The vet FA market is always hard to get a read on, but I just dont see a huge market for Smith compared to the value of locking him on a extension and letting him be the leader of the defense for the next realistic window. I guess if someone comes up with a 1st rounder or multiple top 50 picks I could be swayed, but I don't see it. Somebody's money will have to come off the books in 2026 when the team is needing to extend this year's draft picks, might as well be Smith.

He left something like $10 million on the table by leaving early. I'm surprised. Those types of departures are negotiated well in advance. More likely than not there was a buyout and he got a good chunk of the money.

Defense doesn’t barely matter. Defense doesn’t last. It can carry a team for 2-3 years. Offense and Qb matters more, but they weren’t wrong with what they did on D.

the 80’s guys were HOF. The early Lovie years were quite good but heavily dependent on free agents. They abandoned the group in the draft for a decade.

They lose a linebacker and you go to wildcat? Exploit the weakness or dial up a safe 4 yard gain. The gimmick just gives the other teams chance to stop you for a loss. Gimmicks are for when the other team has the advantage, not you.
