  1. According to the Trib, at this point, Wood is likely to start the season in a minor league rotation and not the bullpen.
  2. I was referring to a player's pre-arbitration request, not to his actual arbitration case. What a GM spends on similar players, I'd imagine, plays a factor in how much an arbitration eligible player like Ohman asks for. It's a signal to Ohman that Hendry highly (or over) values what Eyre provides and it wouldn't be an illogical jump to feel that Hendry would be willing to give him more because of that. It might not be significant in the hearing, but if Ohman sees Hendry sign Eyre for what he did, I'm guessing Ohman didn't exactly feel compelled to keep his request minimal.
  3. Ohman was the only player who was arbitration eligible late in this process making under $2 million, I believe. Is the impact of setting an example with a guy like Ohman remotely close to that of helping to set the market value of bullpen pitches? If Jim wanted to set an example, why not do it by not signing Scott Eyre to a three-year deal that's worth up to nearly $15 million instead? Eyre hasn't really shown he's any more effective than Ohman. If Jim is so willing to throw around those kinds of deals for the bullpen, what short or long-term benefit would going to arbitration have? Is it not possible that contracts like the one Eyre got have a bigger impact on an arbitration eligible bullpen pitcher's demands than letting get Ohman $100,000-$250,000 more?
  4. Wisconsin officially kicked Booker Stanley off the team today. Anyone know how their depth is at RB?
  5. Cause the arbitration process is based on service time. Comparing arbitration guys to free agents isn't remotely fair. I'm completely with Hendry on this one. You have to make an example at some point otherwise, players (knowing that the Cubs won't go to arbitration) will keep pusing up their requests knowing they'll just get the halfway point anyways. Arbitration money and free agent money are worth the same. I don't see how willingly throwing away millions of dollars is a different ballgame than worrying about a couple of hundred thousand for a guy who actually deserves it. One could pretty easily make the case that budging on arbitration numbers for a guy making less than a million isn't going to hurt the team nearly as much as the kinds of free agent contracts Hendry has signed in the past couple of years. The difference to the organization was chump change.
  6. In-state recruiting should never be a problem for Illinois. Northwestern and NIU, although better football programs right now, don't really offer Illinois any competition. Most in-state guys, especially public league players, are Illinois' to lose.
  7. I love it when fairness depends on who the recipient is. Why is it that veterans get rewarded for below-average performance but a guy who pitched in games for the Cubs in 2000 and 2001 before going down for a full two seasons, battling back, and contributing nicely for the team four years later can't? This reminds me of something I wanted to bring up a few weeks ago. Is Hendry losing his status as "players' GM?" In addition to the veteran issue, Matt Clement left the team pretty upset with Jim for never calling him and I believe Grudz had some words about the organization when he left, as well. This isn't the image I had of Hendry two years ago.
  8. Edit: A tad outdated. Stupid stats.
  9. Didn't see the game, but Suhr was excellent last night. 10 points, 5 assists, 0 TOs, 3 off. rebs. Vaden did a lot without scoring a bunch. Marco finally rebounded like a 6'8" 260lber should. The team as a whole did a great job rebounding. Vaden and Killer were 1 short of the entire rebouding total of the entire NW team. But Indiana didn't double-up Northwestern in rebounds. That alone is a moral victory for the Wildcats. Seriously, though. Indiana may not be a great rebounding team, but they're doing significantly better than 26.7 per game. It helps when you try for them.
  10. i think the point someone made earlier about how cuban is very interested in statistical analysis in basketball and would likely be more of a saber-type in baseball is pretty notable though. plus, even if the new owner isn't any good, it's not like im hugely concerned about the team getting worse. at least there'd be a CHANCE of new ownership changing directions. For a hands-on owner, though, baseball is much more difficult than basketball. There are far more players and statistics, making it significantly more of a group effort. I'd love to see someone come in who can provide an equal payroll while instituting a better philosophy throughout the system, but I'm not sure how likely that is. We need new management, but there are a lot of worse choices out there than MacPhail and co.
  11. Average recruiting class for Northwestern. I expected more after the past few seasons, but it became pretty obvious early that this wasn't going to be a real good year. Regardless, there are some good players in there. Mauro is going to compete for the QB spot after playing his senior season in a spread offense and there are some pretty good skill players, as well. Could have used more help on both sides of the line, but Walker is holding two scholarships for players returning to the team after being kicked off. Plus, if the two top recruits from last year who were injured stay healthy through the summer, that will be a big boost for the lines. We did lose OC Dunbar to Cal, though, where he'll become their new OC. I wasn't a huge fan of his, but it'll make things a little more interesting.
  12. Yet another horrible shooting performance by the 'Cats. Looks like the good first-half defense will go for naught.
  13. In addition, 10 players are going to NFL Europe.
  14. Reagan was a huge CUB fan, not just baseball. Besides working Cub games for WHO, he went to Eureka College and was born in Dixon, the guy was true blue Illinois all the way. You can change your home base in your adult life, and he did, but you can NEVER change your baseball roots, as we all know. Dutch was a Cubbie, and like my Grandpa never saw the Cubs win a World Series. :-( reagan was history's greatest monster. Ugh, I know that's a line in the Simpsons, but I forget who they were talking about. Jon? Jimmy Carter was history's greatest monster (Marge in Chains). I don't know what his connections are to the Cubs. His statue made a great tetherball pole, though. I'd love to see that Murray game.
  15. Can't give him more than Neifi.
  16. Barrett's rate was pretty good until he injured his right shoulder (sometime around mid-May, I believe). He said he wasn't able to lift any weights with it for quite a while.
  17. Why, because they have 2 road losses to ranked opponents? No, although the Michigan State loss was pretty ugly. It's because they trailed to Penn State with under 50 seconds left in the game and Minnesota had several chances of beating them before the Hawkeyes won in triple OT at home.
  18. Hughes is. He's a special assistant to Hendry. Wilken is replacing John Stockstill, who left the organization earlier this offseason to join his brother in Baltimore.
  19. Oops. That's the last time I rely on a vague headline. Either way, they have been about as up and down in the Big Ten as you can get.
  20. Iowa beats #16 OSU on the road. They're such a weird team.
  21. Have the Hawks gotten into double digit "and-one" fouls in their favor this half yet? Yikes.
  22. Remember when they were up by more than 7? That was nice. Is that 3 or 4 goaltending violations against the Hawks this half?
  23. Pretty ugly third quarter for the Bulls defense.
  24. A well-deserved beating just for those uniforms. Hinrich looks to be okay.
  25. Impressive. And way to go, Narron.
