Are they still considering the Marlins a minor-league team in the majors? His 1st appearance was against Boston College. Yeah, I know. I just found it funny that ESPN, obviously a typo, refered to the Marlins as "Major-Leaguie" hitters. Their major leaguers... but not so much

If you go to ESPN's MLB home page the top headline right now is "Matsuzaka holds Marlins scoreless in three-inning debut" But if you hold the mouse over it it gives you ap review and it says Are they still considering the Marlins a minor-league team in the majors?

Are you playing with a bunch of homers to their own teams? Teahen, Kinsler, Gordon, etc... they all went fairly early/middle of the draft in our league. Gordon and Kendrick because they're young and inexperienced, and somewhat Kinsler I can see getting disregarded, but Teahen? I guess playing on the majors' most ignored team helps out fantasy wise :)

All the cool kids are doing it... rate my team?

10 teams. It's the beginners league for NSBB that's being talked about a lot here. I did stack up on 3B inadvertantly, partially due to the SS/OF Bill Hall confusion. I drafted Atkins to be my starter at 3B, and had the intention on using rotation of Teahen/Upton/Helton at the UTIL spot depending on how they were performing. Then again I just realized that Upton is a backup to their new Japanese 3B, and he's also the backup SS to Zobrist who is a AVG and OBP stud. I may need to drop Upton, as he's not an opening starter on their depth chart right now. Idiot me. And yeah, my OF really is weak. If Griffey is healthy and Delmon Young hits like he should it could be a solid power OF, but not the best. Then again, remember I got Bill Hall in the OF once they switch his position status. So it'd likely be Hall/Young/Griffey, which is kinda potent. -
They actually went a lot earlier in the draft than one might have expected

Even though I like to consider myself seasoned in the fantasy baseball department, I still love to hear constructive criticism or hell, even evil hate-mongering criticism (it makes me laugh on the inside)... C Ramon Hernandez 1B David Ortiz 2B Chase Utley SS Bill Hall OF Delmon Young OF Ryan Freel OF Ken Griffey, Jr. UTIL Todd Helton BN Mark Teahen, Jorge Posada, Troy Tulowitzki, B.J. Upton, Andre Ethier SP Roy Oswalt SP Matt Cain RP Francisco Rodriguez RP Huston Street P Justin Verlander P Chris Capuano P Bob Wickman BN Ian Snell NOTES: - This is listed as how Yahoo put them, and is not a reflection of how I will have them as a starting lineup - Yahoo doesn't have Bill Hall penciled in as an OF'er, which is the position for which I drafted him Stuff I like about it: - Jorge Posada and Ramon Hernandez were practically the same guy last year. It's eerie. And I got Posada in the later rounds. - I like my closers (still iffy on Wickman though, I think he'll lose the job to Gonzalez eventually for some reason) - I like the upside of all the young players, although the downside could be a lot worse. Stuff I don't like - I don't like having one spare pitcher. I should've drafted at least another in exchange for one of my bench offensive guys - I don't like that Yahoo left Bill Hall as a SS. It kind of screwed up my drafting by telling me I had enough SS, even though I had no SS, because I drafted Hall for the OF. I eventually had to get Tulowitzki, who I was goingt odraft anyways, but he will probably be my starting SS. - I don't like having a lack of speed outside of Freel. God knows if Upton will last in the majors, and even if he does, will I want to replace Atkins or the UTIL spot with him?

