  1. The owner of the Orioles hasn't made Cal Ripken Jr. Manager of the Orioles. What do I win? Wait, what? When did Cal ever make efforts to manage the Orioles? It should be obvious I'm talking about the type of situation Sandberg is in, not just beloved players randomly being asked to manage out of the blue. I thought that he had expressed interest before he started buying minor league franchises. Actually he expressed interest in buying the Orioles if Angelos were willing to sell. I would not be surprised if Ripken jumped at the chance to manage the Orioles but I haven't found any quotes so I'll concede that point. It seems like Billy Williams used to want to be the manager of the Cubs. Babe Ruth never got to manage the Yankees, though I guess they were never in a position to need the publicity of that hire. But the difference is Ryno has put in his time in the minors. Lots of guys wanted to get the gig handed to them, but it was hard to justify. Ryno has played good soldier for 5 years and is almost a lock to get an offer.
  2. With so many teams looking to give out max contracts and so few max worthy players available, isn't it almost a guarantee that he gets one?
  3. Which equals 700,000 rabid hockey fans. And I 100% agree with UM. More Canadian teams is good for the NHL. Yes, there are presumably 100% rabid fans, but it's still an extremely small metro area to support a team. People have talked about the struggles that Edmonton and Calgary have had keeping up with the big boys, and Winnipeg is considerably smaller than both of those cities, and not growing nearly as fast. It's also completely isolated, nowhere near the three BC teams, and more than 450 miles from Minneapolis. I am a big fan of NHL teams being in Canada, and I always enjoy seeing Canadian teams in the playoffs. But Winnipeg seems like a difficult place to put a team right now.
  4. That's not true. The Cubs were 22-31 on June 2nd in 2007. And yeah, that team only wound up with 85 wins as it backed its way in, and 85 wins isn't going to get it done, but we're also not 9 games under on June 2nd YET. But at this point in the season they were only 1 game under .500 and in 5th place. They dipped down then came right back up. This team has been bad all season. They are already this far in the whole, and while you can blame underperformance from a couple guys, they've been getting overperformance by just as many, if not more. Also while they were 9 games under on June 2nd, they were scoring more runs than they were giving up at the time (and on May 11 of that year they were +27), the record was bound to recover. This team is being outscored. There's no point in pretending it's early and that their current standing doesn't mean anything. When they've been in this position before, it has led to really bad seasons. The odds are against them.
  5. I really have a hard time understanding how Winnipeg can handle a franchise. It's entire metropolitan area is under 700,000 people.
  6. They booed after he stood around watching the ball that allowed Hanley to go to 2nd. I don't see anything pathetic about it. It wasn't a misplay. It was laziness.
  7. 4 games under .500, 10th place in the wild card. It's a fairly daunting task. Not that I expect this team to contend, but I don't see how being in "10th place" right now has much cogency at all. Sure, that's a lot of teams to pass but 130 games is an exceedingly long time to do so. They're a half game behind three of those teams (Florida, Pittsburgh, Los Angeles) and only five games back of the wild card leader (San Francisco). Because you can be fairly certain one team in the hunt is going to put together a solid season that makes it very difficult for teams in the back of the pack to hang. For all the talk of it being "too early" to worry, this is foreign territory for recent Cubs teams that have been in contention. They've led the division at this point of the season, been in second place, they've been at .500 and right at the head of the wild card race, but there's only one team in the NL with a worse record than the Cubs right now. That's a very big problem.
  8. You're not sure why they would extend an offer to ND? In light of the statements coming from the athletic department, yes. Especially after all those reports that the Big Ten wasn't going to offer them anything and that they'd basically have to beg on their knees to get membership. Statements aren't all that meaningful, actions speak louder than words, and it was quite obvious all along that the big ten was going to make a push for ND. Nobody should be surprised that they would make an offer.
  9. You're not sure why they would extend an offer to ND?
  10. That would be normal reality. For me, I don't understand why you'd want Texas, since no matter what teams are picked the Big 10 is going to be in great shape. Why add another 800 pound gorilla to the conference? It makes basketball more exciting? Texas is the second most populous state in the union. Duh. Yes, I understand why it makes sense from a business perspective. As an Illini fan though, what's in it for you? The Big 10 is looking great whether they add Texas or Pitt, so why pull for the school that ensures you never do anything relevant in football ever again? I'm a big ten fan in general, so I'd like to see this simply for entertainment value. Mizzou is worthless, and despite it's history Nebraska is quite dull. Rutgers is also fairly worthless, except for me personally I have friends who are alums and would be more likely to actually attend some college football games on a regular basis.
  11. So you'd rather the Big Ten have Texas than Mizzou, Nebraska and Rutgers? I would absolutely prefer they add just Texas than those three.
  12. But they went with a much bigger "star" manager in Piniella.
  13. You are calling for heads to roll. How is dropping them in the order causing heads to roll? Did you read the post, or just the first sentence? I clearly stated that they need to be dropped to the bottom of the lineup. Yes I read it. And it was a whole lot of words to say very little. You start off talking about heads needing to roll and then say the lineup should move a little. Lineup position is not all that important, so I am having a hard time rationalizing your apparent sense of urgency for something big to happen, with a request for something relatively meaningless to happen.

  16. I'd be stunned if it wasn't. As much as I'd like Ricketts to be some kind of baseball savant above all else, as a businessman he'd have to be an idiot to not recognize the PR coup that would come with giving Sandberg the job, especially after 2 letdown seasons. They could easily frame it so that his first year will be a rebuilding year so he doesn't get slammed too much, if at all (look how Lou's been treating with kid's gloves), if the team does poorly. Is that what we will have been waiting a year for Ricketts to figure out? To hire a Cub legend with no experience to score vacuous points with the masses, devoid of actual analysis on what will make the Cubs successful long term? Goodness I hope not. What matters is who the GM is, and what players that GM acquires. I would prefer somebody other than Ryno, but he's not going to make or break the team.
  17. Wait, what? Talk about being melodramatic. Finishing 83-78 was underwhelming and a letdown, but a "historic underachievement?" Yeah, right. By Cubs standards it was a glowing success.
  18. What exactly are these options they would be finding out about? Mainly if any of our current coaches can manage. not a good example
  19. What exactly are these options they would be finding out about?
  20. They are 4 games under .500, 6 games out of first, 5 games out of the wild card and in 10th place. What you said is exactly what people said in 2005 and 2006, until they finally gave up. And they are essentially in the same position as they were in 2005. Somebody is bound to put together a solid season to win the WC, and it's highly doubtful that will be the Cubs.
  21. it's British, and since the lousy canucks still bow to the queen, that's how they have to write it.
  22. If the plan was to give Ryno a couple months to prove he's no good and then move on to better options, sure, why not. But it seems as though Ricketts really likes the idea of having a Cubs legend manage the Cubs, so they aren't going to set him up to fail.
  23. http://www.baseballamerica.com/today/prospects/rankings/organization-top-10-prospects/2010/ Doesn't baseballamerica provide just a straight top ten list for each team for free?
  24. from The Des Moines Register Postponed due to cold? The forecast says temps in the 50s.
