  1. Nobody is denying that hitting a baseball is very hard, but these are elite athletes that have been doing this all of their lives and probably made contact, hit the other way, and hit for a high average for many of those years. Look at how many players have changed their swing the last few years to hit more HRs to the detriment of average and contact.
  2. They really need to find hitters that can adapt. These guys have been playing baseball all of their lives and many of given up trying to make contact so they can swing for the fences. It's fun watching the towering homers, but MLB has gotten to the point where there are very few pure "hitters" instead of sluggers. Making contact seems headed for extinction while we watch games with 10+ strikeouts and wait for the occasional HR.
  3. Obviously, the Cubs needed pitching when they made the trade, but Eloy will always be valuable as long as the DH exists. Also, Schwarber was pretty bad in the OF at the start of his career. Can Eloy improve defensively? I doubt it, but he's a monster with the bat.
  4. He just turned 32 and last year he only managed a 101 wRC+, hard to be very confident of much future value since he is poison with a glove in his hand. If we are gonna throw out this weird year as not being the norm moving forward for him, his ~150 wRC+ vs lefties and ~110 vs RHP career still plays with the DH around. Sure not super valuable, but it certainly helps. Especially over 162 games next year if you assume he’s going to be closer to his career norms. Is it safe to think there will be 162 games next year?
  5. The way things are going, we might need his bat. =D> Agreed. Now if only we could figure out who to give it to. We're last in the NL for strikeouts, so maybe some of our bats might be defective.
  6. The way things are going, we might need his bat. =D>
  7. From MLBTR: Cubs To Sign Pedro Strop
  8. The way this year has gone for Quintana, he might be in our price range as a FA.
  9. From MLBTR: Texas is “discussing” Joey Gallo in potential trades, reports ESPN’s Jeff Passan.
  10. Find a new ownership group that would make an offer that PTR couldn't refuse.
  11. As long as we're having reunions, I wouldn't mind having LaStella coming off the bench as a PH in a critical situation.
  12. What about Wilmer Flores? He's got a career .505 SLG/.227 IsoSLG/.824 OPS against LHP I thought we should have signed him as a FA in 2019. Of course, we wouldn't have seen the amazing feats of Descalso, Kemp, Garcia, and Perez then.
  13. Hopefully they come out rested because they're not playing the Royals and Pirates anymore.
  14. The Marlins are leading the N.L. East 2 @ .875.
  15. 5:04pm: MLB will postpone this weekend’s Cards-Cubs series, Joel Sherman of the New York Post reports.
  16. luck Dodgers seem to have a good handle on it as well. I will say this I bet the Venn Diagram of scouts, coaches, players, and FO that dont believe in analytics & sabermetrics would overlap pretty well with the population that doesnt believe in masks & think Covid is a hoax. No surprise that a Friedman or Epstein led franchise would take this seriously. I don't think analytics and sabermetrics has anything to do with the Covid outbreak, especially when you see half the Cubs without masks talking in the dugout.
  17. From MLBTR: https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2020/07/blue-jays-denied-canadian-approval-to-play-games-in-toronto.html
  18. Yeah, you would hate to lose a game using your 7th best pitch while trying to fool a batter.
  19. Translation: If they offer me a king's ransom, I'll sign an extension.
  20. Not a single player from the greatest stretch of Cubs baseball ever who was either developed or acquired under Theo.list> Yep, checks out. Most of these guys were the ones who made me a fan. Obviously, I have different favorites through the many decades that I have rooted for the Cubs. Right now, I really like Baez, Rizzo, and Bryant.
  21. Since I'm an old-timer: Banks Santo Williams Dawson Sandberg Maddux Jenkins Buckner Ramirez Wood Sosa Grace
  22. There are many ways to answer your question, but the $3.2B figure isn't the best. It's not a "return," it's a valuation. A simplified example is you buy a house for $100k. You do some renovations for $20k over a 10 year period. Over that timeframe, the real estate market heats up and the neighborhood becomes more valuable. Today, a real estate agent tells you that the house is worth $150k. This fact alone doesn't change your income or cash position. If PTR would do us a favor and sell high, he wouldn't be poor any longer and then we could feel more comfortable rooting for the Cubs again.
  23. Latest Forbes report says Cubs are worth $3.2 Billion, not a bad return on spending $845 million in 2009. So why did we have to sit out this offseason free agency?
  24. Why not? Because a pre-injured pitcher who hasn't even been good yet is a terrible start to a Kris Bryant trade The Cubs love to shop in the pre-injured pitcher aisle at the store.
  25. Sorry for the suggestion, I forgot that our FO hasn't returned from their 6 month hiatus.
