    Longtime cubs beat writer for suntimes then nbc Chicago. He was criticized by a lot of cubs fans for negativity, but to be fair, he covered the cubs in an era with a lot of negativity.

    Yeah, Kmet was the leader in the clubhouse in terms of extension talks. Not a surprise. Dollar figure might be, but $12.5 m per is a step down from the top guys in the 15-17 range. Very fortunate timing for Kmet. Hopefully he really steps up this season

    For the past couple years, neighbors down the shore blow an airhorn whenever Phillies hit a homerun. Now they do it whenever they score. They just scored 2 in the 9th to beat the Orioles. It’s rather annoying, but at least justifiable when they come back and win in walkoff fashion.

    Unless the injury coincides with an excellent season while healthy otherwise, I think both of these scenarios at least give you clarity in knowing you cannot count on Fields to be the guy. You’d have to at least look into bringing in competition for the starting job on 2024 and at least be prepared to move on after that season. this past years results left a lot of questions unanswered, but the extenuating circumstances that existed this year won’t exist next year. 2022: The GM tanked. The system was new. The line was unaddressed. The skill positions were bottom of barrel. 2023: They aren’t tanking, at least in terms of trying to score. It’s the second season with the offense. The line has been addressed with free agent and first round talent. The skill positions have been thoroughly, if not massively, upgraded. If Fields doesn’t improve markedly, he’s a prob

    But the same people that made this pick would be making that pick. So if you don’t like it, you can’t have confidence that they’ll do better next time. It makes a lot more sense to be happy that they used all their money and signed everybody than to value a pick next year that would have to go to a guy that is worth less

    I feel safe in thinking we’ll have a lot more answers after this season. If he regresses he’s done. If he duplicates last year, it’s a huge disappointment and we have to start planning for the next guy, even if he might go into 2024 as the de facto starter. If he gets injured and misses a lot of time, you have to believe his style of play isn’t long for the league and you have to start planning for the next guy. If he improves a little, you can consider picking up his option, but also keep your options open in the next couple drafts. If he takes a leap, he’s the guy. (But you can afford to regularly spend later round picks on potential backups)
