  1. just outta curiosity, where did you read this? i didn't know he had the ability to hit 99 to begin with. if that's true, this is outstanding. I wouldn't be surprised if the "mph" were a misprint and the story really just related that he is throwing between 96-99 pitches in warming up before each inning of his simulated games against Jose Macias and Augie "Boom-Boom" Ojeda.
  2. With the recent reluctance by major league organizations to appease professionals who repeatedly act like pains in the ass, Cabrera may be available in fairly short order. I see the "No Facial Hair" rule as an assertion of power first, and the interest in having neatly trimmed players second. I think its a smart move by Girardi in light of the team's makeup. I hope the best for Joe. Not the Marlins...just Joe.
  3. Maybe they think it has more to do with Star Wars then baseball. Which would be fine, too. Star Wars Old School, anyway...
  4. Thanks for the compilation, Philly. Nice to see you around a little more.
  5. Team names in Japan generally make reference to the corporation that owns them. In this case, the Fighters are owned by Nippon Ham. Good thing that DOESN'T apply to MLB cause there would be some off-the-wall names. Names like the New York Fighting Steinbrenners, or the Atlanta AOL Time Warner Braves, etc, etc. Chicago Tribunes! I think Tribune Newsies is closer to that Japanese feel.
  6. I couldn't agree more. I don't understand why such basic principles of interpretation are ignored (or, at least, are accidentally forgotten) on this board from time to time.
  7. What a bunch of utter nonsense, CubsWin. I can think of few posts lacking less foundation or merit.
  8. Sheehan is obviously just swayed by unreasonable NSBB groupthink.
  9. Does anyone have a list, or, rather, has it already been addressed in another thread? Thanks in advance for any help.
  10. Or, perhaps, he just really dislikes their approach to the offseason. Being critical of the Cubs for two, three, even four days in arow doesn't necessarily mean that one has an unreasonable bias against a team. Rather, it could just as easily mean that he has a diehard loyalty that makes the decisions made this offseason difficult to swallow.
  11. I don't care for the Ruben. Sandwich or veteran professional hitter...
  12. This thread feels disjointed.
  13. I'm not about to mitigate anyone's responsibility with respect to this situation. Baker brought him in games and chose to pitch him back to back on occassions, Rothschild never protected his pitcher, Hendry signed off, and MacPhail, at least, gave tacit approval through his constent support of his GM in the face of complete and utter stupidity. To hell with all of them. Baker is going to use him if he's available. It wasn't his responsibility to shut down Wood. That falls on management and Rothschild, especially since it was such a no-brainer. There's plenty of things to blame Dusty for, but I don't think this is one of them. Sure he misused him, but only because other people allowed that to happen. Jon...he is the manager. Baker is ultimately responsible for the usage of every man on his roster.
  14. Without question, which contributes to my ire.
  15. The Redskins were living on borrowed time anyway. They haven't moved the ball much at all in recent weeks. I never considered them a real threat to come out of the NFC.
  16. That is a lot of freaking space to waste.
  17. That's exactly what he said. Dusty said that Wood proved that he can pitch out of the Bullpen and if he HAD to work out of the bullpen, he could. It was a hypothetical, "what if" question. Baker never said Wood will come out of the pen. so this is another NSBB overreaction? Good to hear that though I will continue to expect the worst. Frankly, Poudre, I don't think it really matters. At this point, we know that Wood getting back to the starting rotation as soon as possible was jeopardized by his usage last season. Even if he manages to start opening day, it doesn't absolve these people from their failings with respect to his handling. Therefore, I don't view anything anyone has to say in criticism of these people on this topic as overreaction.
  18. I'm not about to mitigate anyone's responsibility with respect to this situation. To hell with all of them.
  19. The Kerry Wood situation defies logic, and it has since August. It is a collection of decisions that were objectively improper on their face. This situation is so absurd that I have little doubt that the more intelligently run organizations in MLB are sitting back in astonishment at how stupidly (yes, stupidly) Hendry, MacPhail, Rothschild and Baker handled their multimillion dollar starter. The handling of Kerry was so bad that there is no redemption possible. There is no move possible that can erase the decisions made regarding Kerry's injury. These people are incompetent. I'm sorry if some of you think that is harsh, but there is no reasonable defense to this debacle.
  20. Or, they realized Kerry's rehab was going badly, and it was the Cubs that pulled Prior out of the equation, thus killing a potential deal. If memory serves, the last few days of trade talk focused more on non-Prior deals. We know that Hendry, Baker, et al. said Kerry would be ready for the season regardless of if the surgery was sooner or later sometime around last August. Recently, the Cubs have hedged on those reports, as has been discussed on this board. We also know that the organization doesn't have a great track record of properly diagnosing/treating injuries this century.
  21. http://chicago.cubs.mlb.com/images/2006/01/10/wS72X42T.jpg Maybe Hendry signed One Dog from White Sox lore. I mean, the jersey reads "ONES" and there are a couple of ones adorning it...
  22. I think we should be careful to avoid misinterpreting renewed annoyance as surprise. If its the topic du jour in the media, its going to be discussed here with many of the feelings previously expressed rehashed. I will say that it doesn't surprise me that the Trib brainstrust is enamored with MacPhail and Hendry. Its a great example why professional sports team ought not be corporately owned.
  23. Jim indicaated that 79 wins was unacceptable. Finally, we can agree on something. Are these comments surfacing from the caravan stops? If so, the convention should be a hoot.
