  1. Or maybe it shows that our outfield is a dumpster fire, there's not really any blue chip outfield options in free agency. When the biggest buzz outfield free agent is a guy who will likely start out the year in the minors, it should tell you something.
  2. He's a good buy low candidate for relatively low risk. He sucked last year, but he was a 3.5 WAR player from 2005-2010. Being able to play all 3 OF positions he gives the Cubs a lot of flexibility to make other roster moves (Soriano, Byrd), but at the same time not making the kind of money that would block them from it.
  3. The Jesus signs DeJesus in his first acquisition.
  4. Hell, part of me is pulling for a Cespedes/Jackson/Sizemore OF for 2012. All of me would be happy with that. Byrd would be easy to move. I bet we could sell a defensively lacking AL team like the A's or Mariners on Soriano for some quality prospects assuming we eat a significant amount of his salary. The Rangers would probably be very interested in Byrd. They absolutely loved him while he was there, and they need a bridge player at CF until Leonys Martin is ready to bring up full time. They have more RHP prospects than they know what to do with.
  5. Exactly. Speaking of dumps, with all that new money he can afford to move them out of that dump of a state Texas and up to a nice luxury suburb in north of Chicago. Theo has obviously never been to Southlake. Wow, wiki says the town is 95% white. That's Winnetka. Come to think of it .... they're pretty similar. Winnetka probably richer per household, but Southlake with cheaper real estate, no state income tax and the best high school football program money can buy.
  6. "He was in a pool of candidates we looked at, and we seriously considered him, but at the end of the day Mike Maddux just absolutely blew us away with as being the right man for this particular situation with his specific expertise." >>>>> "Tito Francona? I wouldn't work with that guy again at gunpoint. I'm not saying those drug and booze rumors coming out of Boston are true, I'm just saying I wouldn't even give a second thought to hiring him again. Read into it what you will."
  7. I take it that Theo is passively mentioning Tito as a favor of sorts to an old colleague, particularly after the hatchet job that was performed on him by the Red Sox FO on his way out the door. Certainly doesn't help Francona's stock as a manager when his former boss of 8 years publicly says he wouldn't even consider hiring him again.
  8. Sounds like a mentality of removing the reliance on pitch counts as well. Of course, always helps when you have an incredibly deep bull pen. Still don't think Maddux is really reliant or cares much about a quantitative approach to the game, even if the results coincidentally might show it.
  9. Is Maddux' handling of pitchers data and quantitative related? It seems like he's following a workout and training regime implemented by an "old school meathead" Nolan Ryan going with his gut and flying in the face of the quantitative rule of thumb at the time. http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/vault/article/magazine/MAG1169750/index.htm
  10. I question whether a background or love of stats is even highly sought after in a managerial candidate. In Theo's grand scheme, he might be providing organizational structure and guidelines for which the manager works under, and the manager is more of a personality/people handler and summer camp counselor than a strategist.
  11. Please achieve dominance again Marmol, so we can ship you off to the highest bidder.
  12. The Cubs bad contracts after this season being Alfonso Soriano. And whatever pitcher we have to overpay to bring in this offseason.
  13. I agree with this. If he really doesn't want to be a manager, I don't know why he goes through the motions of interviewing with the Cubs but not the Red Sox. IMHO, Theo already knows who he wants as the manager, and has probably let it be known to Maddux that he's going to get the offer after he clears the formalities of the manager search/interview dog and pony show. In the meantime, it doesn't hurt to pick the brain of people involved in other successful franchises and get a sense of how they run their operation.
  14. Meh, he's probably just as good at it as anyone else, since it's such an overrated job. He's getting an interview from John Mozeliak for a reason. I don't really have a problem with Theo wanting more experience or "his guy", since he'll be working with him on a daily basis. Working relationships are important (which is why Theo will probably show Z the door, no doubt because Theo is racist I guess). Besides, Sandberg brings a lot of unnecesssary baggage with him to Chicago that he wouldn't bring elsewhere. Not a big whoop.
  15. I think it would be extremely beneficial for NFL coaches. You have much more control and security over the information if you put the playbook on iPads. You could better ensure players aren't making copies of the playbook and leaking them to competitors after they've been released. It should also be fairly easy to create an app that animates the X's and O's to simulate the progression of the play, and would be a great teaching tool for visual learners. For playcallers you can pull up the opponent's tendencies in real time on any given down and distance, replace the ubiquitous laminated play card.
  16. Can someone explain to me what a "good manager" does that doesn't involve vague intangibles? I see an adverse reaction to all things small ball, yet overwhelming praise for Joe Madden who utilizes a lot of small ball concepts. In 2010 he was slighly below average in sac bunts, but right up there in Ozzie Guillen territory as far as stolen base attempts.
  17. I just have yet to hear any argument as to how Ryne Sandberg as manager would negatively effect the Cubs winning games. Especially if he's going by organizational guidelines in regards to things like pitcher usage. The arguments I've heard so far is ... He made a comment that he liked to play the game the "right way" (as opposed to?) "Meathead" fans like him, and we're supposed to hate that because our tribe is different/better from their tribe.
  18. This argument in particular doesn't make any sense to me. As a fan, why wouldn't you want a manager who would bring in fan support and revenue streams that would allow your team's owner to field a huge payroll and aquire more premium talent? Oh, because of some deluded and largely self imagined sense of superiority over other fans? It's amazing to me how seemingly grown and rational adults still cling to "jocks vs. geeks vs. nerds vs. stoners" pre-teen junior high school tribalism. What sort of fan support do you really think Ryno is going to bring in? I'm guessing none. What kind of revenue streams can a manager create? I mean Ryno would bank being a spokesmen for products and [expletive], but a fan doesn't buy a ticket because of a manager. http://i.ebayimg.com/t/Vtg-80s-Chicago-Cubs-1989-BOYS-ZIMMER-t-shirt-M-tee-/14/!BuuMut!CWk~$(KGrHqIOKioEvNh,,wdGBMBeTh0zng~~_35.JPG Will a consumer buy a crappy product because of the spokesman or name attatched to the brand? No. But all things equal, it doesn't hurt to have a likeable and popular personality attached to your brand. Advertising execs do it for a reason. I'm curious, if a manager is using Theo's organizational guidelines, how much effect do you think he's going to have on the team one way or another?

  20. Handling the pitchers is the most important job for any manager. Really, I consider the pitching coach more important than the manager if he's the main consultant on pitch counts and usage. Having Garza go on the 60 day DL has way more impact on W/Ls than any in game decision a manager makes. I would love to have Mike Maddux. I really have no problem with Sandberg as long as he's paired with a good pitching coach and is given organizational guidelines and told to follow what the baseball ops and research guys tell him. If it turns out the Cub fans in droves, all the more. Anything that helps Ricketts field a $150 million payroll I'm for.
  21. Maybe I'm reading too much between the lines, but it really seems he went out of his way to mention and praise Francona as much as possible in that article, to give his public support and kinda subtly hint that he wasnt the "unnamed source" in the front office performing the hatchet job on him in the local media.
  22. He's made a lot of really weird micro-managing moves in this series.
  23. I think the Red Sox fans have been speculating/wishing for Farrell.
  24. Didn't Ryno and Grace have a rather chilly relationship, or am I just completely dreaming this up?
  25. If doing so drives the Cub fans out in droves and provides the revenue streams to support a $150 million payroll, I got no problem with it. As long as the front office has strict guidelines in place for the managers.
