  1. That's nonsense. Why can't he hit leadoff? There's even less of a sample to go on than the BS that people used to try and claim Soriano could only hit leadoff. His value is tied to his OBP and that's quite valuable at the top of the order. Wow. Somebody woke up on the wrong side of the bottle this morning. No, I just find your reasoning absurd.

  3. I'm already hearing and seeing the idiots clamoring for better fundamentals and defense; like those are the only two problems this team has. So you admit that those are two problems, but are upset that people want them to get better in those areas? :-k Yes, because people over emphasize that nonsense while ignoring the bigger problems and the Cubs often end up "fixing" stuff that doesn't help the team actually win more games. Defense is nonsense? I realize that this site is all about the numbers and that defense is harder to analyze statistically than offense, but your statement is ridiculous. You don't think playing better defense helps you win more games? I'm talking about the more generic concept of fundamentals. But the last time they decided to improve the team by getting guys that could catch the ball they didn't help anything. You don't overcome the problems of poor run production and shaky pitching just by getting better at defense. This team is 12th in runs scored and 13th in ERA. It would be nice to get better at defense, but it's vital that they get better at hitting and pitching.
  4. 2005 DLee Not really.
  5. Kosuke career in leadoff spot: .243/.364/.380/.744. OPS is a little low, but mainly because he hasn't slugged at all in the leadoff spot. There's little wrong with that OBP, however, and that's the most important thing for a guy hitting leadoff. What stats reflect that he shouldn't be a leadoff hitter? I would bet it's his AVG and SB.
  6. That doesn't make it difficult to find him the right spot. He should be 2, and Castro should not. There's also no reason he can't bat leadoff.
  7. If the Cubs were 20 games over .500 and it was Lee who hit that pop up gift triple that could have been an inside the park homerun, people would have said, "Those are the lucky breaks teams get when they are 20 games over .500". Instead Brenly gets people in a lather over a gift triple.

  9. When there's a good chance that pop up is going to fall in for a hit? It's not like this was a pop up to the second baseman that he lost in the sun and Soriano wasn't running full speed around the bases. That was always going to be a ball that could easily cause problems. And it's also different from a guy who is protecting himself and is cautious all the way around the bases but Soriano is aggressive after he gets on base so why is it different for him coming out of the box? I certainly don't want any changes to the team over it, but I don't think there's any reason to try to cover up lapses in hustle either. Even though it doesn't actually affect the season, it still affects the enjoyment level of most fans greatly. If a fan lost enjoyment over that ugly triple they are dumb, but they also probably only lost it because Brenly harped on it for so long. It was a pop up to RF that should have been caught. He was slow out of the box, but you could tell while running he also wasn't busting tail, probably because the guy has lame legs. He ended up on 3rd base and an inside the park HR was hardly a guarantee.
  10. The Jets and Redskins look like a couple of pathetic football teams and the new meadowlands is a pretty crappy stadium. $1.6B for just a bloated version of the older one?
  11. I don't think that was the boning everything that did that. It was the being married while boning everything that did. He no longer has that issue. I don't think it was the boning everything that made him a billionaire with athletic success either. Maybe...but it didn't hurt. (Again, other than the whole "married" aspect...that was problematic.) I don't see how there's any more evidence that it helped compared to hurting. Successful sexual conquests can increase one's confidence in himself, contributing to greatness on the golf course.
  12. I don't believe that is a fact you can prove.
  13. Those are theoretical possibilities, not Jim Hendry telegraphs his next move as blatantly as anybody in baseball possibilities and refuses to play coy because he doesn't want to hurt anybody's feelings.
  14. He was boning everything while in pursuit of everything he has.
  15. There's also the matter of how desperate a team is to trade a guy. A team that really wants to dump a guy lowers that guy's value. Other teams have to compete with each other for the player, but they also have to compete with the original team's willingness to walk away from the table. If you're willing to pay a bench player $12M, then your willingness to walk away from the table hasn't really changed. How much Fukudome will help the other team really hasn't changed. so the trade value hasn't really changed. There's willingness to put a $12m player on the bench midseason and willingness to keep a $12m bench player on the team. Very different things. Not sure why you would assume that stays the same.
  16. I didn't watch much, but it did look like a couple receivers were confused out there in addition to Cutler having happy feet.
  17. In a way he's done that a couple times. The problem is with a 5 man unit it takes more than one offseason of attention to get right. You can't just spend a #1 on a tackle one offseason and assume you are set. You can't just spend an offseason signing retiring hall of famers and other teams' castoffs and think you are set. It requires constant attention and multiple top half of the draft selections. They need to stop drafting athletes in the 2nd/3rd round and start drafting guys who can play football, especially on the offensive line. But I also don't trust Angelo to make the right decision when he does focus on the line.

  19. Pretty much just a good philosophy to have in life. Look how well it worked for Tiger. Oh wait... He's a billionaire with a ton of athletic success. Looks like it turned out okay to me.
  20. Every organization likes their booze, it's the boozing on the road that seperates the Cardinals from most other squads.
  21. It's pretty weird to be bummed out about this. It was inevitable. It happens to a ton of guys, and he's not a Cub. Why would you bother being bummer about it?
  22. Cot's says he has 7+ years of service time after 2009, so probably due to service time. 2008 was the 6th season he pitched in, and 9th season after his debut. Well, either way the soonest Strasburg would become a free agent is after the 2015 season. But wasn't that part of the reason they delayed his callup this year, to not give him a full year of service time?
  23. Free agency service time? Yes, again I use Ohman as an example, he was granted free agency after the '08 season. It says he signed a minor league contract in March of 2009. Was he granted free agency due to service time or because Atlanta didn't tender him a contract?
  24. Free agency service time?
  25. He's got 1 year of service time, or less actually. Unless he gets credit for 2011 while out with injury, they will control him for 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016. He would be a free agent (unless he signs past that year) at the age of 28.
