ryan franklin. Ryan Franklin....................................on steroids. There could well be something up with some of these guys, if not roids, then HGH. Im not going to question guys like Wainwright and Carpenter, but can even Dave Duncan take guys like Franklin and Piniero who have made a career out of mediocrity and make stars out of them?
  14. Its been a while since weve had this kind of inning. Good old Julian Tavarez.
  15. Not sure if the offense is coming to life or its just the worst pitching and defense on earth at work, but I'll take it.
  16. So isn this the guy who can carry the team on his back for weeks at a time? We can only hope.
  17. Or maybe its just the opposite.
  18. Just a routine off day for Ramirez I hope?
  19. Intersting post Cubs'nClippers1, or should I say...Alfonso Soriano.
  20. Its good to see Fontenot with a few good games. We could really use him if he decides he wants to start hitting.
  21. fire up the chris carpenter bandwagon. i'm officially on board. by the way, daytona pitchers struck out 17 batters tonight! jay jax is probably done - 5 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 4 BB, 7 K, 2 HR, 5 GO/1 FO Archer wasnt bad either. in 5 IP, he gave up 3 runs, 2 earned with 5 Ks. Justin Berg, who Im starting to pay attention to went 2 IP giving up just a BB, and Blake Parker also gave up just a BB in his inning. The I Cubs are tied 1-1 after 9. Pretty good pitching day overall.
  22. No, I wasnt at all thinking about Wil freaking Nieves hitting his first and as far as I know only career home run, I believe it was a walk off against us last year.
  23. We really needed that easy 9th after the 8th. If only we could only play the Pirates, Indians, and Nationals, wed be in good shape.
  24. I can understand not wanting Sam Fuld as a full time player or not believing he is for real, but hes done anything to warrant anyones hatred. Maybe hes not the answer, but in his short time with the team, hes done what he was supposed to do and then some. I say ride Sam until the tires fall off. if hes the next Podsednik, thats something we can really use. If hes just another late 20's AAAAer, it cant hurt to have tried considering the production weve been getting from the 3 stooges in the outfield.
  25. I cant help but notice the lack of a 7/18 game thread.
