  1. The Cubs column was good for some rarities. Not sure how I remembered the guy I put in for Seattle/Cleveland, but I did manage to get my best rarity score (34) so far.
  2. Got 8 out of 9 today, but lost a guess because I picked the wrong player with the same name as the right player for one of the squares. Not sure it would have mattered since I couldn't think of anything for that top middle square.
  3. Just desktop. Tweets are always slow to load on desktop. Page becomes unresponsive a few times a week maybe.
  4. Just the tweet portion. But occasionally it takes so long I get a message saying the page has become unresponsive.
  5. Any posts with tweets in them typically take over 15 seconds to load on desktop for me.
  6. Merryweather got off to a rough start but has actually been very good his last 15 appearances. I'm all for making changes, but I don't see any reason to dump him at the moment.
  7. Is Haydn McGeary legit? All the guy does is hit. When do we think he gets a crack at AA?
  8. Andre Jackson must absolutely hate facing the Cubs right now.
  9. That curveball has been amazing so far today.
  10. Looking at the schedule, May 1 might actually make some sense for a call up. The Cubs are in DC, so probably a bit less pressure considering 1) they're on the road and 2) the Nats suck something awful. That gives him another week or so to mash for Iowa, which isn't awful considering he's lost some games due to weather.
  11. I agree with this. Hell, if you wanted to get Madrigal or Rios some innings at 3B, Wisdom could play 1B, too.
  12. It's also not like the Cubs get any less left-handed offensively if they replace Hosmer with Mervis either. Sure, it's possible Mervis could tank, but with his obvious power and the plate discipline he's shown, the chances of him being worse than Hosmer are probably slim. It's an obvious one-for-one replacement, especially considering they play the same position. The murkier decision for me is who goes when Morel ultimately comes up. Rios hasn't done much but also hasn't really been given much of an opportunity early on. He's also a left-handed bat with power. Torrens, who I'm not as low on as some here, might be the obvious choice at that time.
  13. Fine. Then cut him May 1 when it isn't April anymore. (Sorry that it attributes that quote to you, TT, when you were quoting an article.) What assurances did Hosmer get? Like 95% of his salary is being paid by another team. He is what he is at this point and hasn't put up palatable numbers for a first baseman since 2017 (excluding the pandemic-shortened 2020 season). He's started 14 of the 18 games, so it's not like they haven't given him an opportunity. I understand why they signed him. I understand wanting to give Mervis a few weeks at AAA to start the season, since last year was the first year he showed prowess with the bat as a professional. I think it's clear he has nothing left to prove at AAA.
  14. The entire exchange was great. You can tell Boog is tired of hearing that "small ball wins in the playoffs" [expletive].
  15. That new stadium they have is great. The old one was a dump, but they did an amazing job on the new one.
  16. We've seen a bit of it, it just hasn't been consistent yet. That homer he hit in LA gives me hope that he can get that power going again. Until he does, I'm not going to complain about him using a little luck to keep his numbers up for now.
  17. Didn't the Red Sox do that with Bronson Arroyo? Maybe I'm misremembering, but I believe they signed him to a three-year extension and then dealt him to the Reds.
  18. It is obviously very early in the season, but he's seeing fewer pitches per plate appearance so far. I wonder if it's a conscious effort to try to put the bat on the ball earlier in the count or just an early-season anomaly.
  19. I think he had some shoulder problems in the second half last year, but his final eight starts of the season were really good.
  20. Our little league was the Pony league set up. We had sponsors like Moose Lodge, funeral homes, banks, local pizza joints, athletic apparel stores, etc. My hometown even hosted the Colt League World Series (15-16 years old) for several years, which actually drew great crowds. My kids played a few years of little league in our current city in Northern Virginia, and they typically use the major league names. Although one season, the Nationals sponsored the league and every team was the Nationals, just different colors.
  21. I do like the fact that we have, assuming Thompson's velo is ok and Assad's velo bump is real, two effective multi-inning options in Assad and Thompson. Smyly isn't going to go deep into games, and I imagine they'll have Hendricks on a short leash for awhile when he comes back. Having guys that can go 2-3 innings in relief (and not just in garbage time) is great. Add in what you mentioned about the depth of arms in the upper levels, and the bullpen could be really fun to watch.
  22. My league had team sponsors. My team was sponsored by a funeral home one year.
  23. A buddy of mine has been an assistant coach for his son's team the past few years. They initially put him on the Cardinals, and my friend, a die-hard Cubs fan originally from Chicago, refused. They moved his son to the White Sox instead. Side note, I believe his son played on an All-Star team coached by James Triantos' dad.
  24. Digging deeper into 2005, the Cubs had a combined OBP of .299 from the leadoff spot that year. Hairston actually was the best of the bunch with a .344 OBP in 348 plate appearances in the leadoff spot. Patterson and Perez both produced a .263 OBP in that spot in 139 and 119 plate appearances, respectively. The team as a whole was dead last in the NL in walks. What a waste of Walker, Lee, Ramirez, and even Barrett that year by batting such garbage at the top of the order.
  25. Skimming through the batting orders of 2005, I see one instance of Perez/Macias, as well as several instances of Macias/Perez near the end of the season. We also saw the dreadful Perez/Enrique Wilson combo once.
