  1. I read in the Redeye today that the Cubs have led the league in hitting since like April 21st with a .295 BA. How can that possibly be? In that 19 game stretch, the Cubs have been held at 3 runs or less 10 times. And yet they have a .295 BA in that stretch. How is the team collectively hitting so well, and the starting pitching has been at least average if not slightly above. Yet we can't score runs and lose more than we win. A nice looking batting average does not necessarily mean the team is hitting well. Also, for what it's worth, over the last 7 days the Cubs are 10th in the NL in AVG, 12th in OBP, 8th in SLG and 10th in OPS, and 8th in runs scored. So it's not like runs are just magically not being scored.
  2. I do sort of think that multiple errors every game is kind of a downer.
  3. Seriously? Whoops, looks like I misread Jersey's post. But yes -- actually I don't see why anyone should be off the table. Taking him off the table has nothing to do with it, you can't trade a pitcher with a huge contract for any sort of value when you handling him the way the Cubs are handling Zambrano. Teams won't understand that Z is still strong starter material just because Lou decided to put him in the pen? I don't buy that. Did I say that?
  4. It wouldn't be a bad thing if they moved them down, it's just not worth getting upset over them not. Put it this way, going forward, who has the better remainder of the season, Lee or Byrd/Soriano? Can you say Byrd or Soriano with enough confidence to justify mocking the decision to keep Lee in the heart of the order? But its not about who has the better remainder of the season, its who is having the better season/week at this point. I wasnt clamoring for Lee/Aram to be moved down when they 1st started struggling, but this has evolved way past a mini slump. We are talking 15 for his last 90 with 1 HR, and 1 double for Lee in that span, and Aram has been all year. Once they start hitting you move them back up, its not like they are being moved down for some slouches, or have to remain there for the rest of the year. They need to start winning games on a DAILY basis, and not worry about who has the better numbers at the end of the season, because right now, Sori and Soto are head and shoulders above Lee/Aram. They have been better, so far. But what they have done so far this year tells you nothing about what they will do today.
  5. Versus is owned by Comcast, which obviously has a stake in all those CSN broadcasts.
  6. I overheard two of those douches comparing their vodka red bull intake while watching some match recently. Although they were wearing suits and not the typical MMA douchebag uniform.
  7. I think they only show the local feed when there is another vs game and they then cut in to show the other. I'm fairly certain they have at least 2, since I've seen non-olczyk that were definitely VS feeds, and he is doing VS games. And I have heard both Emrick and Sam Rosen. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NHL_on_Versus_commentator_pairings
  8. Hawks and Canucks are it tonight. Yeah Hawks are the only NHL game tonight. It's on VS and CSN, though for out of town people like me I assume CSN will be blacked out again. I wonder if VS will do a separate announcer team then. Or just cut in on the CSN broadcast. I believe I've seen it both ways. I have to assume it will be a VS crew. I feel like it's been that way all throughout.
  9. I would agree to disagree if you opinion made any sense.
  10. from The Des Moines Register Postponed due to cold? The forecast says temps in the 50s. It was in the 50's, but the rain and 30 mile per hour winds didn't do much for making it FEEL like it was in the 50's. I heard them mention wind chill at least once yesterday. Heartland my butt, more like pansyland.
  11. It's voicing frustration. There's not really meant to be a positive effect. So whats the point then? It makes you feel better inside? I'm not saying everyone should be "that's ok do better tomorrow!", but booing as constantly as our fans do does nothing to help the team do better at all. If you want to voice frustration, don't show up at the game. That is a billion times more likely to do something to better the team. Then why are you whining about this, when there was a problem with effort. The ball was a few feet away, and he didn't go get it. That didn't take much effort, but he didn't even offer that. As I said below, theres a difference between a 10 year vet doing that and a 20 year old rookie who has played 4 games above AA ball in his career and is probably full of nerves. That's my opinion. As I said, if you feel you must boo then whatever I'm not going to stop you, I just think it's dumb. I don't know how what this difference is that you are trying to pretend exists, but it was a lazy play. And personally I don't boo. I'm not a fan of booing. But in a world where booing is a completely acceptable form of showing frustration, especially for lazy play, there's nothing wrong with fans booing that.
