  1. Even if true, that's a bit harsh, isn't it? I've never heard Barrett speak and thought to myself, "he's a total moron." I don't necessarily think he was talking about his overall intelligence, just his baseball intelligence. His instincts are pretty bad on the field, and he doesn't seem to take into account the score or spot in the game either. We've seen numerous examples this year-Barrett is the worst of all the Cubs at swinging at the first pitch for a guy who's walked the previous couple guys, his throwing behind the runner, trying to steal 3rd with 2 outs, the list could go on.
  2. Derrek Lee with runners in scoring position this year-.467/.538/.778 I can think of 3 situations just in the last week and a half where he has done the job-the grand slam against the White Sox, and the single to give the Cubs the 1-0 against the Dodgers in the 8th on Sunday. Plus, he had the single yesterday in the 9th to bring up Ramirez with a chance to win the game. Lee has definitely not had a problem in clutch situations.
  3. I believe you meant corner infielder or outfielder, and the answer is no, the team does not need another one of those. They desperately need 1 hitter up the middle, because between C, 2B, SS, and CF, they have 7 players, and only 1 of them is hitting well (DeRosa).
  4. Agreed-this team can't afford to be any more patient with him. If he refuses to go on the DL, and refuses to go on the minors, then he has to be released.
  5. Wasn't Pagan brought in because a left-hander was on the mound when he was announced, and then Lou didn't want to simply waste him and pinch-hit for the pinch-hitter? Who cares its the 9th inning and you have 2 runners on. You use your best ph in that situation to get the lineup to roll over and get to the top. Who cares if you "waste" Pagan, they wasted Ward by not using our best Ph in the most crucial PH spot. I'm just saying that Lou has used his bench like that for most of the season, and then people get upset when most of the bench is gone during extra innings. I would have pinch-hit Ward there myself, but it seems like most people are very worried about running out of players (which I am not) and using two pinch-hitters for the same spot doesn't help in running out of players.
  6. Wasn't Pagan brought in because a left-hander was on the mound when he was announced, and then Lou didn't want to simply waste him and pinch-hit for the pinch-hitter? then why not bring in Murton? Pagan has been pretty cold since the first game of the White Sox series. Murton has been better over the last week or so. Either way it's bad. Murton pinch-hit in the seventh.
  7. Bases loaded in San Diego, 1 out - GIDP 1st and Third in LA, 0 out, fails to make solid contact, runner is held at third Cubs don't score. I could point out several of those cases for Theriot as well-or Cedeno, who was much worse than Izturis: As a SS this year: Izturis-.271/.333/.331 Theriot-.206/.341/.235 Cedeno-.091/.130/.273 Overall Theriot-.278/.343/.338 Izturis-.267/.328/.325 Cedeno: .097/.121/.323 SS as a whole has been a problem for the Cubs this year-not any individual player. Theriot has a 28 point advantage over Izturis in OPS-that's not a very large difference. Any of the Cubs SS is not the reason we are terrible. That's true. SS is actually right about where it's expected to be, maybe even a little bit better. Barrett being terrible, Jones being terrible, Murton/Floyd both being below average, Soriano with the power, and the bullpen are all underperforming what they were expected to do.

  10. DeRosa has proven he should play every day. Theriot simply has not whatsoever. His average is down to .273, his OBP is proabbly under .340 now, and he has no power.
  11. He's not slumping a little-he's slumping bigtime. 1 for his last 13 with 1 walk, and 6 for his last 35 with 2 walks during that span and only 1 extra base hit (and he already was trending downward slightly before that). He needs to hit down in the lineup until he can turn this around.
  12. Lineups Cubs Soriano-LF Floyd-RF Lee-1B Ramirez-3B Barrett-C Jones-CF DeRosa-2B Theriot-SS Marshall-P Marlins Abercrombie-CF Uggla-2B Ramirez-SS Cabrera-3B Willingham-LF Hermida-RF Wood-1B Treanor-C Kim-P
  13. SOMEBODY TEACH BARRETT A LITTLE SPANISH I actually read that quote and was quite pleased with that move. I'm not sure it will help Z much (it might a little bit, but it's a very small variable) but the team really needs Barrett's bat in the game whenever Hill, Lilly, or Marshall pitches (to make up for their horrible pitcher bats). Considering Blanco is going to play 1 out of every 5 or so days anyway, making him Z's personal catcher is the best solution.
  14. One question answered-Barrett stealing 3rd was all him, not Piniella at all: http://chicago.cubs.mlb.com/news/gameday_recap.jsp?ymd=20070526&content_id=1987957&vkey=recap&fext=.jsp&c_id=chc
  15. Ramirez pinch-hitting was the best move. Lou couldn't win there either, because there were several people in the game thread calling him several different names if he didn't PH with Ramirez there. What better situation can you put your biggest hitter on the bench in then bases loaded in the late innings? Ok, I understand that. But why not leave him in the game at 3B after that AB? Lou was giving him a day off. Typically, a guy who is getting a scheduled day off like that is available to pinch-hit if needed, but Lou didn't really want him playing any innings unless it was an emergency (which it wasn't) or else the day off would have been wasted.
  16. That's the one I just don't understand-there is simply no reason for him to be in the game there until he shows that he has started to pitch better in blowout games, which he hasn't done.

  18. bunting with your cleanup hitter. Trying to steal 3rd with 2 outs. Id really like to know if the steal sign was on or not. I have to think it was because I really dont think Barret would just steal 3rd with 2 out like that Did Murton try to steal with him? If not, I doubt the steal sign was on-there would be no reason for Barrett to go and not for Murton to go.
  19. So because the bullpen sucks, Lou must walk on eggshells and bring in the exact perfect person or he's an idiot? The perfect person of course being Howry or Ohman, every single time. Never mind that a strategy like that will send those 2 to the DL by July. This makes no sense. Eyre sucks, he's on the team. Either get him off the team, or Lou will have to use him. Period, end of story. There is no reason at all to bring Eyre in with the game so close. Just leave Wuertz in he can get lefties out to just in case you or Lou hasnt noticed. I wouldn't have put Eyre in there either, but Ohman has been better pitching to right-handers than Wuertz has been pitching to left-handers the past three years. Why is it so bad for Ohman to pitch to an occasional right-hander, but Lou is called out if he doesn't leave Wuertz in to face every left-hander?
  20. My hope is that it was just in case the pitcher's spot came up that inning. Guzman should pitch this inning now, and then be pinch hit for.
  21. 1 win-the game against Washington at home. Yup. Game 3 sweep. I was there, and I won tickets to it. That was the Ward hit over the leftfielder, right? Yup-that was the ballgame all right.
  22. Yep. Glad he's not starting. In the past week, I've watched the game threads. The couple times Guzman has done well, people complained that he was doing well in the bullpen and therefore he should be starting. When he did poorly Friday night, people complained that he did poorly therefore he should be starting. I guess it's a no win :D
  23. 1 win-the game against Washington at home.
  24. No need for patience right there. He got a pitch he liked and hit it to the wall Patience is NEVER a bad thing, IMO. It was the guys first pitch in the game. I agree patience is never bad, however with Aram he got a pitch he liked and drove it cant really complain. On NSBB, there's always a reason to complain. It's in the User Agreement. It's basic baseball. No reason not to take the first pitch in that situation. It's not like the guy grooved a fastball, IIRC. Eh, whatever. I just rewatched it-a fastball right down the middle. Ramirez hit the best pitch he was going to see in that at-bat.
