  1. I know Kyler Burke isn't age appropriate for Daytona, but is he someone to keep an eye on for a big league bullpen spot? Even though he's a little older, there is not much mileage on his arm. I always thought so. I've heard mid-to-high 90s with a good breaking ball....when out of the pen. I've alwaysfigured he was starting to get the innings under his belt. But his calling could be as a late inning reliever. I wouldn't be completely surprised if he moved to AA at some point this season and got a Sept callup. Wouldn't the age factor not apply as much when dealing with a major position change? Seems like he's been here for ages, but he's only been pitching for a year and a half.
  2. I actually find it somewhat impressive that Candelerio made the not so hot list. These things are reserved for notable prospects. While Cubs fans have been taking notice of him, I didn't realize he was the type to earn mainstream (as far as low level prospects go) attention of any kind. And what's not to like about the 19 year old hitting machine tag from a top analyst.
  3. Looks like Doug Melvin forgot about pitching and decided to go back to the old Brewers philosophy of let (a few of) the bats do all the talking and who cares if anyone can throw or catch the ball.
  4. It's a good thing the Cubs are so far behind that it's hard to get hopes up, because you and Kyle are trying to mess with us. But more importantly, the Cubs were a lot more talented and the rest of the division was a lot less good. In 2007 we were looking up at less talented teams. This year we're looking up at 2, maybe 3 legitately talented teams. Regardless of how much better we are than our record suggests, the damage is done. Luckily, we no longer have a GM who thinks we have a chance and give up prospects for slight upgrades.
  5. What are the scouting reports on Rosscup? Any chance he's promoted in the near future? He's logged a good 45 innings at AA.
  6. 25 years old Plays 3rd base Nice power Not so nice OBP Sure, why the heck not. Because Valbuena, Ransom, Vitters, and Stewart are all better or comparable and hogging all the playing time in our upper levels. Francisco is redundant in the Cubs system. And like Kyle said, his K and BB rates are dog [expletive], and have been his entire career. Agreed on Valbuena. If he were a righty, I'd be interested in bringing him in to replace Ransom, who's over ten years older. I really don't know what to expect from Vitters, and as for Stewart, I'm still convinced that he's still here only because the Cubs aren't willing to gut his salary and he isn't willing to walk away from it and he'll be in Iowa until one side changes their mind.
  7. Any reason that Wood was lifted when he was? 6 IP, 88 pitches, 7-2 lead. Responsible for 4 of those runs. Doesn't strike me as a logical point to pull him.
  8. Cubs with 15 runs over the past game and a half. 10 are courtesy of Dioner Navarro and Travis Wood
  9. 25 years old Plays 3rd base Nice power Not so nice OBP Sure, why the heck not.
  10. Time to finally take the BP Crosstown Cup. And fill it with ice. And urinate in it.
  11. That's a strange and random move. Hector Rondon with another notch on the Rule 5 belt.
  12. Camera sure did a good job making that look like a lot more than it was.
  13. Is it me, or to the relevant prospects on the Smokies; Szczur, Alcantara, Torreyes, Villanueva, and Ha never seem to get hot more than 1 at a time?
  14. Yes, Cabrera was the first (and only) name I thought of while looking at Kyle's list. Rosscup has a decent shot if he can stay healthy for a full year. I'm wondering how Hendricks stuff would play in the pen. Could he add a couple ticks to the fastball to make it playable at an MLB level? If so, he seems to have the complementary pieces and the command to at least be replacement level in the pen. But this is why I'm really disappointed with the seasons that Hatley, Zych, Batista, McNutt & Rhoderick are having. I had some level of hope that we'd get a breakout or two from that group in the pen. Del Valle? He seems to be striking more guys out. Walking his share too though.
  15. Is there any confirmation at this point that Gerardo Concepcion is still something that exists, or was it an elaborate hoax to reel in Soler?
  16. It's not. Having expensive veteran bullpen arms under long-term contract can be a bad thing. But having MLB pitchers and minor leagues who project to be MLB pitchers under *team control* for several more years is a very good thing. But we don't. Which is why they pounce on every relief pitcher under 30 with at least 1 arm frimly attached to his body that passes through the waiver wire. Personally, I'd rather cycle through these guys and hope for more Kevin Gregg's to pop up and James Russell's to emerge from the system than offer up big money to another round of Howrys, Eyres, and Grabows.
  17. This leaves Daytona with just 23 players, 12 pitchers (7 relievers plus Cates/Wells/Burke/Francescon/Kirk), and 11 hitters. There will likely be a couple more bodies heading to Daytona soon. So Larry Suarez pitched for Daytona (up from EXST) last night, so there's your pitcher. And I thought I read Yaniel Cabezas was sent up to Daytona as well (giving them 3 catchers with Krist and Davis). Raisin - you know better than me, whats our obsession with having 3 catchers on a minor league team? AA has 3 catchers now too, and for a while, so did KC (Contreras, Escobar, and Cabezas). No idea. At least in KC and Daytona, you have a DH too. With little knowledge of any of these guys other than Contreres, could it be that they don't care so much about the catchers as prospects so much as they're having them follow relevant pitching prospects who have had success with them at other levels?
  18. what? it's another year of not developing. this means that he's unlikely to play any kind of significant role on the big league team until at least 2015. It's not impossible that he could go the Wainwright route and close mid 2014 and then stretch into a starter for 2015 and beyonf if they feel he's physically able. From what I understand, development isn't so much the issue for him as health.
  19. He's still 22 and under team control until 2018. Wasn't expecting anything from him this season anyway.
  20. Figured this to be a good spot for this
  21. While few may rival Bryce Harper's talent, one quasi-prospect has claimed his Douche-Crown; FWIW, I'd still have rather drafted him over Hayden Simpson.
  22. E Jax is due. Right? And Sale's coming off a missed start due shoulder discomfort, so I'll have to assume that even the most incompetent manager would have him on a leash.
  23. Hawk is awesome to listen to when the Sox are losing But perhaps the most beautiful sound in all of sports is the abrubt silence that falls upon Hawk when someone hits a walk off vs. The Sox mid sentence.
  24. On Garza: yeah, he's 30. Yeah, he's had his DL stints. This being said, 25-28 year old front end starters aren't exactly falling from trees. Young top players are getting locked up through their prime more and more, and as a result guys like Edwin Jackson, B.J. Upton, and Kyle Lohse are what's passing for top free agents. I say we extend Garza; 5 years tops, maybe a vesting option or two. Front load if possible. On Shark; yeah, he'd probably net us quite the prospect package, but even then, they're such a crap shoot. Shark's looking more and more like a sure thing every day, so I'd just as soon hang on to him, unless somebody with a strong farm system is willing to go out of their mind. If not, he's just what we need going forward.
  25. I'm not 100% sure but I think so. Pretty sure we said no/demanded another player or something. As I recall, Brown was in the discussion, but I don't think there was ever confirmation as to the extent. There was a report by a Phillies executive that they'd made a "generous offer" and we turned it down.