  12. But isn't their success largely based on Dwight Howard? And don't the Bulls lack anybody that can compare?

  14. You think Joe Johnson and Channing Frye is the best way to go to build a contender? Channing Frye would be an ok piece to spread the floor, but he's a guy. That's it. Joe Johnson is going to get a max or close to it contract. He's 28. The wheels fall off the shooting guards around age 28-30 and you want to pay him max money? That's your plan for beating LeBron and Howard? Bad plan. Yes, because there are so many fool-proof plans out there to beat teams led by LeBron and Howard. I don't really know anything about these guys in question, but would it be better to not lock into a huge contract with obvious second rate guys who won't do much to improve the chances of winning a championship. Or do people just want whatever free agent they can get and hope to become a 4/5 seed for years to come?
  15. Man, in my mind I thought Manitoba was where Saskatchewan was and vice versa. I thought Winnipeg was over the Dakotas and still relatively close to Calgary and Edmonton, but Calgary is actually about as close to Winnipeg as Chicago is (~850 miles), and 450 miles from the next closest team, Minneapolis. That said in today's world, it doesn't matter as much as it used to. kujay, why do you want a team in Hartford again? It was one of the worst drawing teams in the NHL back in the early 90's and is within 100 miles of 4 other teams. Hartford struggled because the team was never good, the arena sucked, and the new owner basically forced his way out. It's a small metro area, but still twice as big as Winnipeg. The isolation thing is not just about travel, but don't ignore travel. It's very cost effective to play fairly close to many of your rivals. Also, the obvious benefits of having a team in NY/Philly type distance is rivalry, fans going to each others games, which helps even when the home team struggles.
  16. There's a reason NY's football teams thrive when located nowhere near public transit while the baseball teams are surrounded by trains. Fans will drive anywhere 8 Sundays a year. Not so for 81 days a summer. The only non-Wrigley option is suburban, and suburban baseball does not sell east of LA.

  18. I think the isolation thing matters as well. Look at the Rangers, who have the Islanders and Devils within cab distance, and then Philly in bus/train distance, plus Boston, Buffalo, Pittsburgh and Washington all in closer proximity than Winnipeg is to its nearest neighbor, the Wild. Florida even has a closer neighbor in Tampa, with actual populations between them. On a side note, they would have to have them switch divisions with the Avalanche, correct? They have to compete with the BC teams and the Wild, with Colorado looking south and west for its new rivals.
  19. In a lot of ways, the NJ Devils are off the radar, but they still have major corporations (and smaller businesses) putting money into it. I don't know Florida's situation, but if you are looking for a franchise to thrive, I'm not sure you want to be comparing yourself to them.
  20. Yes, it's ideal. The organization has demoted him from opening day starter to occasional reliever in favor of Randy Wells, Carlos Silva and Tom Gorzellany. The only thing better would be if they made him stay back in Chicago next week when they head to Philly, that way other teams would know they are serious and make their very best offers.
  21. He turned his back and lolligagged toward the ball. That's lazy. That may not be sit on your couch all day on a Saturday lazy, but in the context of a sporting event, when very little effort will keep the guy at first base, that was absolutely lazy.
  22. What you do have is numerous businesses in both of those cities who can buy season tickets and provide sponsorships. It's not just about having enough people to buy tickets, but having a big enough local economy to support a sponsorship based business like pro sports. The Packers get by because of the revenue sharing in the NFL, but the NHL has failed in several smaller hamlets, hockey mad and not hockey mad. Edmonton has at times been a threat to fold. I'd really like to see it work, but it's going to be tough to get a franchise to thrive there.
  23. They booed after he stood around watching the ball that allowed Hanley to go to 2nd. I don't see anything pathetic about it. It wasn't a misplay. It was laziness. I realize that but it's his first ever game at home, and he's supposed to be a highly touted prospect, and you are already booing him? Freddie Bynum making 4 errors in 3 innings back in 2006 didn't get as bad of boos as I heard on Sportsnight last night. I don't think it was pure laziness either. I think he was dropping his head in disgust for his own play. Not saying its right because you should always be attentive and its never ok for Hanley to take 2nd. But I just feel like we are booing way too early and often these days and often times it makes us look stupid. They didn't boo him for making an error, they booed him when he acted like a lazy idiot and gave up a base. There's nothing stupid about booing that play. It was really bad.
