    Kind of a natural fit. Great move for Texans, IMO. Hire a Texan, in Texas, where there is maybe the most football talent in the country, and hiring a guy that players like to play for. He already has some pieces in place in a lot of places. Maybe adding the #1 pick. Anyone halfway capable of running an offense and they'll be contending for a Superbowl by 2015. We're talking about Lovie Smith right? I think he meant that if Lovie were HC and hired someone capable of running an offense. Still arguably a stretch for Lovie.

    But if they're already involved in trials or treatment somewhere in the northwest, it may be a lot easier to travel from the Washington area than from LA. We just don't know all the factors he's making his decisions from.

    Well this isn't true. It's perfectly plausible to make the best decision possible given the circumstances every time and still lose due to other teams also making good decisions.

    But those are the rules of the game. There's no point in excusing prolonged losing because the rules of the game aren't the same they were when he built the Red Sox. Unless you somehow believe the rules will revert back to the form they were at when he was able to exploit them to his advantage. The rules change was only one element that I mentioned, though. The plan that Theo and Ricketts probably came up with during interviews and the hiring process have been greatly impacted by things beyond his control. And while the rules change equally impacted all teams, he's had plenty of factors he's had to deal with that other teams haven't. No matter how smart the GM/President of the team were, budget concerns were going to be there thanks to Ricketts and the neighborhood jackassery.

    Circumstances have definitely gone against Theo since he arrived. Be it rules change, budget difficulties, issues with improving the ballpark, etc...there's been a number of factors that are out of his control. I have no belief that somehow Theo is a magical man that is without fault. And I understand those that don't agree with the slow methodology he's using to build this team. I get all of that. But I'm an optimistic sports fan generally, and I've had little faith in the Cubs for a long time. Ricketts and Theo always felt like "they better get this right, because if they can't, I don't know who can." And that hasn't changed for me, though I admit, my overall belief in Ricketts and Theo has definitely dipped since they came in. Anyway, I'm not going to try to put a ton of rational explanation or thought into this point, because it's tough to rationally explain your fandom. All I can tell you is that if Theo fails at building this team into a consistent contender, my fandom is going to be at risk.

    If the Cubs don't make an on-field turnaround while Theo is here, why would you be upset that he leaves? If we're still floundering after 5 years, he failed and it's time to let someone else try to fix it. Because if Theo can't do it, I have little faith that anyone can.

    If Theo left before the Cubs were able to make an on field turnaround of some kind, I'd have to seriously re-evaluate my fandom. When Ricketts and Theo came in, I really believed things were pointed in the right direction. Despite my disagreements with the way Ricketts and Theo have gone about things, I still believe we'll get there, just not in the way I expected. But...if Theo were to leave...I dunno...

    Um. It doesn't read that way even a little to me. Seems to me they wanna get Jay signed to a reasonable extension. Reasonable to Emery and Jay are probably completely different things. One point of view, Jay missed over 1/4 of the season for the 2nd time in 3 years, still has only 1 playoff win, and there wasn't significant dropoff in production when he went out this time. Other point of view, Jay was leading the #2 scoring offense in the NFL, averaging a TD more than it is with McCown and he still runs circles around what the Bears have ever had throwing the ball and whats likely to be available in the near future. I could see the team hoping for 12-15M/year and Cutler going more for the 16-18M/year range. High end of team and low end of Cutler are close, but opposite ends of the spectrum is completely different. I'm not saying it's gonna be an overnight negotiation. But both sides best interests are served by him staying. Jay needs consistency in coaching staffs and scheme badly. And the Bears have no QB alternatives. Something is gonna get worked out. This is all just negotiation.

    I think it's been much more noticeable this year, especially when the guy who's best at it, Peanut, has been hurt for much of the year. I did think they sacrificed some yardage on at least a few plays trying to strip the ball, but I generally agree with you that they're just terrible at tackling and, even more importantly, at being in the right spot to tackle a guy. They've given up a few yards here and there in the past trying to do get the strip, but when it's a guy turning a 3 yard run into a 4 yard run, you deal with it...especially when they have the success they've had previously. But when it's a guy turning a 20 yard run into a 25 yard run, it's more noticeable...and it's the 20 yard part of that that is really the bigger concern.

    I mean, it's not like this year there's been an uptick in trying to strip the ball and that it's resulted in missed tackles. They've always tried to strip the ball, the failure to tackle has just developed independent of that.

    The Bears REALLY need to stop trying to strip the ball so often. Watching the game, it looked like a few of the missed tackles were because someone was just trying to rip the ball away. Maybe I'm not remembering correctly, but it seems like this has been the trend all season. They aren't missing tackles because they're trying to strip the ball. They're just not good at tackling. If they're gonna be bad at tackling, might as well try to strip the ball.
