  1. Hawks and Niemi likely to go to arbitration. http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/hockey/blackhawks/ct-spt-0728-blackhawks-chicago--20100727,0,4087148.story
  2. probably a.j. hinch. i guess trey hillman counts too, although he was a manager in japan. I did try and find the answer, and Hillman had been the closest I found. Didn't realize that Hinch hadn't been an assistant in the majors. In any case, I think it's safe to say it's a pretty rare scenario.
  3. Nobody is going to take that contract, and I don't think Ricketts is letting us eat contracts at this point. I think that's part of the reason that Hendry is "safe" for next year...I think Ricketts is all about either unloading the whole (or at the least most!) contract when deals are made at this point. I think he's willing to spend, but not willing to spend on nothing.
  4. Ochocinco will, barring injury. He's never had a season where he started 14+ games and had fewer than 1000 yards. Maybe, but it'll be more because of TO than Chad.
  5. Do people realize that starting record is a poor way to evaluate QB play? Not that he didn't suck last year, but if that's what you're getting at, then say that. How many good QBs have poor W/L records? The QB is arguably the single most important position in sports and dictates W/L record more than anything else in football. Well that's a loaded quesiton, because you can just dismiss anyone that I mention as a bad QB. But the Bears, despite being bad for a good chunk of time, still won a good number of games with a lot of bad QB's over the years. Kyle Orton has a record of 21-12. Is he a good QB? Grossman is 23-12. Jake Delhomme is 50-31. How good of QB's are they? Wins are a terrible measure of a QB's success. It's fine as a measure for his team, but it tells you nothing about what he did individually. And besides, when there's so many other stats you can use to say a QB is bad, why use record as a starter? We don't have to have this argument with other stats.
  6. ESPN preseason power rankings are out... http://espn.go.com/nfl/powerrankings?year=2010&week=0 Do people realize that starting record is a poor way to evaluate QB play? Not that he didn't suck last year, but if that's what you're getting at, then say that.
  7. The whole football/baseball analogy was not mine. It's really a bad comparison for that, and other reasons. The point is that minor league managers that have never coached in the majors rarely go straight from a minor league manager straight to a major league manager. Now that I've said that, I'm sure someone will come up with some comprehensive list of how I'm wrong.
  8. Yeah, I didn't see a big market team like the BEARS going with a first time head coach in Mike Ditka. What were they thinking ??? Ditka was an assistant coach for 10 years before getting hired as a Bears coach. Sandberg has spent exactly zero years doing any kind of major league coaching. I honestly don't know the answer to this, but who was the last major league manager that was hired without ever having been an assistant coach of some kind in the majors?
  9. I'm in denial about Ryno. I just don't see a big market team going with a first time big league manager. With the exception of Bruce Kimm being interim, Hendry tends to go for experience.
  10. Edmonds wasn't as crucial to the Cubs as Favre is to the Vikes though.
  11. LOL. In fairness, he obviously had no clue who he was looking at. But it illustrates Beck's way of thinking pretty succinctly, doesn't it.
  12. I'm now instinctively reading all your posts with a Steve Irwin accent. It's funny who people have for their "go to Aussie". You go with Steve Irwin, and Post Count Padder went with Kangaroo Jack, while Paul Hogan is instinctively the first person that pops to my mind....
  13. I don't know why everybody is convinced that LeBron is going to Miami. He's not leaving Cleveland. Fixed for 3 weeks ago. Completely different situation. Melo isn't a free agent. And won't be until after a forthcoming lockout. He has no idea how much money he'll be able to get after that after whatever the new CBA says.... He has an extension offer on the table in Denver. He'll take the sure thing.
  14. I don't know why everybody is convinced that Melo is going to NY. He's not leaving Denver.

  16. Really? That's kind of interesting. I thought I remember him being considered a dark horse QB in his draft, was it 2009? 3+ year starter with improving, but not great, numbers. Decent size. Might be a solid project for Martz to work on. Yeah, that was in the Trib. It would seem to indicate that a vet backup is probably out of the question at this point.

  18. The Bears released defensive tackle Jimmy Saddler-McQueen and receiver Vic Hall. They agreed to terms with running back Harvey Unga, selected in the 7th round of the supplemental draft.
  19. There is a rule in the CBA about how much salary can change from year to year, but it's still too big of an amount.
  20. So they're basically making an example out of the Devils. I'm betting they'll just have to spread out the salary a bit more so it's not such a steep dropoff near the end.
  21. Pulling a Delonte. Nice. Negative. Nobody's mom was involved.
  22. Should we expect all your posts to be pimping that website?
