  1. No benefit. Even if he were booted all the way down to non-mop up middle relief, theres the chance that we could end up with something of some value, or else packaged. As Tim said, the velocity's there so someone should be willing to fork over a lottery ticket or two in hopes that their pitching coaches can cure what's beenailing him on and off for the past 3-4 years. I'd prefer take that chance over dumping him to appease the angry mobs and bring up one of the guys who werent very good in Spring Training or the early goings of the AAA season.
  2. If he were broken, he probably wouldn't be averaging 94 on his fastball. I guess broken wasn't quite the term I was looking for. What's that word again? Oh, yeah. Bad.
  3. Is it safe to say that Carlos Marmol could possibly be broken?
  4. Good thing we didn't give up Rich Hill or Felix Pie for him.
  5. Well, yeah, DFA is a stupid option right now; I'm just saying the way it played out didn't really fill me with much confidence. I'd love it if the latter half of the the PA's lead to him righting the ship. I'd have to assume that a demotion to set up and then middle relief would be long before DFA. Even at this point they could probably get a few bucks salary relief and a fringe prospect or 2 in trade. But as I've said about Marmol the past few years, when he was lights out, he missed the zone like 70% of the time, but his stuff was so nasty that batters swung anyway. "Effectively wild" as they say. Once hitters and coaches caught on to that, they began laying off. As a result, at bats became longer, driving up his pitch counts, which could have had to do with his decreased velocity. That forced his hand to start throwing more strikes, making him far more hittable.
  6. It's not the ultimate authority but MiLB.com lists Cardenas as a free agent. Cardenas became a minor league free agent at the start of the offseason. Nobody picked him up. Surely somebody will give him another minor league deal.
  7. Maybe I'm just well out of the loop here, but do we know why Josh Vitters has sat out both of the first two games?
  8. Marmol is likely the closer because the FO wants him to create some semblance of trade value and feels it has little to lose...I doubt Sveum actually wants to run him out there in those situations. if Fujikawa were given the closers job and Marmol could shine in the set up role, would he really lose much trade value? Most contenders already have a closer and when looking for pen help are more in the market for 7-8 inning guys anyway.
  9. Wow. That really surprises me. Not sure why we didn't just 60 day him.
  10. I think it started earlier than that, but it seems about right. Is there an official range for the steroid era? I'd guess Late '80s w/ Conseco and McGwire were its earliest stars. the beginning of the steroid era is whenever hank aaron started snorting deer semen or w/e so he could break the hr record There have been various types of PEDs since te Olympic Games in Ancient Greece, and steroids since the 30s-40s. There are records of the Nazis using anabolic steroids to increase the strength and agression of their "super soldiers." My point is, who knows which of the heroes of the days of yore. Roger Maris for one strikes me as a guy who could very well have been on some brand of juice. His monster 1961 season in no way reflects the bulk of his career which included 2 other 30+ HR seasons which sandwiched '61.
  11. Eh, I figure it will be all variations of Jason Berken and Miguel Socolovich for the next few months.
  12. Which is why it has me wondering if they still have plans to trade Soriano in the near future. Either way, this is the type of low risk move I love, certainly more than scraping middle relievers and utility infielders off the sidewalk for depth. And how is he only 28? He's like the 43 year woman on her 9th 35th birthday.
  13. Cabrera in Tennessee is indeed a surprise to me. It almost looks as though Iowa is fully stocked with spare parts for the big league club aside from Vitters, Jackson, and maybe Watkins; who I'd personally have likes to see get a look at 2nd on the big league club while Barney's out. The only other exception is Loux, who I expect is only there to keep a spot warm before he ultimately ends up in Kane County. One more man without a country is Dallas Beeler. Was he injured?
  14. A few more guys I can't help but notice are not on any roster; Marcus Hatley, Carlos Guitierrez (guy we claimed from the Twins) Greg Rohan (filler, but at least he was our filler).
  15. Who the hell is Tim Torres?
  16. So how many more gems does Shark spin before they get more aggressive in pursuing an extension? I know there was some chatter about it in the offseason, but nothing substantial. Another 2 seasons like 2012 will make him incredibly expensive, and if today is any indication, it's looking like that's a distinct possibility. Had it not been for that 1st inning error, he may well have pitched a complete game, or at least come out to start the 9th.
  17. Never like the guys with the celebration antics unless its our guy.
  18. Just as nerve racking as opening day 2012, but with a happy ending. I'll take it. Maybe Dale can cut out the weeks of Marmol is our closer posturing and make the switch sooner than later.
  19. Marmol aimlessly whipping baseballs in general direction of home plate as per usual.
  20. Love: Shark Like: 1-5 OK with: 6 spot Could do without: 7-8 spots
  21. He's like Ryan Theriot without the fans that think he's good.
  22. The Brenley kid.
