  1. The Cubs biggest advantage is that we have a rotation that should give us a favorable matchup every game (in theory). I'm not sure many of the teams that lost Game 1 and went on to lose the Series had a pitcher like Harden as the #3 pitcher in their rotation.
  2. Lilly has had a nice 2nd half of the season. I think he has something like a 1.19 WHIP in his last 9 starts. He should be more than adequate as a #3 in a playoff rotation, especially if given the NL's #1 offense and maybe best bullpen. Losing Z would obviously hurt, but it merely drops the Cubs from a phenomenal rotation to a very good one.
  3. What a horrific season for Veal.
  4. I'm thinking maybe we shouldn't start making gameplans about Guzman and his role on next year's just because he's managed to stay healhty for whopping 3 weeks. Especially if it's factoring into reasons why we should let a possible Cy Young candidate walk in free agency. And I'm thinking if Lou's job is to win baseball games, it's going to be hard to convince him why a reliever with a sub 1.2 ERA needs to start next year in AAA.
  5. While it's a certainty the Cubs have had plenty of horrible players during it's history, I'm not so certain they ever had a manager who had such an unwavering affinity for bad players as the one during the time frame in question.
  6. If we're going to factor salary bang per buck into the equation, Todd Hundley's 2001 with his 67 OPS+ in 246 ABs would have been serious contender for a spot on the list.
  7. If all those Vitters' doubles start turning into homers as he gets older and stronger, we could have something special. There's no question he has great ability to put the barrel of the bat on the ball.
  8. These 2 PTBNL better be pretty good, because I can't believe Dallas Buck is the centerpiece of this package.
  9. He sounds a little pitchy. Just a little pitchy.
  10. An old New York Times article about Cuban and his "cutting edge" winval statistical models from from 2003. http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.html?res=9904E1DD123DF934A15757C0A9659C8B63&sec=&spon=&pagewanted=all I don't see he and Hendry seeing eye to eye on much. Dare I say ... could Cuban and his pocketbook and a common philosophy entice Beane to join in as GM/President of Baseball Operations?
  11. Brewers are going to end up trading for Dunn, as a defensive upgrade over Braun.
  12. So people have gone from not wanting Jim Edmonds on the team no matter what, to believing he's going to continue hitting 130 OPS+ for the next two months (hopefully more). That bandwagon filled up pretty quick. Ibanez has proven to be a pretty dependable and steady 120 OPS+ player the last three years. Whether it's a bad move or not would depend on the price, but there's no question he could upgrade the roster. Between waiting for the other shoe to drop on the Edmonds/Reed platoon, Soriano's nagging injury problems and Kosuke's 2 month slump (hopefully he's starting to dig his way out of it), I'm happy to see the Cubs looking for another outfielder. I like DeRo, but he's been playing entirely too much rightfield.
  13. Didn't just beat CC and Sheets ... kind of slapped them around a little bit.
  14. I believe we can call the Brewers post All Star Break hot streak officially dead. As is the Cubs offensive slump.
  15. Because Lou is going to use him tommorrow too.
  16. We can talk about high stress innings and pitchers age until the Cows come home, but when Lou decides to go to the pen why is he going to a guy who has thrown 4 innings in the last 3 games? Why even carry a full bullpen when Lou only uses three of them? Why not just load the roster with bats and carry a 3 man bullpen.
  17. I think my high school team fielded a better defense. And I'm not using hyperbole.
  18. We shouldn't have tempted fate by mocking Yost's overuse of his pitchers.
  19. Let's hurry up and get this game over with, because we're starting to anger the baseball Gods letting leadoff doubles go to waste like that.
  20. If I had that bullpen, I would pretend the bullpen phone was broken too.
  21. Those Brewer fans who go up and down comparing the rosters and proclaim the Cubs aren't nearly as talented as the Brewers ... I don't think they're taking defense into account.
  22. The wonderful thing about Braun is he doesn't seem to realize that he's an absolute butcher in the field and he tries to make plays he has no business making ... like sliding backhands on liners.
