  1. I'm sorry. In all seriousness though which farm did you grow up on? I grew up in the town of Fowler, so I wasn't on a farm but I have several friends who do. I am Bubba's year, but I am at Notre Dame. Every year I normally go back over x-mas break for a game in the paint crew. One of my good friends from BC who is my neighbor is actually dating Bobby Riddell. ha. Nonetheless, I am really excited for Purdue bball this year. It's also weird to think that we have the preseason player of the year on our team. We don't have much of a supporting cast, but hopefully one of the freshman can step up and play a decent-sized role. Not to derail the thread, but does 98.1 WIBN still exist out there?
  2. I never got why people praised the network all summer. I gave up on it in spring training. It's a PR machine. Everybody is above average. I like it for the live look-ins and the out-of market games. Their baseball tonight is as bad as baseball tonight. Same here. I'll keep it on just for the score updates and live look-ins, especially if the Cubs aren't on WGN.
  3. For selfish reasons, I want them to stay put in Arizona. I have a lot of family out there. As my kids grow up, I'd like to be able to take them to spring training AND see some family all in one trip.
  4. You see that at every game for any team. That's not a Cubs-specific thing.
  5. I think it's a little too early to tell how his personal style of hitting will translate into what type of hitting coach he is. I highly doubt he's going to try to turn guys like Skip Schumaker and Brendan Ryan into power hitters. A person's career numbers are not a good indicator of what type of hitting coach he'll be. Fun fact: Gerald Perry was a .265 career hitter in the majors...a whopping two points higher than McGwire. On top of that, he didn't possess nearly the patience nor the power that McGwire had. Would you label Perry as a bad hitting instructor?
  6. He was a roided up power hitter whose OBP was inflated by pitchers not wanting to throw him strikes. His OBP was high because he was a patient hitter who waited for a pitch he could drive. The guy drew 96 walks in 596 plate appearances his first full season in the minors. He drew 88 walks in 579 plate appearances the following year. I'm not denying the fact that many pitchers pitched around him due to his power, but patience was a big part of his approach from the beginning.
  7. It is a good move. Although, I would have bet money that they were going to take Valentine instead.
  8. I highly doubt it. Molock is in the 2012 class, Randle the 2011. Randle's class is the important one because that is when Hummel, Moore and Johnson all leave. We need to get some scorers in that class that can contribute right away. Also Painter is the one recruiting Randle and he only goes for the top recruits that he wants most. I would be pleasantly surprised if Johnson is back for his senior season.
  9. It's a jock culture, I'm sure there's a lot more unreported cases than reported ones. If you haven't read it, pick up a copy of ESPN: The Uncensored History. Goes into a lot of detail about these kinds of activities. Also makes you wonder how Mike Tirico still has a job.
  10. Because this was consensual. From what I recall, Reynolds' "hug" or whatever the hell it was, was deemed as unwelcome by the recipient.
  11. Still, it's not like the man has a face for radio. He's got to be able to do better than that.
  12. Seeing a picture of the woman just reinforces the thought that Phillips doesn't have an eye for talent.
  13. my plan would be to not do any of those Why? You get your leadoff man, your LH power hitter, someone to platoon with Fukudome in center, and you shore up the bullpen. You're also taking on a crapload of salary. Rowand isn't that good, is owed more than Bradley, and you want to acquire him as a platoon player? Hawpe is due $7.5 million next season. Why spend money on Dotel? Giving Figgins four years OR $10 mil/yr are bad ideas. Offering him both is horrible. That and Smoltz is done, Cashner is nowhere near ready, and Corpas has come crashing back to earth and has his salary going up the next two years. Dotel is probably going to be looking for $5-6mil/year again and is 37. I didn't even see that he had Cashner in the rotation. And Corpas doesn't seem to offer any kind of improvement over what the Cubs already have in the bullpen. Furthermore, where is Wells in all of this? There's no mention of dealing him, yet he doesn't have him penciled into the rotation.

  15. I don't know if I'd trade away Lilly if Harden isn't back. i'd give Marmol one more season before I think about moving him. After what he did in 2008, I can't just give up on him that quickly. Lee I'd trade as an impact 1B bat wouldn't be that hard to find or acquire. Also with your OF trade targets, I assume you move Bradley or Fukudome to make room for one of them? I'd be curious how you're going to convince Lee to waive a no-trade clause that he's pretty much said he won't waive.
  16. That 82 OPS+ is actually pretty impressive for a toddler.
  17. They actually had good talent when they carried the Braves. Since they dumped the Braves, their on-air talent has gone down the crapper.
  18. hell, I'll take #20 overall. It's just another thing texas will cry about I'll take No. 8. We win, just not in the tourney. Well I guess that's not entirely true. We win in the tourney but its one or two games each time. Yeah, Purdue typically does pretty well in the first round. After that, all bets are off though.
  19. that's a good point. but without having done the slightest bit of research, were there a bunch of better options? He actually hit Coghlan in the leadoff spot 106 times and Bonifacio 53 times. That's still 53 times too many for Bonifacio, but once they acquired Johnson to play 1B, he made the smart move by putting Cantu at 3B and benching Bonifacio.
  20. He also played really well for Florida the following season, until they dealt him to LA, where his career died a slow death on the bench.
  21. It has been over a week since a Cubs game was on WGN. Apparently, all those Becker reruns are more important.
  22. More details are needed before drawing that conclusion. If Bradley is getting paid during the suspension, the MLBPA can't file a grievance. I believe it has been stated that he is getting paid during the suspension.
