  1. Very plausible scenario that Lilly assured the Dodgers front office that Dempster was going to use his 10/5 to assure they were the only real contenders for him, and they pulled their existing offer off the table at the last minute upon learning they were essentially bidding against themselves. They've leveraged a situation where the Cubs pretty much have to trade him to LA. We're not going to an MLB ready guy with any kind of ceiling like Delgado. The question is whether the Cubs go the major league ready low ceiling guy like Gould, or go with a couple of high ceiling A ball types.
  2. Pitch him on 3 days rest, too. AND CUT OFF HIS HEAD And now Dempster wants everyone to know that fans are sending him death threats over internet messageboards. Pray for him.
  3. It's all just blind speculation, but I think Dempster was originally cool with Atlanta when he gave the okay to Theo several weeks ago to, but fell more in love with the idea of going to LA over time. The whole "blindsided" by twitter stuff is unequivical BS, though. Dempster has always seemed to be really concerned about his image to the fans and media about a "good guy". He probably saw first hand the grief Aramis got last year from idiots like Kaplan. He couldn't even bring himself to outright veto the Atlanta trade, he had to be passive aggressive about it.
  4. If you want to punish a guy, let him pitch with this kind of offensive production behind him for the rest of the season before he hits free agency. Maybe there's a few neanderthal GMs out there who still believe in the value of win totals for starting pitchers. Regardless, it can't be too much fun.
  5. But the important thing to remember here is that he's the victim of teh twitterz.
  6. I have no reason to believe it didn't play out exactly the way Wren said it did... The Braves trade didn't "blindside" anyone. Even for people loosely following trade rumors from the outside looking in, they've been speculated as a landing spot for weeks.
  7. I wouldn't be at all shocked if people have sent him all kinds of crazy stuff on Twitter, including death threats. I have no doubt that people say all kinds of crazy stuff on Twitter, but I doubt it's any worse than what he receives after a bad performance. The typical meathead reaction to this kind of stuff is " I like Dempster, he seems like the kinda guy I could have a beer with at the Cubby Bear. Why are we giving away a good Cub pitcher for some no name prospect who won't pan out? " 95% of the Cub fanbase doesn't have the foggiest idea who Randall Delgado is, much less believe he's worthy of sending deaththreats over. This sounds like the kind of hysterics and persecution complex that comes from a player who claims he's been "blindsided" in a trade that has been in the works, and one he's been kept abreast of, for weeks.
  8. Color me skeptical that Dempster is getting death threats.
  9. I don't think that's true at all. With Garza's injury and Dempster's sabotaging of his trade value, I think it's pretty likely.
  10. Dempster is kept in 2012, he isn't going to the bullpen. We're going to need him just to fill out some semblence of a rotation. Unbelievably we're most likely leaving this trading deadline with no notable pitching prospects, much less MLB ready pitching prospects.
  11. Cubs could lock up Garza for 5 years tomorrow and I would be perfectly fine with it. Dempster is definitely going to be a missed opportunity.
  12. It's basically a passive aggressive way of exercising your 10/5 veto.
  13. The best case scenerio out of this is the Cubs just keep Dempster rather than take the Dodgers garbage, and there's enough bad blood between him and the front office out of this that he declines arby out of spiteful pride.
  14. If there is an upside to Eovaldi going in the Hanley deal, would it not be that the Dodger's presently need another starter (when is Lilly due back)? That offers the Cubs a little leverage, although not nearly as much as they once had. The Dodgers are negotiating against themselves. The only offer they have to make is one more attractive to the Cubs than keeping a 36 year old pain in the ass and offering him arby after a career year. They've already said they don't view him as anything more than a cheap rental before the last 48 hours. Every MLB front office exec now knows that Theo can't even seriously negotiate in good faith regarding Dempster. Why would they want to pick up the phone and get involved in this situation only just to have Dempster pull the rug out on a deal at the last moment? It's just a waste of time that diverts their attention away from acquiring other targets. We'll have to eat a Dodger [expletive] sandwich for Dempster, the only remaining question is mustard or mayo.
  15. Anyone who thinks we're going to get anything significant from the Dodgers is dreaming.
  16. Oh, they've moved on have they. Did he make mention of what they've moved on to? If they're willing to part with Delgado, they'll have no shortage of options. A hell of a lot more options than the Cubs have for moving Dempster.
  17. Webster is underwhelming, to say the least. But underwhelming is pretty much what Im expecting now that everyone knows the Dodgers are the only ones that will get a 10/5 sign off. I imagine we'll probably get even less than Webster.
  18. Yeah, but LA has really awesome weather and a BFF in waiting. Screw family.
  19. Obviously no one knows exactly what Dempster previously agreed to. We do know they had an extensive one on one conversation before a game about the time his name started getting strongly linked to teams. I just find it really hard to believe that Dempster didn't give Theo some very real and specific parameters as to what would get him to waive is 10/5. I also find it incredibly hard to believe Theo just blatantly ignored those parameters. The much more likely scenerio is that Dempster just fell in love with the idea of playing in LA recently and is forcing everyone's hand to make it happen.
  20. If Cubs are forced to deal Demp to Dodgers for scraps, they should start him twice more and let him throw 9 innings, save some taxation on the bullpen and deal him at 11:59 on July 31st.
  21. I know he is a reasonable man. But this is all based on speculations (or reports) that he was very much OK with Atlanta as a destination. I'm hoping the reasonable side of him comes through and accepts a trade to Atlanta (a well run team and contender) before it severely hurts the Cubs prospects. The word was he wanted a really good player coming back as part of his legacy. Delgado is exactly that. Someone we can root for, for 5+ years. But listening to his comments this afternoon don't you get the impression he was actively trying to scare Atlanta off? He said he might take all week trying to come to a decision. That would be the best possible thing to say if you didn't want to go to Atlanta. I understand he would rather go to LA more than ATL, but his comments make it seem like if he can't go to LA he doesn't want to go anywhere. Yeah, he's not going to outright veto Atlanta now. He's just going to drag his feet until the Cubs and Atlanta move on.
  22. At his age Dempster would be pretty crazy to turn down the opportunity for one last long term deal coming off a banner year to accept 1 year of arby.
  23. Dempster needs two weeks, and maybe an extended road trip, to contemplate whether he can be away from his family for 9 weeks.
  24. If Dempster is creating a situation where the Dodgers are the only bidders for his services, I don't see why they would give up Eovaldi ... or much of anything, for that matter.
