  1. Why do you insist on being a dick? I was just providing evidence that I was not the only one who thought this way. Neyer is pretty respected baseball writer not some smuck on a message board who insists on acting 12 whenever he can. You mean "schmuck." And why do you insist on trumping up such an inane, ridiculous argument with outdated editorials from the likes of Neyer? These are mysteries the world will never solve. What's wrong with Neyer?
  2. My understanding is that ESPN wants the Big 12 to stay alive because they were afraid of a huge Fox deal with a 16-team Pac 10/Big 12. But with Fox being the network in charge of the new TV contract for the Big 12, they're surely taking dollars away from ESPN. Thus, if the Big 12 collapsed, it's less of a hit on ESPN than it would be to them if the conference remains and signs a mega deal with Fox. I don't get your whole Fox versus ESPN talk. Fox tried playing with ESPN, they lost, like a decade ago.
  3. Because the only meaningful thing about basketball is the tournament and for that conference alignment doesn't really mean much.
  4. Did somebody say the big 12 network would compete with ESPN?
  5. Somebody big and meaingful, not Nebraska.
  6. Stopping at Nebraska would be a hilarious misstep by the Big Ten. Adding a has been program with no eyeballs does absolutely nothing for them, and it wastes their best effort to actually get the school they've always wanted.
  7. Well then you shouldn't dive if you don't want to get unfairly punished for breaking the rules. Diving isn't so cut and dry that you can make those types of decisions. There are plenty of cut and dry ones. If you announce that you will hand out yellows after the fact to anybody who is found to have taken a dive, and a player dives, then he should play the rest of the game with the knowledge that he might have a yellow since he took a dive.

  9. It's only because he made less in the first couple years. Don't pay attention to that fangraphs nonsense, their $ values are terribly skewed. I was going off average annual value. And the fangraphs numbers are skewed if you don't understand what they are trying to say. I understand what they are trying to say and it's dumb.
  10. It's only because he made less in the first couple years. Don't pay attention to that fangraphs nonsense, their $ values are terribly skewed. Agreed, but it's still ridiculous to say that he has almost negative value right now even if the Cubs picked up a good chunk of his contract. Absolutely.
  11. Why? Outside of the first month, he never had a month with an OPS below .835, and he's at .838 for his career. Outside of missing time due to injury he was very good in 2008 and a critical part of that team's success. A SLG heavy OPS that isn't even all that impressive of an OPS to begin with.

  13. laughter is the best medicine
  14. The cancer bit? It was edgy, it was not my sort of thing but some of those people out there, they really liked it.
  15. We are all Paraguayians!!!
  16. i have to say, if niemi is really like this, i disapprove. i want a cocky, attention-whore goalie who's pissed that he has to wear a mask. a goalie who desires to be in the spotlight and around the action. someone who is smiling under all that gear when we're all clenching our asses and grinding our teeth. Why? The only reason would be to reassure you that you can win. But that guy would also get an inordinate salary based on his marketability. Screw that.
  17. The little italian kids don't see to know the words to their national anthem.
  18. That's it. He's not good enough defensively to play CF full time and doesn't hit with enough power to play one of the corner spots. From what I've seen in both the minors and with the Cubs his arm his strong and accurate and he's a decent route runner, but nothing spectacular. I'm not sure why so many people here are so down on him, I think he might be able to start on a team that gets power else where, but for most teams in the post steroid era he's likely to be a backup. Personally, I'm not "down" on him altogether. A 4th OF can be very useful. I'm just down on the idea of him as a starter with the way this OF is constructed for now and likely will be for a while to come. If the Cubs had sure things who were younger in one or both of the other OF spots, OK, but that's not the case. As it stands right now, looking to make Colvin a starting position player wouldn't be likely to help this team except in regards to payroll. It's not only that lack of other OF, but the other corner infielders, and no "Chase Utley" type to provide replacement power at another position.
  19. I have to laugh at the notion that those horns are part of their culture.
  20. He was definitely in "need to rally mode" before going on stage.
  21. It sounds less like recruiting and more like the bachelor with Wade giving people the opportunity to be considered to play with him.
  22. Why is it that every time they show him on camera before a game, he's communicating via whistling and gestures to somebody very far away?
  23. There's no chance of losing Seabrook for nothing. He's a $3.5 million cap hit this season and then an RFA next season. There's plenty of cap room to resign him next year, with $4.5 million in bonus cap hit off the books, plus I expect the cap to go up a solid amount the next few years as league revenues are on the uptick. There's plenty of room to sign him to a $5-6 million extension that he deserves. Oh, he'd still only be RFA, then yeah, not this offseason.
  24. I do not think you can realistically create divisions that takes Penn State away from all its nearest opponents, and puts them in with all of their furthest opponents. Why not? They fly to every opponent as it is. Having a top 3 of PSU/Nebraska/Iowa vs. a top 3 of OSU/Michigan/Wisconsin is as equal as you can find from a competitive balance standpoint. The rest of the league falls in line geographically and from a rivalry standpoint outside of Wisconsin. Well first off it might not only affect football. And secondly, it will affect fans a great deal. The conference game road trip is quite popular. If Penn State is only playing Iowa, Minnesota and Nebraska, nobody is going to be driving out there, and it's going to piss off a lot of people. They've be isolated. Also, Penn State is the bigger brand, but they aren't that much better of a program (and who knows what happens when Joe goes). If they were head and shoulders and torso above Wisconsin, I could see the point in considering it, but they really aren't.
