  1. I seem to remember always hearing that breaking ball pitchers always faired worse in the dry Arizona air since the ball doesn't have as much movement. Is this something that has affected Hill in past spring trainings? Does anyone remember how he pitched last year in ST? Hill was bouncing curveballs in the dirt 5 feet in front of the plate last ST. It was enough to cost him a spot in the rotation.
  2. Yeah, push the "promising" youngster and let the overpaid, non-promising veterans start. Brilliant insight. I'm waiting to hear from Bruce about the Hill situation. These other "reporters" suck. Fact is so intermingled with speculation you have to read multiple sources just to figure out what's really going on.
  3. Why did we get Cotts again? Does he have options left?
  4. Me too, but I've heard this song before.
  5. Prior is going to beat some arse this season.
  6. I thought it was just a pure signability issue. Our scout just stuck with him and got him to sign.
  7. head down. eye on the ball. kid's got skills. 8-) His hips are too open and there's way too much of an uppercut. :) Harsh.
  8. Gallagher is turning out to be quite the steal in Round 12. Kid's a gamer.

  10. It'd be pretty tricky to deal Z right now. If the trades fell through or the rumors reached the public or Z, we'd probably lose him to FA next season. He's pretty emotional and prideful. I was all for trading Z when it was rumored he wanted Zito money and years, but if he only wants near Zito money for 5 years, I think we just have to take the injury risk b/c we can't wait for the prospects to develop in present circumstances. I do think Z would bring a nice haul in prospects though.
  11. I could see Theriot putting up .290/.350/.380/.730 this season. DeRosa will outperform him by a good bit, so I don't think he will get the starting job. But Theriot is definitely worthy of playing time in a utility role if his defense holds up. Cedeno shouldn't even sniff the big league team after the poor performance last season both defensively and offensively.
  12. I don't know that I can argue and that doesn't make me happy. Just use the stat that batters swing at his first pitch 70% of the time. It's actually 115%. They swing so hard they go around twice. Helicopter action.
  13. He looks like he did when he first came up. Amazing how dropping a few pounds can take the years off. Dude was never that skinny. You don't think so? http://www.homeruncards.com/imagesrc/kerry-wood-bow.jpg Not in the body. His legs look really thin. Hendry also said he weighs less now than when he first came up.

  15. Muskat said the rotation was Z/Lilly/Marquis with everyone else competing for the other 2 spots. link Yes, and that's Muskat, who's probably the worst possible source. Wait til we actually hear from Piniella or Hendry about it, otherwise it's very hard to distinguish between what reporters may have heard and what their best(read: terrible) guess is as to who is a "rotation lock". I hope you're right. Muskat's said Hill was a near lock for the rotation a couple weeks ago and now a question mark. I can't believe Hill peed in someone's Cheerios this early, so her inconsistency might just be b/c of opinion instead of actual reporting.

  17. I just listened to the audio clip and Mussina didn't say anything too bad. He didn't pull a Sheffield.
  18. $$$. There's no way Hendry is going to admit a mistake before the season even starts. Maybe a few months down the road, but not so soon. With that said, it hasn't happened yet. But it will. Prior won't be the one left out if he's healthy, though. There's still a chance that honor goes to Hill, although Guzman most likely be a very happy camper come late March. I wasn't too mad about the Marquis contract at the time, but if Hill gets left off the opening day roster, I'm going to reverse field. Hendry said the best 11/12 pitchers would make the team. We'll see if he was full of it or not.
  19. Hey, somebody's gotta be the new whipping boy. I think Marquis is going to win that role in a landslide.
  20. How in bleeps name does Marquis get locked into a rotation spot after throwing up a 6.02 ERA? The only 2 guys that should have locked rotation spots are Z and Lilly. Then it should go Hill, Prior, Marquis, Marshall, Miller, and Guzman (in order of deservedness) fighting it out for the other 3 spots. Muskat says he rotation is Z/Lilly/Marquis and Prior, Miller, and Hill fighting it out for the last two spots. Freaking ridiculous. I find it hard to believe that Prior can be kept from the rotation if he's healthy. He's one of the most talented pitchers in his generation. Miller vs. Hill, Round 1.
  21. http://blogs.trb.com/sports/custom/weblog/wgnsports/ Love the fan who didn't know who Soriano was... He knew him -- he used to watch him when he was with the Expos. But when you were with the Expos you were shorter and white. What gives, brotha?
