  1. hahahahahahaha Please tell me you're joking. Yes, I was. There always should be sport where 60 kids do stand around for and scratch their crotch while 11 play. I'll give basketball its kudos it is good for getting HJ, LJ and Trpl J in shape. The rest I am dead serious, especially number 3 After a certain age, most kids don't care for running because it's running, not because some coach is putting a negative spin on it. What happens when a kid is late to a practice, he runs. What happens when he gets a technical in basketball, he runs in practice. Interview any person and they will say they hate running becuase so and so made me running for 30 minutes before or after practice, usually in a some eliptical manner (football field/bb court) Again, they hate running because it's running. I know a lot of people who run regularly to stay in shape. They don't do it because they enjoy it. They do it because they want to stay in shape. Most of them will tell you they don't enjoy it one bit. You know what else makes people hate running? Seeing how people look when they're running. "Oh hey, that guy's been running for 30 minutes. His face is red, he's sweating profusely, and he looks like he's not enjoying it at all. Sign me up for that!!!"
  2. Bradley's not a free agent until after 2011.
  3. To put this in perspective: Hendry: Traded Nolasco, Pinto, and Mitre for one year of Pierre = Poor decision Colletti: Gave Pierre $44 million over five years, with a limited no-trade clause and an opportunity to earn up to $5.25 million more in bonuses, despite having Matt Kemp ready to take over. All of this immediately AFTER Pierre's crappy season with the Cubs. = Mind-numbingly stupid
  4. I'm curious why people don't think Ellsbury is worth keeping. I'm not saying I'm sold on the guy, but steals are a lot harder to come by than homers. The guy is good for at least 50 steals, and if he's batting leadoff for the Sox, he'll score quite a few runs. He'll hit for a solid average, too. At this stage, I'm planning on keeping Halladay, Hernandez, and Longoria at a minimum, with Howard, Ichiro, Ellsbury, and Hanson under consideration for the last two spots. Howard is definitely leading that battle. As far as catchers, I could probably re-draft Geo pretty easily after the season he's had. The bottom three teams probably won't keep more than three players apiece, simply because their rosters are that bad.
  5. Work all offseason on what? If anything, he needs to work on getting his legs healthy. And don't get your hopes up on Soriano being shipped out. I doubt any team is going to take that contract. I don't think finding regular at-bats for Hoffpauir and his .702 OPS should be a priority.
  6. Crap. I'm going to be stuck watching the local broadcast here for all three games, which means having to listen to Rob Dibble.
  7. Just so I'm clear, something that's good physically and socially for kids and is considered far more entertaining by the masses is something you want to scale back? And to compare figure skating and football? Just...wow. At least football requires some strategy. For the most part, track is running hard and turning left, and the short-distance sprinters don't even have to do the turn left part.

  9. Not to discount anything that Dunn has accomplished this season, but hasn't Nationals Park been pretty neutral? RFK was definitely a pitchers' park, but Nationals Park hasn't been nearly as bad for offense as RFK was.
  10. It's a very small sample size, but during this little hot streak (since 8/9), he's 8-for-19 with two doubles and a triple against right-handers. thanks. i was trying to find those numbers and couldn't. I had to use the baseballmusings.com day-to-day database. Took a couple of tries to get the right number of minimum plate appearances for my search. Their day-to-day database kind of helps fill in some gaps where baseball-reference might fall short.

  12. You're completely ignoring the age factor and injury histories of some of the key players on this team. True. But what ya going to do? But I believe their is some gas still left in a lot of those tanks. It all comes down to % chances anyways. Unless the new owner can absorb another 20 or so million. Well, for one thing, you can have Fox work his tail off this offseason on defense. I'm not so much interested in him as a catcher, but if they can become confident enough in his defense to use him a little more in the corner outfield spots and to spell Ramirez from time to time at third, that can help a little in keeping Soriano, Bradley, and Ramirez healthy. Having a strong bench and giving some of these guys regular rest can help. Baker is another guy that could be used in a DeRosa type role, playing some 2B, 3B, and some corner outfield. The Cubs are obviously handcuffed a bit by bloated contracts and no-trade clauses. The best place for improvement is probably the middle infield. However, that's probably the toughest area to find an available impact player.

