  1. Taveras slugging is the same as Wells' ERA.
  2. lol yer an oriole
  3. He never used to be, though. I always wanted the Cubs to trade for him at the deadline. He was one of my favorite non-Cub pitchers for a while. He was great until Dusty starting forcing him to throw 120+ pitches every start. With a lot of pitchers, injuries happen and it's hard to point to an exact "Aha!" point where it all went wrong. But not with Harang. He pitched a regularly scheduled start, came out of the bullpen and threw 4 (I think) innings a couple days later and then made his regularly scheduled start a couple of days later. His ERA before that relief appearance was sub 4.00 and going south every season. After that relief appearance, well, you get the Harang that you have now.
  4. Ok, in this universe you've constructed, where adding a pitch is as easy as saying "i want to learn this pitch" and then waiting through an offseason, wouldn't every pitcher be adding pitches left and right? Wouldn''t Gregg already have one? Do you think he was hanging out in Florida, looking at his stats and thinking, "Gee, I could be so much more productive if I added a cutter. AND THE THING IS, IT'S SO EASY. Nah, I'll have another mai-tai please."
  5. Haha, that's the first place I checked, too.
  6. I just got two texts in a 3 minute span saying he had been DFA'd. Is this legit?
  7. I just hate this concept of Step 1.) google up the game log. Step 2.) 110 pitches! Step 3.) OH [expletive]! There's so much more to it than a cursory, 15-second look at 30 starts in a single season.
  8. Oh come on, IMB. I'm certainly not trying to make an argument that he abused volquez anywhere near the extent that he did Prior/wood. What I was saying was simply that a Volquez threw 110+ (Which has been considered 'a lot' for quite some time now) on 14 occasions in 08 - with four of them coming in consecutive starts in games that meant absolutely nothing, and that probably isn't exactly doing the best job of Volquez' arm. 110 pitches, oh god, sound the alarm. If he'd thrown 10 less, 100 per start, everyone would chalk this up to a small frame guy's arm going out. Which happens all the time and has nothing to do with overuse or Dusty Baker or anything. Pitcher's arms go out. It happens. You have no idea what kind of situations he was in when he was racking up these pitch counts. Was it high-stress? Of course, you don't know, cause all you did was google his name and look at his game log for 10 seconds. Maybe they should have thrown him just 90 pitchers per start, since the Reds weren't in any kind of pennant race last year. Of course, then this year, when the Reds spent half the season in the hunt, Volquez would be hitting the 90 pitch mark and he'd have no major league experience of dealing with higher pitchcounts. And his arm would have probably still busted, and then what?
  9. I think he had a little case of the being Kevin Gregg. He's jut doing what he does, which is being a run-of-the-mill reliever who can't consistently pitch well. It's hard to compare a "normal" year for him considering he spent the last two years in Miami compared to the more homer happy Wrigley. He was pretty unimpressive before he got to south Florida. You know, I didn't even think about how much larger Joe Robbie or whatever it's called now is. Either way, I'd rather drop 4 mil on an average reliever and stick him at closer than bank 10 mil on a "proven closer." I'd rather spend that money on more of an impact position, not that we can really rely on Hendry to do that correctly.
  10. Gregg's given up 10 HR this year... tied for his career worst. All his other numbers are in line, so he's probably just been a little unlucky. Now, the pitches the last couple of days were meatballs, but it seems pretty likely to me that he's just had a little case of bad luck.
  11. yeah, sweet, good idea guys, who is the better 9th inning option, then? all these "HE LAYS IT UP ON A TEE" complaints are so stupid. It's not like the 9th inning causes him to serve up fat ones every once in a while. HE'S GOING TO DO THAT OCCASIONALLY NO MATTER WHAT INNING HE PITCHES. Jesus, have some common sense. If we had a bad-ass, big-money closer, I'd love to demote Gregg. As it is, he's probably our best option, so deal with it.
  12. That's not at all how we viewed eckstein. pretty sure that anyone with half a brain would have loved for eckstein to be a cardinal for life
  13. Do you even follow baseball? Go look at their stats and their contracts and try and type this sentence again with a straight face. Gregg has an ERA under 4 and he kicked ass in June and July. Suddenly he has two bad games and all this kneejerk [expletive] comes out. People like you are an embarrassment to our fan base. Try and stay level for at least one day, please.
  14. this isnt a serious question is it? not really, i mean i know he's not owed anything. but he's only making the minimum, so you think one of the 8 figure guys or the organization could throw him a little extra. I give Hill credit and respect him for being out there every single day, but his production is barely worthy of the league minimum salary and I'm sure he is happy to be making that. so your saying that a player making league minimum should be given compensation for getting playing time? Ryan Theriots making near minumum. Randy Wells too. jesus christ
  15. Well, he certainly hasnt been AS bad as he was with Prior/Wood.... Out of Volquez' 9 starts this year, he threw 100+ pitches 5 times (107,104,106,110,108). Last year out of his 33 starts, 22 of them he threw 100+ pitches, topping out at 121 on Sept 13 @ Arizona. He also had FOURTEEN starts last year in which he went 110 or more pitches, including ALL BUT ONE of his starts in september (117, 119, 121, 111, 98) ...but he definitely hasn't tried to protect Volquez' arm. Volquez is a good pitcher when healthy- so he went deep into a lot of games last year. I've looked at Dusty's work in Cincy and using stuff like PAP over at baseballprospectus he is- like you said- not like he was with the Cubs. I'm not saying he's innocent, mind you- I just don't see the level of evidence someone can build against him with other teams. With the Reds he doesn't appear to have run them in the ground. Maybe not, but I still think you can make an argument about Volquez' September 08. 110+ pitches in four consecutive starts? since when is 110 pitches a lot? quit pretending like you can make any kind of judgment based on just 4 pitchcounts
  16. ok, ill take that. what will i win?
  17. Jeez, the last 10 pages here were really embarrassing, you guys should be ashamed.
  18. Did you see that ass slap? You can tell milton loves his teammates.
  19. People bitching about scoreboard-watching also qualifies as both of those things Both of you knock it off. we're not fighting, and if he wants to keep us updated on the cardinals game, that would be fine with everyone, i think. I just can't stand hearing "CARPENTER GOT A HIT ONLY THE CARDINALS PIXIE DUST" every time someone does something. It's awful and embarrassing.
  20. Andy, shut up with this cardinals [expletive], it's pathetic and annoying
