The fact is they didn't spend for half a decade and only started spending a lot two years ago. Those are just facts and it doesn't matter if you agree or not. They spent on free agency in 2015 but that doesn't mean they had a particularly high payroll. I don't believe they have a good reason to not spend on Harper this offseason, but they want us to believe they do.

How? They've been owners for 9 seasons and started off with huge tank with the promise of spending a hell of a lot more later to win a lot and often. We lived through that time and still lined their pockets. They don't get a free pass for the tank if they suddenly can't afford top free agents (let alone relievers, per most recent reports).

What? You are babbling. It's paying off for the Ricketts, they are making money hand over fist. They won one world series. They've barely crossed over the .500 level as an ownership group.

The Cubs are 733-725 under the ownership of the Ricketts family, and average 81-79 per season. They've only been anywhere close to aggressive financially in 2 of 9 years. To have the audacity to claim that they've done all they can do in terms of payroll is [expletive] disgusting. They worked hard to suppress payroll for half a decade before even thinking about trying to win games. This is the first year they will flirt with the top of the payroll lists, after raking in tons of cash, and to get cold feet now is absolutely ridiculous. Apologizing for their belt tightening is pathetic.

Seriously, do people just ignore the fact that the Ricketts family led this team into the crapper, on purpose, for many years, to supposedly be able to provide a decade long string of successes? We went through the BS "debt servicing" years already. We went through the "woe is us I can't believe what state the tribune company left this team in" years. We lived through that crap with the promise of massive spending later. They can't back down from that now.

She's 1/5th of the group and supports some LGBTQ causes and still very much supports billionaire-centric policies. Also, doing charity is like the bare minimum rich people can do to not be awful. Every one of these guys has a cause they support for PR (and tax) purposes.

Most of us are! For the record, I want Bryce Harper, too. But let's just be grateful we all decided to be Cubs fans, because I imagine to small and mid market fans, we sound like some real spoiled bitches. A) I didn't decide to become a fan of a team. B) Oh yes, let's be grateful for the lifelong supply of joy and goodness that the Cubs have given us all. C) The Ricketts in particular very famously never presided over any losing seasons.

ooo ooo, I love these "reasonable doubt" posts that have nothing to do with anything. This entire discussion is based on the theory that the Cubs drastically cut their expected budget and are no longer going to spend on players this offseason, something that has been reported by dozens of people. I think it's all bunk, myself. Exactly, a theory. We'll see if it proves to be correct. None of us knows that answer, so let's see what happens. Like everyone else, I will be pissed if they don't spend money this offseason when they are in the middle of their window. What exactly is your point here? Are we not supposed to have a discussion until the final numbers are in? We can't talk about the offseason until the offseason concludes? We're talking about what has been reported, and the Cubs are very obviously pushing the narrative that they don't have any money.

One might argue, and current events would suggest, that when you have a bad argument there is a tremendous need to keep repeating false claims to make it sound better.

By definition any owner of the Cubs will be a billionaire, so nobody can defend the owners who have made the team as financially strong as they’ve ever been and as successful on the field as they’ve been in literally over a century? And, Harper still hasn’t signed elsewhere yet... You feel the need to "defend" a billionaire for watching the value of his assets increase?