  14. They need upgraded offense from at least one of (probably more) LF, 2B and/or C next year also. I really don't believe they are a closer away from contending for a WS. Thats not going to happen though. They cant do anything with Soriano. They're going to have to give Soto another year to see if this was just a sophmore slump, and hopefully, he'll play winter ball. As for 2B, I dont know whats really available, so we may as well stick with Baker and Fontenot. The only moves I anticipate are a closer and maybe re signing Harden. Is it really a good idea for a catcher who has been battling nagging injuries all season to be playing winter ball? Catchers tend to age pretty quickly. Let the guy spend the offseason getting healthy and back into shape.
  15. A closer isn't going to help an aging offense. Soriano, Fukudome, Bradley, Ramirez, and Lee are all on the wrong side of 30. While it's certainly possible that Soriano and Bradley will provide better offense in 2010, it's no guarantee. It's also no guarantee that Lee will OPS .900 again. Which Fukudome are we going to see? How will Ramirez' shoulder hold up? Will Soto show up in shape and be able to stay healthy? None of this even begins to touch on the pitching. Getting a closer isn't exactly a cure-all.
  16. Does anyone wear those things any more with Beege and Bonds gone? I see elbow wraps and light pads occasionally, but nothing anywhere close to what either of those two wore. http://www.yardbarker.com/media/e/a/ea9d6eb522036a178a2ced8da7180ed992dcfebb/related/Brewers_vs_Cubs_700d.jpg I think the league is a bit more lenient for pitchers who bat from the opposite side that they throw. I know Zambrano wears one when he's batting left-handed. He may when he bats righty, too, but I haven't really looked.
  17. They should file a grievance.
  18. I think I just read it was in the mid-nineties...so...not bad i suppose... If hes back in the mid 90s and hasnt walked anyone in his rehab, bring him in. Id even be interested in having him back for 1 season next year at a 4-5 mil pricetag. Well, if the contract details posted above are correct, he's owed about $3 million more this season, with a team option of $8 million for next season. If you want to bring him back next year for $4-5 million, you first have to buy him out for $1 million. Even then, he might get a better offer elsewhere.
  19. who was it? Haha, he's talking about Jim Thome. I could understand why you're confused since he got essentially everything wrong in his post. Don't let facts get in your way. 2006-2008: Thome-- 111 HR, 295 RBI, .554 Slugging DLee--- 50HR, 202 RBI, .483 Slugging Easy to slurp up the Hendry Kool-Aid for some. If Thome was a free agent during the 2005 offseason, how the hell did the Phillies manage to trade him to the White Sox? And even if you ignore that, this is every bit as important as the offensive stats you posted: Games played at 1B vs. Games played as DH (since Opening Day 2003, which is important, since the Cubs would have been able to sign him as a free agent the previous offseason): Thome: 346 vs. 411 Lee: 922 vs. 5 Thome wouldn't be putting up those offensive numbers if he was playing 1B everyday. The ability to be a DH saved his career.
  20. Is Wagner a free agent after this season, or does he have another year on his contract? While I'd hate to think what the Cubs would give up in return for Wagner, he's done very well in his rehab, fanning 10, walking none, and allowing three hits in seven innings. Granted, that's at rookie ball and high-A, but it doesn't appear his command has suffered. I'm curious to know what his velocity has been.
  21. There was no top of the 10th to be played, or proceeded onto... Edited: nevermind
  22. Neither has Soriano. Very true.

  24. Hate to tell you, but he didn't suck last year. No, he did not suck last year.....but this year....him and Geo are fighting to be the most worthless player on the team....and that includes Miles Neither of them have come anywhere close to reaching the level of ineptitude that is Aaron Miles. They've also both been better than Fontenot. I'm also of the opinion that Soto hasn't been 100% healthy this year.
  25. Hate to tell you, but he didn't suck last year.
