  1. I don't know. The best baseball teams win a little more than 60% of the time, and that's including against all competition, good or bad. How often does the best baseball team beat another top 8 team? 53%? The best NFL teams win 80% or more of the time. I think being the best might matter more in football, but it still doesn't absolutely determine the champion. That still has a lot to do with the length of the season though. If football played 162 games, there wouldn't be anybody winning 80% of the time. Similarly, if baseball played only 16 games, it wouldn't be out of the realm of possibility that a team on a hot start wins 10 or 12.
  2. But see, having Derosa actually helps with injuries, cuz you have someone that can actually play 3B on a regular basis when Ramirez went down. Losing Derosa hurt depth, a lot. This team might be good when they get healthy, but there's no guarantee that they'll ever be entirely healthy. Soriano is playing with a gimpy knee. Ramirez "might" be back in mid-July if he doesn't need surgery. In the meantime, guys like Scales and Blanco are getting playing time. Soto and Bradley's struggles are surprising, but Lee shouldn't be. And really, I don't think we can count his injury times as a negative. Lets be honest, Hoffpauir has outplayed Lee so far this year, in only 30 or so fewer AB's. The truth is that Hendry was shortsighted in the offseason, and got left handed at the expense of depth, and some better players. Is it the Cubs only issue? No...of course not. But lets not pretend that it's not a big issue.
  3. The only criticism that I have for Rothschild is that he's not Dave Duncan. But then, there's only one of him.
  4. And shouldn't he be 4th, behind Lilly?
  5. Maybe he signed cheaper than they thought he would?
  6. See? You and 10,000,000 other people are thinking the same thing. He might not make it through the fenced area to the practice fields. I'll bet after a few days he'll be taking the cart around the back to avoid the insanity. Nah...he'll make a special trip over to my kid cuz he's so much cuter than every other kid!! haha
  7. I'm wondering if I bring my 2yo son over to TC, if maybe I can manage to end up with a Cutler autograph...:)
  8. It amazes me that people think the argument that Hendry completely abdicates his job to a subordinate is a legitimate defense. Nobody's saying that, though. Look this year the Packers fired their D Coordinator and hired Dom Capers. To noone's surprise, Capers switched the Pack from a 4-3 to a 3-4 defense. With his first two picks in the draft this year, Ted Thompson picked defensive players he thinks are well suited to play in Capers' new system, BJ Raji and Clay Matthews. So tell me. Did Ted Thompson "completely abdicate his job to a subordinate" there? Is he a "puppet on a string", as the other poster intimated? Reconstructing a batting order to get more lefthanded is very much like what the Packers are going through. I mean seriously, nobody thinks that was Hendry's idea and not Piniella's, do they? Um...Capers didn't switch the defense. Ted Thompson and Mike McCarthy switched the defense, and brought Capers in because he was suited for coaching that D. It wasn't like the Packers brought in Capers and he, over the GM and the head coach, suddenly decided to change the entire structure of the defense.
  9. Yeah, I'm hoping they're all over this. Prepare to be disappointed. http://blogs.chicagosports.chicagotribune.com/huddleup/2009/05/dont-expect-the-chicago-bears-to-pursue-freeagent-receiver-matt-jones.html Call me crazy, but that sounds like he's leaving open the possibility of at least looking at the guy. He's very talented. We won't move quickly. We have to do our homework. You have to look what he brings to the team on the field. After I started pasting the quotes, I thought about changing my lead-in sentence, cuz it didn't sound like as much of a rejection as the Trib seemed to think it was.
  10. I remember nothing from the Last Boyscout other than who's in it. It's like it's been erased from my mind.

  15. Also makes it impossible to have an effective running game apparently.
  16. Sportsline.com: Guys...he won't win in Chicago, because he couldn't win in Vandy...can't you see that? :P
  17. Yeah, I'm hoping they're all over this. I'd be pretty skeptical seeing as Angelo has been pretty adamant about going with the WR we have now. Then again, he said that about the QB as well... Well, his first statement was that it starts with the QB. He backed off that one, but ended up going with his first feeling anyway. I think he felt all along it was about the QB and not the WR. He dabbled in free agent veterans last year and felt he got burned. Plus, you add in the drug thing and there's a good reason to believe he won't even look at cokeboy. What WR's has Angelo gotten through the draft or FA? Not counting Hester since that's not what he was drafted as... Drafted Bobby Wade Justin Gage Bernard Berrian Mark Bradley Airese Curry Juaquin Iglesias Derek Kinder Knox Bennett FA Muhsin Rashied Davis Booker Lloyd Those are off the top of my head, there has to be more. But outside of Berrian, there's not a lot of success there (so far...Knox, Kinder, Iglesias, and Bennett could still possibly pan out.) My point being, Angelo hasn't had a great WR track record. Maybe he feels like improving QB enough can make up for his failures with WR.

  21. If only Lou would start driving in more runs, maybe hitting for better average. Maybe he could've caught that ball at 2nd that Miles muffed. Or he could have come in an thrown lefty instead of Cotts. Stupid Lou. His ejection in 2007 completely changed that season. I think we had the best record in the majors after that ejection. Why not try it again? He should have done it yesterday on that bang-bang play with Freel at 3rd base. So your contention is that the Cubs would start hitting the ball better, and pitching the ball better, and catching the ball better, and getting breaks and beating their opponent if only Lou would give his hat a few swift kicks?

  23. Last I heard he was looking at that new League that's starting up. His agent denies that, but from what I've heard he's being shopped for league minimum.
  24. actually, they aren't. At least not this year. Pretty small sample size though, when there's much more than this year available for comparison.
