  1. If this trade does go down, we'll be giving up a hell of a lot more than Hak Ju Lee and Robinson Chirinos judging by the way that both Hendry and the Rays GM are playing their hands.
  2. Sometimes it isnt even about the money. Sometimes they just arent ready to hang up their cleats and they want to keep playing. Granted, they want to win, but not everyone can sign with the Yankees, Red Sox, or Phillies. At Lees age, it isnt about building your market value. At Lees age, he knows he'll never be seeing another 3-4 year deal, or even a 2 and will be lucky to get a few more 1 year deals after this one. As for Baltimore, a team with an awful pitching staff and virtually now chance to compete, the aquisitions of Lee, JJ Hardy, and Mary Reynolds are eye poppingly strange, but more power to them.
  3. How is Harden a head case? Guys that get hurt are [expletive] It has nothing to do with the injury thing. Ever met him? He's the kind of guy my grandmother would have called a space cadet. What in the blue [expletive] are you talking about It was probably some other canadian. they all kind of look alike.
  4. Its a 1 year deal, and the Nats immediately offered LaRoche a 2 year deal. Looks like Derreks weak 2010 put him in the same position as Jermaine Dye did after '09, the difference being Derrek accepted a 1 year deal.
  5. I was reading an SI a few months ago, and apparently he suffers from baseballs newest "injury", the social anxiety disorder along with Greinke, Willis, and yes, Milton Bradley, along with a handfull of less notable players, mostly pitchers.
  6. -Ben Sheets -Justin Ducherer -Chris Young -Chris Capuano -John Maine at full health, this woukld be a solid big league rotation potential minor league invitees -Dontrelle Willis -Ian Snell -Brian Bannister Any interest?
  7. they do???? Potentially, I suppose. If Wood stays healthy and pitches like he did for the Yankees, it will be strong. If Guzman can pitch, it could be great. Having Grabow pitch decently would go a long way as well. That's a lot of if, though. It all depends on the ifs Marmol and Marshall can have repeats of 2010 Guz and Wood both stay healthy even Grabow and Caridad should be some solid arms for the front of the pen
  8. I wonder what they're discussing. Perhaps the latest Bears game, because really, theres 0 reason for him to be a 2012 Cub.
  9. I suspect that Tyler Colvin will also find himself starting a few games at 1st. Unless the Cubs have some money set aside for Prince Fielder, more than likely, the 2012 and beyond 1st base candidates will be Pena, Colvin, or 2012s version of Lyle Overbay or Nick Johnson. We really have 0 1st base prospects unless you consider 43 year old Blake Lalli a prospect, or perhaps Rebel Ridling, Jake Optiz, or Justin Bour who are sure to be in the same position as Lalli in a few years.
  10. Personally, I remember thinking it was the greatest thing ever. We plugged an elite shortstop into a lineup already boasting Sammy Sosa, Moises Alou, Aramis Ramirez, Derrek Lee, and young Corey Patterson and Michael Barrett, not to mention a steller starting rotation, so how could we lose? I was never a fan of Francis Beltran or Gonzo, and didnt have an opinion of Brendan Harris, who eventually proved himself to be a Ryan Theriot clone. Id heard about Justin Jones, but at the time, in my mind minor leaguers were basically currency, besides, we had Woody, Prior, Zambrano, and Clement, with Angel Guzman waiting in the wings, and I had my eye on a kid named Rickey Nollasco, so we wouldnt be needing a starter anytime soon anyway. I also remember a romored 3 way deal before the Nomar trade that would have sent Orlando Cabrera to the Cubs and Randy Johnson would be invloved, but I forget which team hed have ended up with, but it wasnt the Cubs. Yup, the good old days.
  11. I wasnt around here at the time, but just out of curiosity, how did people feel about trading Justin Jones for the remains of Nomar Garciaparra?
  12. According to this article from Dec 22, Hendry is still gunning hard for Garza, and kicking the tires on Carmona. The Rays are apparently interested in Hak Ju Lee and Robinson Chirinos but not Vitters. http://chicagocubsonline.com/archives/2010/12/cubsrumor122210.php
  13. Minor league deal, but better than nothing.
  14. A rotation of Z, Dempster, Silva, Wells, and Gorz isnt awe inspiring, but it isnt awful, plus, ideally, wed have Cashner, Jackson, Carpenter, and maybe Diamond waiting in the wings, although they'll probably be idiots and waste Cashner in middle relief, and who knows, something may click and Samardzjia will suddenly be good at baseball.
  15. He helped rid us of Aaron Miles, and for that, we are eternally greateful.
  16. Apparently, we signed some guy named Polin Trinidad.
  17. I hear Joe Morgans looking for work.
  18. If the Rangers are at all desperate we will probably lose this. Actually, my fear is that we'll be the desperate ones and Hendry will do something awful.
  19. I was kind of hoping that somebody really weird and random would have made it like Tom Goodwin or Paul Assenmacher.
  20. Looking over the division again, this move may very well make the Brewers division favorites. Depending how you feel about the Reds rotation anyway. Aside from Carpenter, Wainwrite, Pujols, and Holliday, St. Louis is downright bad, and if they lose any one of those 4 guys for any length of time, there in trouble, unless their gritty new shortstop can save the day. The way I see it, if the Cubs were to aquire one more front-mid rotation starter somehow, that could put them right back in the hunt. As we recall, hendry claimed that he needed 3-4 decent moves to put us back into contention, and IMHO, he made 2 of them. This could mean re-exploring a Garza trade or taking a gamble on Webb, or even Sheets whose name I havnt even heard all off season, but I guess there must be a reason for that. Pavano would be an option, but lack of options will probsbly make him very expensive.
  21. I don't know how he's throwing (I don't think he's pitching in any Winter leagues this year), but he is a non-roster invitee to spring training. Link If Guzman can come back anywhere near 09 form, we might have one of the best bullpens in baseball. I'm not sure exactly how big that "if" is, but I don't think it's small. Love to be wrong, though... Its not like Woods a sure thing either.
  22. I wonder why the Cubs dont seem to have any interest in Fausto. Hed be less risky than Webb, and if he gets to full health, has a higher upside than Garza. I dont know what it would take to get him, but if Cleveland would take a Colvin-centric package for him, it would be a risk Id be more than willing to take.
  23. Thats what I envy about Brewer fans. They dont think World Series, they just want to be good. 2008 was a huge success in their minds, and while we were better tht year, we chalk it up as another big let down. If they make the playoffs this year, they'll consider it a success. Between Sabbathis, Marcum, and now Greinke, over the past 3 years, the Brewers have probably mortgaged their future more than any other team in baseball, and they cant possible retain Fielder after 2011 or Greinke after 2012. No, but then they can restock the farm once they trade away Fielder and Grienke, and the whole process starts over again. Theres no guarantee that they'll be able to pull out another Fielder, Braun, Gallardo, Weeks, etc. Besides, at this point, I dobt they trade Fielder and he likely walsk after this year.

  25. For the next 2-3 years, it looks like the Cards, Reds, and Brewers will have the NL Central, but that could change very quickly. Guys like Carpenter, Wainwright, Braun, Fielder, Greinke and maybe Pujols could find new homes in the next few years, and the Cubs have something that none of these teams seemingly have anymore, and thats a solid farm system.
