  1. Manny still OPS'd at .870 last year, and murdered left handers. No doubt in my mind he can still be an effective DH for them next year, it's just a matter of how much of his crap are you willing to put up with.
  2. Catching in the Texas heat, you're going to have to do a lot of "spelling" regardless. Unless you got a young Pudge on the juice, you need 2 catchers. Napoli provides the added benefit of playing some 1B and DH as well, even when he's not behind the plate.
  3. I would say quantifying "value" is a nearly impossible thing to from the outside looking in, and inherently subjective and arbitrary. It could also be easily over-inflated if one were to have a confirmation bias against Henry. Henry has had enough mishaps to focus on, mainly his free agent aquisitions and contracts doled out, his inability to draft and develop positional players, etc. His ability to get the most out of farm system in trades wouldn't be one of them.
  4. Yep. I remember the outcry of trading off Bobby Hill for Aramis. I also remember how stupid it was to trade Choi for Derek Lee, because "Choi is already just as good as Lee is".
  5. Yeah, they were reporting on the MLB network that part of the deal is that the Cubs were signing him to a "personal services contract" after he retired. Still, he's a classy guy, a true Cub at heart, and I'm glad he's back.
  6. I don't think he wanted to be "the man" in Texas. I don't think he was ever comfortable with all the hero worship they placed on him.
  7. And the Rangers could actually use Soriano as a DH, since they're (understandably) wary about resigning Vladdy to a big deal and hoping he recreates another year like last year.
  8. I had completely forgotten DeRosa was on the Cards in 09 before this. Jose Vizcaino: Cubs --> every other team in MLB --> Cardinals Miguel Cairo: Cubs --> Cardinals Cesar Izturis: Cubs --> Pirates --> Cardinals Tony Womack: Cubs --> Cardinals Mark Grudzielanek: Cubs --> Cardinals Shawon Dunston was on the Cardinals in 1999 and 2000. That means a former Cubs middle infielder has been on the Cardinals every single season since 1999. That's too bizarre to be a coincidence. Delino DeShields as well, via Baltimore.
  9. Just from what I've heard about him from around Dallas ... he badly needs a change of scenery. He was born and raised around the Dallas area, and he's an eager to please type of personality. He lets the pressure of being the hometown kid get to him and he presses, which leads to prolonged slumps. Wouldn't be opposed to getting him on a cheap flier, he's put up great minor league numbers and he's a great fielder, but in no way should you depend or count on him filling the hole at 1B for you.
  10. Ryno managing and Gracie announcing. We're getting the band back together!!
  11. Gosh, I hope Colvin doesn't tailspin to finish out the year by hitting a lot of homers, because that will only make his OPS even more SLG lopsided and skyrocket his HR/FB ratio. I know that HR/FB stat has a lot of intrinsic value because an interwebbings blog where all the cool kids hang out at told me so.
  12. It's especially troublesome when it doesn't fit your pre-existing bias on a player.
  13. Yeah, shocking the old washed up 1Ber who's OPSing .750 who has shown he's only willing to waive his no trade for a few teams for a 5 week rental didn't land us a huge haul.
  14. No doubt he made some horrible trades early in his tenor, but he's completely built up the Rangers farm system from nothing (especially in terms of pitching), been extremely shrewd in free agency despite having next to nothing to work with in budget (Vlad, Colby Lewis) and his trades the last several years have been quite good. He has baseball's 27th ranked payroll playing at the 6th best winning percentage. His drafting record is very good. But you're right .. those early trades are almost so bad that I almost wonder if he's not undervalued because people can't get past the spectacular nature of them ... also the fact the Rangers don't get much publicity, even within Texas.
  15. With no end in sight to the Rangers ownership/bankruptcy debacle, I really think Jon Daniels could be had ... especially if Nolan Ryan's ownership group doesn't look like they're going to win. There's already a lot of uneasiness in Texas that someone is going to snatch him away.
  16. Amen, Hendry must be fired today. I don't know what Ricketts is waiting for and why it's gotta be in the TRIB. Is he waiting for the All-Star break? Why? If I were Ricketts, I would do exactly what he's doing now.. keeping Hendry through the year and dumping salary to give the next GM as clean of a slate as possible. The one usefull trait Hendry has shown as a GM is as a trade negotiator. His parting gift to the Cubs will be getting the maximum value out of his junk. In the meantime, you'll have a better grasp of what your pool of potential GMs will look like once the season is over. The hiring of and transition over to the next GM will be the most important decision for this franchise for the next 5-7 years. It's too important to be done in a reactionary or emotional manner. I would be all for dumping Kos for whatever we can get. Kosuke is not garbage, but his contract is.
  17. The Rangers fans aren't too broken up about losing Smoak because Chris Davis is OPSing at .950 in AAA he's only a few months older than Smoak. Smoak might figure it out, but it was apparent it wasn't going to be this year. It's hard to say they didn't get max value for Smoak when you're getting one of the top 5-6 starting pitchers in baseball in return. Even if Lee is a half year rental, they'll take the draft picks and continue to churn their (quite good) minor league/player development system. Cliff Lee gives them a legitimate #1 rotation ace, Cy Young contending pitcher that they haven't had since maybe Fergie Jenkins. It breeds a lot of excitement into a franchise that has only won one playoff game in their entire franchise history. Lee could win more than that this year alone for them.
  18. It's a good move for everyone. The Rangers have a true #1 ace of the rotation for the first time since .... god knows when. Colby Lewis has been a great story, but he's not exactly someone you want to hang your hat on. They got the Marineers to eat 2.5 million (it can't be stated enough how impressive it is that Josh Daniels/Nolan Ryan can pull of a trade for a #1 pitcher with their ownership mess what it is). Smoak and Chris Davis were redundant prospects in their system. Chris Davis gets another shot to prove himself in the majors, after he was moved up too soon. Smoak gets to work on progressing without the pressure of having to produce for a team that's going to be in a pennant race/playoffs. Beaven gets out of the Rangers glut of pitching prospects and gets a clearer path to a major league rotation.
  19. Even if the Rangers had money, the last thing Nolan Ryan wants is another Vicente Padilla in his lockerroom.
  20. Yeah, Zambrano never lost his shizz before Lou got here.
  21. Considering we'll be trading a terrible player and a terrible contract and a terrible person, that would be a plus return.
  22. Cubs take a midget Loogy in the first round. They'll start grooming him for middle relief right away. I wish I was being sarcastic.
  23. Don't really have a problem with this move. He's outclassed AA competition, and basically ran out of promotions. Pie and Patterson should have no effect on how the Cubs handle Castro, one way or another. Both were fundamentally flawed prospects and outrageously overrated ... Corey especially, who was mostly rated for "tools" and less for any sustainable production in the minors. That said, the caveat is that Piniella has to play him and let him progress against major league pitching rather than putting him on the bench/doghouse.
  24. We already had the worst contract in baseball for an every day player, and the worst contract in baseball for a starting pitcher ... might as well have the worst contract in baseball for a reliever and complete the trifecta.
  25. I'd rather platoon him in left with Soriano. We could use the bat.