As a participant in your league, you probably should go ahead and drop Howry and Wood, honestly. Wood might be a stretch to keep, but Howry will be worthless in fantasy. As a middle reliever the only positive things he can bring is K's, since his ERA/WHIP will not be relevant enough to bring down your overall ERA and WHIP due to lack of innings pitched. As far as RP's are concerned, you want closers. I say keep Wood as a stretch because he might be next in line for the closers spot, and he also may be good for 5-8 K's a week, which some starter's can't even achieve, maybe more if he regains form and is used a few times a week. But yeah, you should probably drop Howry and look for a closer alternative, and it looks like Octavio Dotel is the only choice. While he's coming off injuries, and he's playing for the Royals, he'll likely help you out a little more than Howry will since the difference in a save can mean the winning of a category whereas the difference in an ERA is rarely close week-by-week. WHIP and ERA's rarely ever come down to a tenth of a point. Usually one team has a full number lower than the loser of the category. That plus Dotel is penciled in as the Royals closer and there's no other RP available on the FA market that has that attributed to them Other stuff: 1) You probably got one of speediest outfields in the game, which is always nice to have. Not only that but you can work it around to get a little bit of pop when you need it with Alou and Murton on the bench. Other than that Pierre, Beltran, and Abreu is a well balanced OF as far as speed and run production is concerned. 2) Konerko and Ramirez will produce for you, but coming from someone who has had Aramis on all 4 of his fantasy teams prior to this league, he will come in stretches of amazing superhuman hitting ability, and Neifi Perez hitting ability. But his overall production combined with Konerko's will give your IF good power, while Furcal and Weeks will supply a decent amount of SB's and Barrett will (knock on Wood) provide good balance in the AVG/HR/RBI department. Your IF is solid. Not the best, not the worst. But it'll hold you over. 3) Your SP is probably your 2nd weakest component of your team behind your relief pitching. You can count on Matsuzaka to at least provide some wins with that potent Red Sox lineup. You can count on Dontrelle being Dontrelle. As we all know you can't count on Mark Prior, but he's a risk move with huge upside. Clemens, he definitely won't pitch until AS break and such, if he pitches at all, another huge risk move with big upside. Problem with him is you can't use him for a loooong time. Maddux is reliable for 10+ wins, but he's obviously seen better days. Marquis is, well, Marquis. I sure hope he does good (on weeks I don't play you and games the Cubs score 16 runs), but who knows with him, he's rather inconsistent and sketchy. 4) The BP needs major re-working. You may need to trade one of your players for a middle-of-the-road closer. Dempster could be a total nut job again and post a horrible season, causing him to lose the job to, for your sake, Kerry Wood. Or he could go back to 2005 form, which is great. If the Indians play how critics say they should, Borowski could be a great pick-up assuming he stays healthy, and if the Indians are successful that could spell 35+ saves again. Howry, like I said, dump him. Personally I like having three solid closers on my team. By last year's stats I got those 3 (Rodriguez, Street, Wickman) but I don't have a lot of faith in Wickman because he's old and... well, he's fat... and Mike Gonzalez is better than him in my opinion and he's right behind him in Atlanta. Having consistent closers ensures you'll get a great ERA, WHIP and a few saves out of them each week. You, however, have 1 good closer in Borowski. Dempster is an unsure thing. My suggestion to you is see if you're willing to part with one of your larger, yet, expendable offensive players for a nice consistent closer. Maybe dangle Abreu or Pierre for a closer. I figure at least Abreu can net you at least a Chris Ray, Trevor Hoffman, or a Chad Cordero (EDIT: Maybe even better than them), and you can replace Abreu with Murton or Alou, who can probably match Abreu's declining power numbers, although you'd have to sacrifice his RBI's and SB's. But by doing that you create a stronger bullpen that, honestly, without a closer better than Borowski, will likely get slaughtered in the SV department each week, no offense. I did the same thing in my first league. I didn't think saves would be that big a deal, but they crushed me. I actually think I only drafted one closer... MISTAKE! Anyways, that's my 2 cents, and as a fellow participant and opponent in your league, I still like helping out with whatever information I think is useful. It is a beginner's league after all :)

