You really think that Soriano's motivation for not going on a rehab assignment in late April was the all star game? And Soriano's miscues in Pittsburgh were two weeks after he got back. As to the leadoff argument, it's relatively simple. The best hitters should hit closest to the top, with some adjustment to make sure they come up with guys on(hence the lack of Lee/Ramirez/Soto to leadoff outcries). Soriano has an .879 OPS and a .287 EqA, Theriot has a .767 OPS and a .273 EqA. These are substantial differences(EqA showing that Soriano is better despite his OBP deficit), and therefore Soriano should be the one to get more at bats if at all possible. Especially in an offense that doesn't need Soriano's slugging in the middle of the order with Lee/Ramirez/Soto/Edmonds/DeRosa there, getting Soriano's production to the top is beneficial over Theriot's slaptastic OBP. There's no way he grasps any of this

He punched it up to 96, 97, 98 a few times, but it was his disgusting changeup that did the most damage. Ive seen him pitch a handful of times, but I apparently didn't pay enough attention, because that is a filthy pitch. Harden sat at 91, 92 for most of the game, but dialed it up when he went up in the zone. I have a feeling that his changeup being so untouchable allows him to not have to bring it 98 every time he throws a fastball. Since he still has the ability to ramp it up to 98 whenever he wants, though, it makes that pitch even more unhittable. A 98mph fastball will begin to look not as impressive after 90 pitches, but when you can run between 91-98 and then toss in an 81mph change that sweeps all the way across the plate, youve got a hell of a repetoire. Seriously, 5 1/3 innings and its easy to tell why this guy is undefeated in his career when his team scores 4 runs in a game. either len or bob mentioned that his fastball had a bigger range of velocities than most pitchers. like watching galllagher last night, almost all of his pitches were in the 92-94 range. i saw some fastballs from harden that were around 90-92, and then a few he dialed up into the 95-98 range. that's unusual. very true I gave most of that fifth round a run through on baseball cube and it's filled with .500 OPS shortstops and 23-year old 5.00 ERA guys in A ball. We gave Samardzija a lot of money, but it doesnt look like it has effected our overall budget and, for a fifth rounder, he's a decent prospect. At this point it looks like, at the very least, we're going to get some decent major league innings from him, how many other 5th round and beyond guys from 2006 can you say that about? Not many, i'd bet. I know it's not exactly a ringing endorsement, but it could be a lot worse.
