What is it about this set-up that you guys don't get? This isn't Crane and the Cubs. This isn't McDonough and the Blackhawks. Ted has football input by virtue of having direct input on who the GM is, and he's had it for decades. OK but if he was one step higher, wouldn't he still have "technical football input" by picking who the president is? No matter what the labels are, unless your owner is a football guy, there will always be a non-football guy picking the top football guy. Yes, and as I said, there's really no point to the "they should sell the team" arguments. What they can do, is replace the failed President and CEO. Organizations do it all the time, especially stagnant ones. -
They used to be. I think that was one of the main areas they invested in once Pace came on. From what I've looked around (whatever is listed on Wikipedia) they seem competetive size wise now. It certainly looks like they have a smaller front office based off what they list on the website, but every team seems to break it down differently. The Cowboys look like they only show Jerry and three top execs for the entire front office.

There is no reason why the same boobs would need to have most of the input in hiring the actual football guys with a more qualified president of football operations, especially when one of the biggest boobs, Ted, is gone.

Ted has football input by virtue of having direct input on who the GM is, and he's had it for decades. i mean if it weren't ted, that line ultimately ends at the mccaskeys (just like it would with PTR on the cubs hiring the head baseball guy) so what are we really arguing about here? this ownership is always going to determine who the hires are, so we better just hope they get lucky at some point. We're arguing about Ted not being held to any level of accountability and about bringing in a new team president. This "it's always been that way so it's going to be that way forever" attitude is bizarre. There's no point in talking about whether ownership should sell, what you can argue for is change in management and there is a clear need for a change at the top of the Bears management. It's a mismanaged football organization.

George takes advice from other owners in the league, on how to run his team. And internally he takes input from Ted Phillips. The Bears make it clear in their announcements and in their execs bios that Ted makes those decisions. George has final say but his final say is approving for not approving Ted's recommendations. It's still Ted's recommendations.

Further to that. The only person who's opinion actually matters is the owner. Look at the Blackhawks. They hired a baseball marketing man to run a hockey org. At the end of the day when he wanted to go one direction and the owner disagreed, the GM won out. The major difference here is the Blackhawks moved on after a decade despite massive success, the Bears are doubling down with the same dope who has been in charge for 30 years. The Bears also don't have a Scotty Bowman type in house advising George directly. George is a kindly grandpa type who leans heavily on Ted for football decisions. That's a problem. McDonough was there for obvious business upgrades. The Bears aren't in a position where they need some business wiz to run things. They are on cruise control. Ted has had far greater input into the product on the field than any similar prez in Chicago sports.

Ted Phillips has spent nearly 3 decades deciding who the football executives should be. He has failed at his job. Crane Kenney did not spend 3 decades determining who the top baseball mind would be.

The problem is Crane Kenney has no input on who runs the baseball department, Ted Phillips, for some reason, has a lot of input on who runs the football department. Ted should not have input on that matter. Well that's the "more or less" part. You could basically have Pace report direct to McCaskey would be the only change. I'm not sure how much actual say Phillips has in these decisions. If you read through the lines I think you can argue he's just the business-capable extension of McCaskey to carry out his vision. That's a pretty damn huge "more or less". I think it's been clear every time they've made these decisions that Ted has major input on not just how much they pay the guy, but who the guy ends up being. George clearly leans on him and shows no disappointment in his work.

The right processes were very clearly not in place when Pace traded for Mitch. He was more or less on his own. There was no input from the head coach let alone anybody who coaches offense at the NFL level. It was the first time he ever evaluated college QBs, as a pro personnel guy this was all new. Nagy is there now and presumably the other offensive coaches and there is no way Pace can go rogue in the draft and do the same dumb process he did last time. Will that be enough? I don't know. I still think they can do it. I do not think Ted and George can find a better GM/HC combo, not because there are none available, but I don't think they are capable of finding better.

They're really beating around the bush on the "is Ted really staying around" issue and I think they need to be more persistent on that issue. Stop asking George why he is in charge. He's the GD owner. Start asking about Ted. Specifically there should be a questions about succession planning at the president's level. Is Ted here for another year? Is Ted here for 2-3 or is the next round of chopping blocks in 2021/22 going to be a Ted/Ryan/Matt triumvirate?

This is not good. I think there is a way to sell this decision as the right way to move forward, but they aren't going that at all. I assumed the family was looking for stability after years of constant turnover, but this press conference is really just selling stability for stability's sake.

On the other hand the freaking Steelers won the North and they suck. Everybody in the NFC West is quite beatable. The worst matchup is Seattle on the road but I'm not sure they still have the same aura the past few years, with quite a few home losses for a team that was supposed to be impossible to beat in their stadium. AFC North had 3 playoff teams this year. The AFC North also got to play the NFC East this year. Pittsburgh also got Jacksonville, so that's 7 games against trash teams this season. I take with a grain of salt the bloated win totals in the AFC this year. They had the three worst teams in football this year.

This is one of the few days of the year I'll listen to a little talk radio and laugh to myself about all the guys who have listened to press conferences their entire life and then call in and complain that it was all fluff or spin or whatever. I'm trying to figure out if I want to listen to the conference with Bernstein's chatter in the background, sometimes it's mildly entertaining when he scoffs at everything but it can also be a bit much.

8th easiest schedule this year. Well I was thinking more in terms of "projected" SOS. That always seems high, whether or not it ranks that way at the end or the year. I may also just be making it up completely. Well they haven't had a 4th place schedule in a few years so that removes the perceived easiest wins and they've had a 1st and a 2nd place opponent in two of those years so that gives the perception of being tough.

I feel like we're on the verge of one of those Bears seasons where the team will somehow pull a 13-3 season out of its rear end (complete with two losses to the Packers) with a humiliating first round out in the playoffs, followed by extensions given to everyone because the team did so gosh darn well in the regular season. Sign me up
