  1. no will clark?
  2. You have no idea what Hendry will or won't do, unless you have some personal relationship with Jim that I'm unaware of? Dealing Pie in a package for a player like Abreu should be a no-brainer. I know I'm going to get killed for this, but so be it. Why are we anxious to trade a 20 year old centerfielder who scouts well and put up a .903 OPS in Double-A at age 20 for a 32 year old rightfielder who couldn't get his OPS over .900 last season playing in one of the best offensive parks in the National League, posted a .787 OPS after the All-Star break, and is due $30 million over the next two seasons? And not only him, but other valuable players, too? Goodness gracious. I agree. I also don't think the Cubs would give up 4 young players to get him. The loss of Pie, Williams, Nova, and Wuertz (as someone suggested) would hurt the Cubs more in the long run. On the other hand, I see the Lidge deal as more of an equal value trade. Lidge will be 30 next year. this would be a foolish deal for the phillies. I'm not sure they would see it that way however.

  4. I thought someone might have. So, I'm thinking we'll want to go to the early game Saturday and the final - probably. That would leave you two tickets for the early game, 4 for the late game, and two for the final. Does that work for you? I haven't run this by the wife or grandma yet though so I may have to change my plans. In fact, I'm thinking maybe the wife and I should have a night out on Saturday instead - just not sure grandma can handle getting the baby to sleep.
  5. Am I mistaken or didn't they ask for Guzman first from that Boise team? And I know a couple people who predicted Willis' success before he was traded. oh if only MacPhail/Hendry caved on Guzman. but then again, they are supposed to be clairvoyant. Why go here. Nobody has said any such thing. While there is no requirement to be an oracle while holding a MLB organizational position, it is incumbent, particularly from the GM, that a pattern doesn't develop wherein talent is continually forfeit without proper return. That is all anyone is saying. on the other hand, if one challenges the existence of said pattern, as I and others do above, a lively quip, to emphasize the rarity of said organization forfeiting without proper return and to note that said GM is human, is not out of bounds. indeed, but for this one transaction, one would have a difficult time arguing said GM ever made a bad trade. are you posting in iambic pentameter? That would be impressive.
  6. The key is you have to stop the run first.
  7. yea, then next year we can sit him on the bench and let him bat only against the other teams closer so we can destroy his value and then trade him! yea, ok, too cynical.
  8. what's mizzou? Never heard of it. :)
  9. its not "on" until January 5.
  10. he seems to be getting nicer actually.
  11. They can certainly sign a contract - not sure if it can be lower but I don't see why not (nor do I see why a player would agree to it unless it is a multi-year deal). Hendry and MacPhail have never gone to arbitration as I recall.
  12. You are correct that murton needs to hit for the offense to be successful. what I don't agree with is the dangerous assumption because it implies we should look at other options. this team has enough other holes to fill to not worry about murton. if necesaary, they can make an in-season trade but at this time I think Hendry shouldn't be worrying about murton nearly so much as RF.
  13. this thread should be titled put corey in RF and play for 2007
  14. Two things are certain: 1) Pierre is nowhere close to the best leadoff hitter in baseball 2) Carpenter was not lucky in 2005 and similar results can be expected. That being said, had the Cubs made a couple good acquisitions this winter, the Cardinals would be catchable. Looks to me like neither Houston or Chicago has stepped to the plate this winter so far though. At best we can hope for a four team dogfight.
  15. I'm pretty sure you can be tendered a contract offer and still re-sign a contract without going to arbitration. So there is no need to non-tender a player to re-sign him at lower price if he agrees to it.
  16. So who's playing 3b and what happens when Izturis comes back?
  17. I only believe them when reported by Len Kasper on the Cubs.com message board and sometimes DaveMason2K. What about dovemason2k? :D
  18. That's fine - I really don't care other than I get sick of reading pages of interrogation. Its a rumor on a message board - does anyone really believe any of them?
  19. Obviously he didn't elaborate - doesn't that answer the question? While I often disagree with Don, he certainly never seemed the type to spout out and out lies. In any case, it doesn't matter - can't we just discuss the proposal?
  20. This kind of puts Hendry in a position to decide if his team is a 2006 contender or not. If not, he can't trade Hill for Huff. Thus, I would trade Guzman but not Hill. At this point, I don't see Huff putting the cubs over the top. so lets have a gameplan for 2007. 2006 can be used to find out if Cedeno and Murton can get it done and bring Pie along. Lets see what Hill can do. Lets see what Wuertz can do in pressure situations. Lets get Wood healthy and extended (if healthy). I have a sinking feeling the Cubs have moved into a position where they try to compete every year and thus prevent themselves from ever competing. Sometimes you have to build for the next year.
  21. If the cubs trade walker to the cardinals that would certainly seal the deal on this offseason.
  22. Who frickin' cares? Can you imagine Christ worrying about something like this?
  23. from Stark's column http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/columns/story?columnist=stark_jayson&id=2261063 To be honest," said one front-office man, "Rich Hill is worth a lot more than that. Everyone in baseball was asking about Rich Hill at the winter meetings. So he's not getting traded for a fourth outfielder." and for good humor - and I have to ask - would you make this trade if you are either team? I would like to see JOHAN SANTANA TRADED TO THE CARDINALS FOR ALBERT PUJOLS. I think Pujols is the most overrated player in the history of baseball. I live in St. Louis and I watch Pujols choke more in clutch situations than any other player on the team. I want the Cardinals to get rid of his salary and start to play some other bum in his position! What are the chances of this trade going through???"
