  1. 1) Peavy = Championship? I mean I hope so...but that's quite the assumption...and easy to make when you don't have to shell out the cash to pay for the man. 2) The Cubs will make a bunch of money when the Cubs win the series...undoubtedly. But will they pick up a bunch of new fans? Doubt it. They sell out almost constantly, so they won't draw significantly more attendance. They'll get a one time boost from merchandising, higher ratings, and more national exposure, but I don't see how that sustains.
  2. ...or something....Bernie barely hides his dislike of "newfangled statistical analysis" here, and really blames Jeff Luhnow for being the cause of the breakup of the TLR, Jocketty, Dewitt triumvirate. http://www.stltoday.com/stltoday/sports/columnists.nsf/berniemiklasz/story/3AFA4A41F027B7908625755B00121B29?OpenDocument
  3. I don't know whether to be informed, amused, or offended by this thread.
  4. Wait, I thought this was the 2009 offseason thread. Favre retired in 2008...or was it 2007? Crap I don't remember.
  5. I went back a few pages and didn't see any mention of this, but I'm kinda upset I didn't see the Johnny "Redd" Kerr ceremony. Back in a time when I watched basketball MUCH more regularly (the MJ days), Kerr was a fixture for Bulls basketball. I really enjoyed looking through this gallery, and especially liked MJ clapping the talcum in front of Kerr. I didn't realize that Johnny was in bad shape. That's a shame. http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/basketball/bulls/chi-johnny-red-kerr-chicago-bulls-photos,0,7950905.photogallery
  6. I was one of them, but this doesn't surprise me. There's never been any indication at all that the Bears had an interest in Carr. Anyone else think there's still a chance we keep Grossman another year?
  7. Or bust out the belt.
  8. Keeping up the anime discussion would be a good way to get this thread locked.
  9. Is it really perplexing? I mean, he was out of options...and he sucked right now...I think those two things are pretty much fact. Either they trade him for something/anything, or they risk losing him for nothing as he clears waivers. This was clearly the better option. I certainly understand the hand wringing over this, but I think that has more to do with Hill's failures than anything the Cubs failed at. Certainly you wish that the coaching staff could have worked him through his issues, but maybe it's just not meant to be. Better pitchers than Rich Hill (Rick Ankiel) caught a case of the mental yips and couldn't get it back, even with a pitching coach with the midas touch (Duncan), which Rothschild hasn't proven to be. I think this is just one of those moves that people will understandably be unhappy about, but understand. It's not that he was traded that's perplexing...it's the timing of it coupled with the fact that it's yet another trade with the Orioles that doesn't appear to help the team at all currently. Not trying to harp on this...but what part of the timing was perplexing? It had to be done before ST (or is it opening day?) or he had to be put through waivers. And whether you let someone pick him off waivers, or trade him for a minor leaguer, you weren't gonna be helped now either way.
  10. It was defensible at face value. If the Cubs knew they were gonna give up on either of them if they sucked for 3 weeks then they're idiots for not trading them. Holding onto Hill is more defensible than Pie...at least Hill did some things at the major league level. Pie, not so much.
  11. Those "stats" are horrible. They are especially horrible for OF. If you've got better ones, feel free to volunteer them.

  13. Best commercial of the night...the Careerbuilder "signs it might be time to look for a new job"...? I know it was a weak batch....
  14. Seconded. Go Steelers.
  15. Is that significant?
  16. Both bad OF's. Card fan buddy mentioned he'd like Dunn, and while I completely understood, and so would I, I made the comment "If you thought that Duncan was an adventure in the OF....." He thinks Dunn is twice the fielder that Duncan is. I need some stat nerdy types to tell me who the better fielder is, and how much better.
  17. I think jersey has been saying this for a long time, but those of use that were looking forward to new ownership (and I'm included in that) need to be careful what we wish for. If that article is true, and Ricketts and the Cubs are going to be a bit strapped financially, that's not good. The Trib was continuing to increase payroll every year. (Worked out well for them eh?) Should be interesting to see what Hendry can do without blank checks to hand around. EDIT: heh...almost directly quoting you there, dexter, was unintentional
  18. That sounds like a move Peavy would agree to....yup.
  19. I can do this. Ok...that's great. I'm not asking you that. I'm asking is there any more random stats I should keep track of. We have a regular poster that already does this. That's who Fred is.
  20. No, now it stands for North Side Bragging & Bitching. :D my 6-year old son just read this post and now he won't stop saying bitching who do i need to call to talk to about this Bust his jaw.
  21. He still put up some decent offensive numbers, even without the O-line being strong. He throws a lot of picks, but throws for a lot of yards too. he never had much of a running game, either, did he? Nope. I think he really kinda got a raw deal...franchise QB on an expansion team (lot of hope for success there huh?), and then takes the fall when the team begins to figure itself out. Even if he's not a Bear (doubt he will be), I'm rooting for the guy.

  23. I said this last year, but I still like Carr for a backup. There's no QB's to get all excited over in the draft, so unless you're gonna make a McNabb-like splash via trade or FA which would obviously bump Orton to backup, then Carr would be a good backup choice.
