  1. That's not true at all. It's primary purpose has always been as a marketing tool to showcase big names on the field at one time. They have a long history of bypassing the most productive players of the first half for bigger stars. no, there is a history of some of the more productive players being skipped over for bigger stars - hence the fan voting That's what I said. The point is you were wrong about the primary purpose. It's a marketing event, not some reward. Half the guys don't even want to be there.
  2. That implies that they wouldn't if he goes to Miami or NY? It seems that every single time he talks about sports, Kaplan has this really big time executive from some industry who knows the answer. He's probably talking about his favorite Foot Locker associate.
  3. Just to clarify, Soriano has sucked in June, and Byrd has sucked for the second half of June. There isn't an OF on this team that has to start every day, can start every day, or should start every day. There are plenty of opportunities to get Colvin in there without making Fukudome the scapegoat.
  4. Is. It is a good idea to sit Kosuke for the rest of the year? Why? You said of both things, "isn't", but you should have said "starting Colvin.... isn't, but sitting Kosuke.... is."

  6. I hope the Cubs suck, and think that the fact that they do suck is awesome.
  7. It's a little more scary to face the Lions first game. You don't know what they are going to be. Plus, crazy things can happen in the first game of the season that don't really speak to the rest of the season. Plus I don't trust a Lovie team to be prepared out of the gate. There are reasons why the Bears may lose that game. Heck, the Lions might actually be decent this year. Eh, I'm not that concerned about their ability to start the season. They beat the Colts on opening night, beat Green Bay once as well (then destroyed Detroit in week 2). Since they became good under Lovie (2005) they are 2-3 on week 1, losing to a couple good teams in GB and San Diego, and losing another road game in Washington. If they didn't have so many tough road games on opening weekends, they'd probably have a better record. I'm more worried about the middle of the season, which is when most of the bad years have fallen apart.
  8. The harm is it hurts Fukudome's trade value. Kosuke needs to start to keep his trade value high or we'll have a $13 million player sitting on the bench unmovable. If we can trade Kosuke, however, I have no problem at all giving all the starts to Colvin (similarly to what Castro's done since being called up). Fukudome sitting on the bench does more for his trade value, than Fukudome playing and OPSing .499. Plus, he is being outplayed by pretty badly (.889 to .499). Fukudome has a 499 OPS? I really haven't been paying attention to this team.
  9. Steinbrenner "subsidizes" other teams because that's the rules of the league, not because he doesn't give a crap about money. The question then is "why"? I don't think the answer is, "because he can". I think it kills the hard core conservative family to pay the tax, but I think it would hurt a lot more if they didn't win. And if they continued to not win I don't think the salary would go that high for long. But like I said, I think this is not really the point. The Cubs don't need a Steinbrenner, but they don't need a Tribune Co. either. What I hope for is a Mark Cuban type. So far Ricketts has said all the right things, but it hasn't translated to action other than hiring a real statistical analyst. The draft was his first chance to make a good impression and that doesn't look so good, right now (not just b/c of the 1st rounder either). Why? Because he can, and because he has to. The Yankees are filthy rich. They make a ton of dough. MLB dictated that the big boys have to pay a tax if they go past a threshold, and that threshold doesn't come close to hurting Steinbrenner. Also, what exactly has Mark Cuban accomplished?
  10. The best part of this entire circus is reading all the theories people have on why LeBron would want to do (or not do) something. Not only that, but would there really be a question between Lebron and Wade?
  11. Steinbrenner "subsidizes" other teams because that's the rules of the league, not because he doesn't give a crap about money.
  12. Name one freaking team that does all that and can't compete because the big boys are stealing their players. Do it, now. There isn't one. The only teams that aren't competitive are run by morons. Plenty of small market teams compete, and they compete with regularity. Baseball is a sport where players are paid relatively little while they are at their best, and overpaid significantly as they regress. It's in most teams best interest to let the big boys overspend on the older stars. The fact is this is how major league baseball is set-up, so if you are a fan of a team, and you want to see them win, you should hope they play the game to the best of their ability. I didn't take any less enjoyment out of the Stanley Cup win because the Blackhawks did it with a roster they could not keep together due to salary cap rules. I would not for a second regret a world series title won by a roster that had to be overpaid to achieve it.
  13. What does the national team's schedule look like over say, the next two years? And how does that conflict with club team seasons? When does qualifying for the next world cup begin?
  14. He is an invalid. The boys are running the show. He was never in NY when that team was winning in the 90's and earlier this decade. Worrying about Ricketts whereabouts is stupid.
  15. I didn't miss it. Your point was Steinbrenner is a meddling owner and meddling owners are bad. My point was your point is full of [expletive]. Andy Pettitte has more world series rings than t's in his name. And it's not solely b/c they spend more than everyone else. The early Jeter teams weren't that expensive. I want an owner who is more concerned with winning than making a profit. I want an owner who is not afraid to put people on notice for poor performance. I don't want a country club type who yucks it up in the bleachers than goes on vacation during the middle of his first season. And I don't particularly care that there are other "family members". He's the CEO. A) How absurd of you to fall back on the taking a vacation line. B) Don't fall for the happy horsecrap that Steinbrenner's profit line is wins or whatever, nonsense, they make money, plenty of it. C) Steinbrenner spends next to zero time in NY. It doesn't matter where the hell the owner is located.
  16. What Steinbrenner does is disgusting. It is downright un-American. I will not accept a World Series done the "Steinbrenner way". I would accept it with open arms. Unfortunately, there can only be one team that does it the Steinbrenner way, by definition, since that way is to spend a crap ton more than every single other team.
  17. If the difference is 10 titles to 5, I think south beach wins out. meh, miami is a [expletive]-hole. For most people, sure, especially non-south beach areas. But where really rich young people can go, it's glorious.
  18. If the difference is 10 titles to 5, I think south beach wins out.
  19. Were there people thinking a longer term suspension was likely?
  20. Plus there's still a chance they can get a top five draft pick out of this season. Only 3.5 games seperate them.
  21. The pbp and color guys for this tournament are light-years better than almost any baseball pbp and color guys No question. The studio analysis is meh though. I was referring to the studio guys.
  22. You don't think he has a feel for the team, having spent several years with them already? I suppose he does. I don't know, I just want Lou gone and I don't buy this "Well, the season's gone anyway so you might as well let him finish it out" talk. It's the talk of someone who really doesn't give a damn. If he's not performing, can him and bring in someone else. Managers are replaceable. Let Trammel take over and see what he can get out of them. It'll help toward making a managerial decision for next year. What harm could come of it? Potential harm is that Trammel is saddled with the crappy 2010 Cubs, they continue to lose, he then doesn't get a real shot at the job for the future, opening up the risk of hiring a lesser candidate. I'm certainly not going to be upset if Lou gets canned, I just see very little upside. If Hendry is allowed to make the replacement, it will be a travesty. I'd hate to see them can Lou, then stick with Jim for the duration and cause me to worry about him coming back again next year. If they make a move, drop the bomb and kill them all.
