  1. I wonder what the reaction of Angel fans would be if you told them last November that they would add Albert Pujols, Zach Grienke, and CJ Wilson; plus Mike Trout would have one of the greatest rookie seasons in baseball history, and they would be a .500 team and 8.5 games out of the AL West in the last week of August.
  2. I think they're going to have more than enough PAs for a cheap, versatile righty bat down the road. Michael Young is toast. Beltre is injury prone and will be pretty old in the final years of his contract. Napoli is a free agent who probably won't be a very attractive value if he can't play C any longer. They'll let Nellie Cruz walk after his contract ends in 2013 (he'll be 34). Moreland can be rested against lefties. The Rangers system is stacked in a lot of areas, but they don't have many big power bats. Olt is a valuable commodity for them.
  3. Really wish the Cubs would move their AA affiliate to somewhere close to me. They're going to be a blast to follow in 2014.
  4. As far as I'm concerned, both clubs were playing dirty pool with the Dodgers using Lilly as a liaison to Dempster to get him to use his 10/5 as trade leverage.
  5. Unreal. This is an 19 year old Cubs prospect with a 1.151 OPS. In his first professional season. EDIT: 1.284 OPS. Can we put this into context for a second? Has this kind of crushery been duplicated in the past by someone at a similar age/stage of their career for us? 2004 Dopriak in low A (Lansing) Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk I think Dopriak was 20 years old in his 2nd season.
  6. When do 2015 Cubs season tickets go on sale?
  7. So his OPS basically resembles his caloric intake at any given meal.
  8. I've always wondered why the players association didn't make a push for it. Seems it would give a lot more hitters a lot more opportunities for at bats and some accumulative stats to translate into money on the free agent market. It could also extend some careers.
  9. When I saw some recent footage of him I was struck how broad framed his back and backside is. There's no V shape, just an H shape. Dude is just genetically built like a rectangle. I don't think he's carrying just a ton of bellyfat to be melted off. He could obviously stand to lose a few lbs, but I think what you see is basically what you get. Sometimes God/nature makes natural fullbacks. http://cdn.bleacherreport.net/images_root/slides/photos/002/477/220/1cjyXV.AuSt.36_display_image.jpeg?1344531522
  10. If the Cubs truly wanted to just trade Vitters off, they were pretty stupid to promote him instead of just letting him mash AAA pitching. Particularly given his pattern of initial struggles after a promotion. Seems much more likely to me they're just gauging the likelihood he can fill in at 3B in 2013, at least in a platoon, and where they need to put a temporary 3B bandaid on the priority list going into the offseason.
  11. Vitters hit a 400 foot double. Petco is an awful park to watch baseball in.
  12. Vitters cracks top 5 in PCL for doubles, Top 10 in hits. Not bad for 22.
  13. I've actually been surprised, because the media and fans in Dallas have been calling for Young to be benched. Then again, the Rangers have had a few weeks that make fans anxious and Young has been pretty awful for a 1B/DH playing in that park. I can't imagine Young having much value. Yes, he had a fluke rebound year last year, but he had been trending downwards the two years before. 1B is the only position he can play at a competent level at his age.
  14. If someone has fatal flaw in their swing mechanics, I'm not sure how a call up to face much, much, much pitchers is going to fix it. I know the argument is that the jump to Sveum/Ronsom coaching is the difference. If so the Cubs really need to look for an upgrade over their Iowa hitting coach, if the difference in instruction is that dramatic.
  15. I hope they made the Colvin trade because they highly valued (and ultimately misjudged) Stewart rather than because they just decided they wanted to trade Colvin just because. Otherwise the Colvin trade would be a pretty good example of why that's not a sound philosophy, particularly when it's involving young and cheap palyers. Colvin has value in this league when used in the proper role, and he was cheap. That's ignoring the fact that Colvin was a 26 year old major leaguer, and we had a pretty firm idea what he is and what he isn't. Vitters is 22 years old and is improving his patience by the day. I'm willing to let Vitters hit his ceiling rather than decide it for him. It's not like this organization doesn't have the time to allow it. Yes, we need pitching. We also need someone to play 3B for the next few years until Baez is ready (assuming Baez is moved).
  16. I have a feeling Brett Jackson strikeout rates are going to bring back memories of 2004 Corey Patterson when he sees major league pitchers who can locate breaking pitches in the zone. Vitters, dunno. He might struggle initially but he should have plenty of rope considering he's 22 years old in the majors. Everyone keeps insisting he's getting traded in the offseason, but for the life of me I don't know why. It's not like the Cubs have any other in house alternatives at 3B for the next 2 years. They might as well ride out Vitters until his progress plateaus and he hits a ceiling. To trade him just for the sake of trading him because he's not your particular favorite flavor of icecream is pretty Hendry-esque.
  17. Seriously, the Rangers made off quite well for Dempster.
  18. For Dempster, I always used Seattle trading Jarrod Washburn to Detroit in 2009 as the barometer. Washburn was 35-36 years old in the final year of his contract and having a sterling (lucky) first half of the season. Rentals had a little more value in the previous CBA, but Dempster has been a better pitcher than Washburn the previous 3 years so it kinda balanced out. Seattle got back a low ceiling major league ready starter (Luke French) and a raw high ceiling A ball live arm (Mauricio Robles). I was thinking Theo might prefer just to go with two really high ceiling low level guys instead. I think he just got one high ceiling A guy (although not exceptionally high ceiling) and one guy who's just kinda filler. He didn't get back any immediate or high ceiling pitching help for Dempster. I think Dempster screwed us.
  19. CCP just posted he's been sitting 87-89. Yeah, I'm not really in love with the ceiling of a guy who got demoted down a level from the previous year's.
  20. We just got over excited from a bunch of last minute talk. Before all of last nights dugout man love, many were beginning to accept that we'd probably send Dempster to the Dodgers at their price and maybe a few PTBNL for guys like Johnson and Camp. We got 2 top 100 prospects and have up 2 guys we pulled off the scrap heap, 1 non tender candidate, and 2 months of Dempster. No, we didn't get 2 Top 100 prospects. We got a couple of A guys, and no high level pitching, which quite frankly is less than we probably should have got. I can promise you that Theo was expecting to get more out of Dempster when this whole process started. Dempster pretty much screwed us royally.
  21. If this is the best Theo could get for Dempster after getting the Yankees and Rangers involved, you gotta wonder what kind of garbage the Dodgers were offering.
  22. Have fun pitching in 105 degree heat in a bandbox Demps, and I hope the Dodgers finish 2nd in the West due to crap pitching.
  23. If the Cubs had to file extension for the deal, maybe it's a 3 teamer? Yanks send Mason Williams or Tyler Austin to a 3rd team and Cubs get pitching?
  24. I'm not really worried about moving Soriano today since he'll obviously clear waivers. Focus on Dempster and/or Garza.
