  1. He will be too expensive for us
  2. I'd rather do Taijuan Walker and re-sign Quintana. Also, picking up Trevor Cahill on the cheap would add some insurance for the rotation and long relief.
  3. From MLBTR: The Seattle Mariners outrighted three relievers to Triple-A, the team announced. Matt Magill, Carl Edwards Jr., and Nestor Cortes Jr. each elected free agency. The Mariners have 7 open spots on their 40-man roster. Edwards lost it in 2019, but pitched well in limited appearances in 2020. Might be worth looking at.
  4. Do you really think Theo is going to trade 3 or 4 of Amaya, Hoerner, Marquez, Caratini, and Davis for 1 year of Lindor? Also, What would PTR think of adding $20 million to the payroll for 2021 and hundreds of millions in extensions after that? Is going? Eh, Indians have to agree. Is willing? Sure and "dad's gonna be pissed if this doesn't work" Again, it's hard to predict anything until we see what other trades Theo makes (Bryant, Schwarber, etc.) and what they get in return because Lindor can't fill all of the holes that need to be filled. As for "dad's gonna be pissed if this doesn't work", I don't think "dad" would approve the deal unless Theo saved that much after filling out the rest of the roster.
  5. They were mentioned as one of 11 teams that might have interest in Lindor. Of course, most of the other teams actually have either: (1) a bigger need at SS, (2) the prospects needed to complete a trade, (3) an owner willing to spend the money to keep Lindor. You think too highly of other teams and their owners! Baez would move. Teams I'd eliminate among those 11 before the Cubs: Reds - Their big rental was Bauer, light on prospects Blue Jays - In play for basically all the FAs, meh on their presence in trades Twins - Just not happening Phillies - Don't have the prospects, likely only an opportunistic FA spender this offseason (Semien?) Dodgers - Placed in by media because Dodgers, but Seager/Lux already has the kind of upside up the middle to keep them spectators and their top prospects after Lux are meh Do you really think Theo is going to trade 3 or 4 of Amaya, Hoerner, Marquez, Caratini, and Davis for 1 year of Lindor? 6. Fun fact: Hoyer planned to take Lindor at 10 i 2011, flew out to see him https://nypost.com/2016/10/23/when-baseball-world-descended-on-hs-showdown-javier-baez-vs-lindor/ They were mentioned as one of 11 teams that might have interest in Lindor. 7. I wouldn't trade Contreras unless it was an offer that couldn't be refused. With the DH, both catchers can get lots of playing time. Bryant & Schwarber will save the most in money and Bryant should get a decent return (even after a bad year).
  8. PTR is just gonna promote the leftovers up a spot so he only has to hire a low level scout. The best outcome would be for Jason McLeod to find his long foretold GM position. The Cubs would surely allow him out of his contract, which would actually free up money for the front office. I still have hopes that Theo is waiting to step aside if the Cubs can land a GM like Jared Porter this offseason. The best outcome would be for some club to take Theo and give us a really good compensation player. Nothing would dramatically change in the FO and Hoyer could then work on the trades that need to happen with one hole in the roster possibly filled.
  9. He would be a good fit. It's hard to make predictions on who to sign, how much money we have to spend, etc. when it looks likely that we may trade 2 of Bryant/Schwarber/Contreras and what the return might be. Obviously trades would free up some more money, but might also fill 1-2 holes with young players which would switch the financial priorities.
  10. The MLBPA protects players from having 2020 stats used in arbitration, but this guy gets fired for taking the WS farther than expected and finishing with a better record than the Cubs. The shocking thing is that Cooper was fired because Reinsdorf is noted for loyalty.
  11. Cot's has them $104 million under the non-adjusted 2020 payroll with the following players up for arbitration: Caratini Happ Winkler Ryan Almora Martinez Contreras Schwarber Baez Bryant Tepera Rae I can see raises going to Caratini, Happ, Winkler, maybe Ryan, Tepera, but all of them probably would get slight raises because of their low salaries. Obviously, Contreras would get a decent raise, but the big salary guys (Schwarber, Baez, Bryant) should lose in arbitration after their performances this year. I would think there's some money to make some mid-level additions, but convincing PTR of that is another story.
  12. This could be a way to improve the Cubs. Get a top young player as compensation from the receiving team for Theo and bring in someone younger and cheaper to replace him. Let the new guy decide which of the core players to trade to add to the youth movement. Making that one big trade, signing a mid-priced FA (Cesar Hernandez ?). and the compensation player could go pretty far in keeping them competitive while getting younger.
  13. Obviously, Lemahieu would be a great addition, but where are we getting the money to sign him?
  14. Theo would have to find some other team(s) willing to ignore this years stats while trading 1 or 2 of the core players. I don't think Baez or Rizzo are going anywhere and I'm not sure what Bryant and/or Schwarber would get in return. Contreras/Caratini would bring something of value because of their position.
  15. You better sample size that horsefeathers. Quick like. I said "with the Cubs".
  16. More hitters like Billy Hamilton - .300/.364/.600/.964 with the Cubs.
  17. Maybe we ought to be replacing the hitting coach too.
  18. Segura has an extra year at almost $15 million, so that doesn't neutralize the contracts.
  19. Nobody is denying that hitting a baseball is very hard, but these are elite athletes that have been doing this all of their lives and probably made contact, hit the other way, and hit for a high average for many of those years. Look at how many players have changed their swing the last few years to hit more HRs to the detriment of average and contact.
  20. They really need to find hitters that can adapt. These guys have been playing baseball all of their lives and many of given up trying to make contact so they can swing for the fences. It's fun watching the towering homers, but MLB has gotten to the point where there are very few pure "hitters" instead of sluggers. Making contact seems headed for extinction while we watch games with 10+ strikeouts and wait for the occasional HR.
  21. Obviously, the Cubs needed pitching when they made the trade, but Eloy will always be valuable as long as the DH exists. Also, Schwarber was pretty bad in the OF at the start of his career. Can Eloy improve defensively? I doubt it, but he's a monster with the bat.
  22. He just turned 32 and last year he only managed a 101 wRC+, hard to be very confident of much future value since he is poison with a glove in his hand. If we are gonna throw out this weird year as not being the norm moving forward for him, his ~150 wRC+ vs lefties and ~110 vs RHP career still plays with the DH around. Sure not super valuable, but it certainly helps. Especially over 162 games next year if you assume he’s going to be closer to his career norms. Is it safe to think there will be 162 games next year?
  23. The way things are going, we might need his bat. =D> Agreed. Now if only we could figure out who to give it to. We're last in the NL for strikeouts, so maybe some of our bats might be defective.
  24. The way things are going, we might need his bat. =D>
  25. From MLBTR: Cubs To Sign Pedro Strop
