  1. Cot's has them $104 million under the non-adjusted 2020 payroll with the following players up for arbitration: Caratini Happ Winkler Ryan Almora Martinez Contreras Schwarber Baez Bryant Tepera Rae I can see raises going to Caratini, Happ, Winkler, maybe Ryan, Tepera, but all of them probably would get slight raises because of their low salaries. Obviously, Contreras would get a decent raise, but the big salary guys (Schwarber, Baez, Bryant) should lose in arbitration after their performances this year. I would think there's some money to make some mid-level additions, but convincing PTR of that is another story.
  2. This could be a way to improve the Cubs. Get a top young player as compensation from the receiving team for Theo and bring in someone younger and cheaper to replace him. Let the new guy decide which of the core players to trade to add to the youth movement. Making that one big trade, signing a mid-priced FA (Cesar Hernandez ?). and the compensation player could go pretty far in keeping them competitive while getting younger.
  3. Obviously, Lemahieu would be a great addition, but where are we getting the money to sign him?
  4. Theo would have to find some other team(s) willing to ignore this years stats while trading 1 or 2 of the core players. I don't think Baez or Rizzo are going anywhere and I'm not sure what Bryant and/or Schwarber would get in return. Contreras/Caratini would bring something of value because of their position.
  5. You better sample size that horsefeathers. Quick like. I said "with the Cubs".
  6. More hitters like Billy Hamilton - .300/.364/.600/.964 with the Cubs.
  7. Maybe we ought to be replacing the hitting coach too.
  8. Segura has an extra year at almost $15 million, so that doesn't neutralize the contracts.
  9. Nobody is denying that hitting a baseball is very hard, but these are elite athletes that have been doing this all of their lives and probably made contact, hit the other way, and hit for a high average for many of those years. Look at how many players have changed their swing the last few years to hit more HRs to the detriment of average and contact.
  10. They really need to find hitters that can adapt. These guys have been playing baseball all of their lives and many of given up trying to make contact so they can swing for the fences. It's fun watching the towering homers, but MLB has gotten to the point where there are very few pure "hitters" instead of sluggers. Making contact seems headed for extinction while we watch games with 10+ strikeouts and wait for the occasional HR.
  11. Obviously, the Cubs needed pitching when they made the trade, but Eloy will always be valuable as long as the DH exists. Also, Schwarber was pretty bad in the OF at the start of his career. Can Eloy improve defensively? I doubt it, but he's a monster with the bat.
  12. He just turned 32 and last year he only managed a 101 wRC+, hard to be very confident of much future value since he is poison with a glove in his hand. If we are gonna throw out this weird year as not being the norm moving forward for him, his ~150 wRC+ vs lefties and ~110 vs RHP career still plays with the DH around. Sure not super valuable, but it certainly helps. Especially over 162 games next year if you assume he’s going to be closer to his career norms. Is it safe to think there will be 162 games next year?
  13. The way things are going, we might need his bat. =D> Agreed. Now if only we could figure out who to give it to. We're last in the NL for strikeouts, so maybe some of our bats might be defective.
  14. The way things are going, we might need his bat. =D>
  15. From MLBTR: Cubs To Sign Pedro Strop
  16. The way this year has gone for Quintana, he might be in our price range as a FA.
  17. From MLBTR: Texas is “discussing” Joey Gallo in potential trades, reports ESPN’s Jeff Passan.
  18. Find a new ownership group that would make an offer that PTR couldn't refuse.
  19. As long as we're having reunions, I wouldn't mind having LaStella coming off the bench as a PH in a critical situation.
  20. What about Wilmer Flores? He's got a career .505 SLG/.227 IsoSLG/.824 OPS against LHP I thought we should have signed him as a FA in 2019. Of course, we wouldn't have seen the amazing feats of Descalso, Kemp, Garcia, and Perez then.
  21. Hopefully they come out rested because they're not playing the Royals and Pirates anymore.
  22. The Marlins are leading the N.L. East 2 @ .875.
  23. 5:04pm: MLB will postpone this weekend’s Cards-Cubs series, Joel Sherman of the New York Post reports.
  24. luck Dodgers seem to have a good handle on it as well. I will say this I bet the Venn Diagram of scouts, coaches, players, and FO that dont believe in analytics & sabermetrics would overlap pretty well with the population that doesnt believe in masks & think Covid is a hoax. No surprise that a Friedman or Epstein led franchise would take this seriously. I don't think analytics and sabermetrics has anything to do with the Covid outbreak, especially when you see half the Cubs without masks talking in the dugout.