I'm guessing Santana was pick #1 and Carpenter was probably pick #3 or #4, with one of Morneau, Lee, or Bay being the #2 pick (just guessing) Usually pitchers like Santana go in the first round and no one else. A couple years ago guys like Santana, Schilling, and RJ would go in the first round or two, but now it's really just Santana. Most of the 2nd rate top-tier pitchers like Carpenter, Big Z, Webb, etc. usually go in the 3rd or 4th rounds, sometimes 2nd. It's nearly impossible to find a guy who is a pretty much a guaranteed lock for at least 16 wins and 230+K's and an ERA under 2.90. It's not uncommon to find guys who you can count on for 15 or so wins, a 3.00-4.00ERA and 180-200 strikeouts. When those are the best guys available, you'll likely want to boost your offense a little more, since there's a little more of an abundance to choose from, whereas there is no other pitcher quite like Johan Santana. Turnb back the clock about 3 years and then you have Schilling and RJ who are churning out Santana-esque numbers and then you got some leeway and pitchers like them would typically go in the late 1st round/early 2nd round, because people knew that if they lost out on one, they could still hold out hope of getting the other and instead draft someone like Manny, A-Rod, Vlad, etc. In other news, I have no idea why I went on this tangent. In my league. P and OF players went equally in the first round. With names like Santana, Carpenter, Zambrano, coupled with A-rod, Cabrera, and Pujouls. I nabbed Beltran and A. Ramirez in my first round. And nabbed Matsuzaka as my BEST pitcher. For me, I've got a good offense. But I have questionable pitching, but with great upside. Yes, I know. I'm in your league :D I'm "Neifi's B-Team" Also, I was wrong about the draft picks... curses!

You got a handful of the same players I got, so naturally I'm going to say your team is part of the greatest team ever assembled :D Honestly though, I noticed a lot of people are taking Zumaya. Is he projected to take over the closer roll if Jones messes up, or are people just mooching off his K's?

Hank Blalock and Johnny Peralta went in the final 22nd round of our league. I kow they're not Top 10 round players, but I figure they wouldn't be last resort picks. I took Griffey in the 18th round. I know he's a risk, but he's probably got the best upside of any of the offensive risk picks in the entire league. As long as he plays he'll produce, and since I got him late I've got good options to replace him with if he injures himself or doesn't perform. I was kinda peeved that they didn't have Bill Hall listed as an OF'er, which if I'm not mistaken is what he'l be playing this year. That kinda f'd up my draft, Yahoo has him listed as SS & 3B, and during my drafting it said I needed some OF'ers and I had forgot that I had drafted him for the OF, since it was coming up as a SS, and I had neglected SS and instead overstocked on OF until about the 17th/18th round. That kinda pissed me off

Fantasy baseball league for (mostly) new players?
tkenm356 replied to MPrior's topic in Fantasy Sports
I don't think so. I've never seen or heard of a site like that. But, as fun as it is to rate your team after a draft, I wouldn't put much stock into that rating. Things always look much different in September than they did in March. Very true. My first two years playing fantasy baseball I was pretty much last by the all star break then all of a sudden my team tuyrned it around and i came in like 4th and 3rd -

Is there a certain place we need to go to do the live draft? Will it be like a chat room type thing with a list or will it be e-mail notifications? Also, how long do we have to take our picks? I've never done a live Yahoo draft before. I don't want to misso ut on being in a specific place at the right time and end up having my pre-drafts go into effect, especially since I'm not making any -

I'd rate your team a B-/B, but I'm assuming you have a lot of teams in your league. I've only played in 8 team leagues, and most of the teams have at least 2 great SP, one great closer, and 2-3 great hitters. Your lineup looks scattered as far as star talent is concerend, that's why I'm assuming there's a lot of teams that swiped up all the star players quick. You have a nice pitching staff with Carpenter, Papelbon, Nathan. And a decent offense that has a few sure things (Manny, Dunn, Youkalis), but it's going ot rely heavily on the hope that the youth movement picks up and doesn't decline. As far as I can tell anyways. Nice team!

what's funny is that he reminds me of bagwell there. Yeah, me too. It was kinda creepy seeing this pic with Bagwell's just happening to be right above it. I'll take Bagwell numbers out of Murton any day :) Minus the roids of course [rimshot] -
I think it serves its purpose quite well... I say this cause I had no idea he was black. I always thought Donald Veal was a white, perhaps I should pay attention to more than just the numbers in our farm system
