The "bad guys" are the idiot Yankees fans who villified ARod for every move he made (and then pretended they weren't blaming ARod), the idiot media who constantly hounded ARod, and the idiot Yankees insiders (including Joe Torre and Jeter) who fed the ARod feeding frenzy. I have repeatedly said that I am one Yankee fan that never boo'd A-Rod. I want anyone wearing my teams uni to suceed. But that doesn't mean I have to like the guy. I have admitted his greatness, but I was never a fan when he was in Seattle or Texas. His numbers speak for themselves, so does his salary. I simply want Payroll down and have said MANY times on here that he is not the reason the Yankees struggle in the post-season. There are several players that I would like elsewhere, some still current Yankees and some (THANKFULLY) former Yankees. Methinks thou doth protest too much. -
Here's a thought if the Cubs can't sign Fukodome. Hendry's supposedly been enamored with RF Shawn Green in the past. Green's stats against right-handed pitching in 2007 (approx. 360 plate appearances): .326 .383 .482 .865. Hendry can probably sign him to a 1 year deal for around $4M and let Murton play RF against left-handed pitching. Hoops That would be an incredibly depressing offseason. Green's numbers vs RH last year may be a bit flukish, he didn't hit that way in 2006. And it was basically just a few extra singles falling in, as he didn't hit for any power.

It seems to me that people want to adjust both pitchers and hitters numbers higher when moving from the AL to NL. I'm not sure why moving him to the NL will help at all. Perhaps getting out of Comerica will make his numbers look a little better. As for how that would matchup vs average middle infielders: Average NL 2b .272/.341/.418 Average NL SS .272/.336/.418 He'd be a SLG improvement, but a bigger OBP liability. It should be noted he does not hit much better vs left-handers. Career stats: .257/.301/.387 vs RHP .245/.290/.382 vs LHP

In what universe do you trade a starting outfielder for a utility player and then turn around and non tender the utility player? A strange and distant universe. The industry opinion on Jacque Jones would have to be so incredibly low that the best a team could get for him is the opportunity to non-tender a mediocre backup infielder.

Quite possibly. Although I can't see them going with Soriano, Pie and Murton, regardless of where Fukudome ends up.

NSBB is not one person with a singular opinion. I was one of the most anti-Jones people here, but I didn't want him gone "at any cost." This deal doesn't improve the team. It puts them in a slightly better financial position, but it may preclude them from improving the one position that had next to no hope of even looking average next year. I'm not sure you're ever going to be people happy to see another mediocre middle infielder acquired. I want actual good baseball players to play for the Cubs, enough so that the team can win 95-100 games and realistically contend for the world series. What I don't want is a GM who is given a ton of money to spend but only comes up with mediocrity, at best.

Why? because he has nothing left to prove at aaa anymore and he's probably going to put up better numbers than theriot with better defense. Ronny may never amount to anything, but at least he has a chance to be good. Theriot doesn't.

To a degree. It's a massive advantage to be able to outspend your mistakes. I agree that teams liek the Yanks, Sox, Mets, Dodgers, and Cubs can spend to cover up mistakes, but that does not bring in wins and causes more problems down the line. Hence the Yankees downslide into mediocrity. I agree they will be hard pressed to win 90 next year, but they have to pay for the mistakes of overspending on garbage and build themselves back up. They do have the system now to go out and make some trades to fill some minor holes. No, it does bring in wins. The only reason the Cubs went from 90 losses to 85 wins was money. The only reason the Yankees have stuck around at the elite level for so long is money. If you spend $90-100m, a couple mistakes can really affect you negatively. If you spend $200 million, you can withstand a lot more mistakes. It always cracks me up when Yankees fans try to lump themselves into the same group as LA, the Cubs and others. The Yankees are an entirely different concept than any other team in baseball. The Red Sox are similar, but significantly less well funded to make a difference. The next group doesn't even compare.

Don't kid yourself. It will always matter. As great as Tampa's young talent may be, NY and BOS will always be able to threaten the 95-100 win range with just a handful of moves. Money matters. It's the one advantage the Cubs have over the 5 NLC teams, and the one reason they might stay at or near the top of the division. New York's payroll is going to be massive in 2008, and unless they pull a rabbit out of the hat, they aren't going to win 90. Yes, from time to time a big money time will take a step back because they've overpaid for so long. However, the point is they will always be able to threaten the 95-100 win range with a couple moves. There's no need for magic. Just agree to overpay financially, and there will always be talent available for the taking.

Strangely enough, they've been pretty quiet for a while now. I think they sense the real end of the Yankees dynasty.

It does allow them to include sizable bonuses for "games finished", which is what I think teams give potential closers as bonuses.

I love how Yankees fans constantly say, I'm not blaming ARod, but it's ARod's fault. Craps me up everytime, and I've heard it thousands of times in the past few years. Needless to say, it's great to see we've got a Yankees fan on here spouting the company line about the current batch not "being a TEAM", how ARod isn't a true Yankee, etc, etc, etc.

Another matchup with the Blues tonight. A couple changes afoot, with Lalime getting the 2nd start in a row, Burish replacing Adams and Samsonov getting back on the ice. Havlat's still at least a few games away from playing.

This team does not need left handed bats, and just because Jacque had one year where he was actually not incompetent against LHP, doesn't mean he can handle LHP. This team needs bats, preferrably ones that get on base. Jacque doesn't get on base, and hurts the team. You don't think, that with 1 year left on the deal, he's an acceptable 4th OF? If you can't move him, or if you'd have to pay somebody else to take him, sure, he's an acceptable 4th OF. But he can't hit LHP and this team doesn't "need" LH bats. Those were my points.

With his offensive production, who cares? I'm curious if ARod still wants to play SS. He seems to be pretty vain and I'm not sure if he wants to make that switch, has anyone heard him (ARod) mention this at all? What now? -
If they make no improvements I'd take the under on 790 without question. You aren't taking into account things like underperformance, injury, and substitutions by inept players. You paint a very rosy pitcher where nobody gets hurt or underperforms. That's how Jim Hendry puts together teams and why he's always so confused when they don't live up to his expectations. The Cubs haven't been an inept offensive ballclub for years by accident.

Not that good. Not that he did all that well in Coors either. Not that much of an improvement over Theriot, although he does hit considerably better against RHP, which could allow a platoon of Theriot/Matsui to be much better than strictly Theriot.
