This has to change in the next CBA, right? This system encourages high spending teams to spend less every other year. That’s the point from the owners perspective. A de facto salary cap Yeah, working as intended.
If Bryce signs because of (in part) his friendship with KB, does that help the Cubs keep KB down the road cuz he wants to stay with Bryce? Conversely, if the Cubs can't sign Bryce, does that make it harder for them to retain KB?
So how does this work...if Tulo signs with another team, he gets the salary with the new team PLUS the salary that he's still owed from the Jays? EDIT: Rob cleared it up.
Indeed. The guys on the Effectively Wild podcast (the BP podcast) have never really been much to talk about the HOF stuff, but in their latest pod they were pretty fired up about how absolutely obscene this is. "Yes, Baines could be a HOFer....if you doubled his WAR" Meh. The Hall of Fame means so little to me at this point that I can't fathom getting worked up over it.
They're making money off of the team. horsefeathers their profit margin. When it costs so damn much to go to the games and the entire area is essentially being turned into a bro and yuppie Disney World for alcoholics, they better pay out when opportunities like this come along. I'll bite: much do you think the Cubs make each year? More than Bryce Harper's potential yearly salary.
